AZL Angels Rally to Edge AZL Cubs at Sloan Park

Jahmal Jones crushed a three-run HR and Chad Hinshaw drilled an RBI double and a single, reached base on an HBP, and scored a run, as the AZL Angels rallied for a run in the 7th and a run in the 8th to edge the AZL Cubs 5-4 in Arizona League action last night at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Jose Paniagua belted an RBI double and a single and scored two runs and Michael Foster (Cubs 2015 16th round draft pick - Northeastern U.) singled twice and reached base on an HBP for the Cubs in a losing cause. Foster also turned-in the defensive play of the game, a diving catch in short right-field in the top of the 4th inning.

2B Angelo Amendolare (Cubs 2015 27th round draft pick - Jacksonville U.) has been sent to the AZL Cubs from AAA Iowa, where he provided some bench depth for the I-Cubs for the past couple of weeks after four Iowa position players (Andreoli, Chambers, Dent, and Valaika) found their way to the DL within a seven-day period in early July. Amendolare is a mature, polished college senior with experience in the Cape Cod League who was one of the Top 50 hitters in NCAA D-1 in 2015. He went 0-4 in his AZL Cub debut Monday night.

Who the hell is Jesse Rogers? If Jacob Rogers is new to you, you must not read Midwest League box scores. Nice lefty-hitting slugging first baseman. Sixteen homers at Kane County last year, eleven this year at MB. .381 OBP in the minors. Rising slowly in the minors because he's just what the Cubs don't need. Just noticed something interesting about him: drafted by the Cubs out of junior college in 2010, because he went to Dunedin H.S., Hendry's alma mater. Then drafted in 2012 by the Cubs, because they liked him. I had a favorable impression of him when I saw a Myrtle Beach game (in Virginia) earlier this summer. If Justin Bour can make the majors, so can Rogers.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
