It Might Be, It Could Be, It Is...A Deadline to Bid on the Cubs

Crain's Chicago Business reports Tuesday that prospective purchasers of the Chicago National League Ballclub have been given a deadline of July 18th to submit their initial bids.

Crain's says 10 parties are currently in the running; those ten received the team's financial books last month. The paper's source expects the field to be culled down to four or five finalists following this first round of bids, with the winning bidder being "identified at or near the end of the baseball season (and) a deal closing by year end or very early next year."

Tribune Company has announced it plans to retain 5% ownership of the team, which should be more than enough to ensure that Sam Zell will be able to get a decent seat and a cold Old Style whenever he damn well pleases.

Even retaining the 5%, I expect the sale to just crack $1 bn (Assuming Wrigley is part of the deal... I never heard the full scoop on that.)

According to WSCR yesterday a couple of bidders dropped out due to current economy and taking a look a the Cubs "books".

"You owe Soriano *how* much in 2011?"

So how much is TCR bidding?

I'll pitch in a buck.

I'll contribute rally caps and a rather gay poster named Chad.

In reply to by Mister Whipple

Change that to a 'gay poster of Chad' and we might be on to something.

Think Zell's got some interest in something like that?

it surely can't be an injury, soreness, a personal issue, a blister, a hand/wrist/shoulder joint issue, partying too late, or anything else. baseball players aren't individuals or distinctly human. everyone knows that. i mean hell...i think lou's using marmol too much (though in that article lou gets a "its all good" rather than "goddamn you dusty!!!") but that article is another instance of someone assuming something, presenting it as fact, and giving a few hundred words and a few hours of work credentials to show a point that ignores all other factors which may be influencing the issue at hand. the research is one thing...the presentation of it and assumptions/leaps taken are absolutely full of it, though.

I see on the "RSS Info" page that there are a few ways to subscribe to TCR through your phone. Has anyone tried these services? Suggestions?

cubs/harden? anyone else heard? backup?

Got that from another site that cited the score.

wgn 720 running with the story. sweet. well...i'll wait to find out who for who. been nice knowing ya matt murton, btw.

espn levin, confirms. 5 people going to oak. he thinks nothing spectacular, but solid names.

the names yet...Murton, Patterson yes. Have not heard Gallagher. He's still talking... Whoops... Gallagher, too. Ugh... Marshall, Gallagher, Patterson, Murton. We get Harden and another player - haven't heard it...

Wow. Great to see Hendry move so quickly, but I hope Harden can stay healthy. Hopefully we didn't give up both Marshall and Gallagher.\ ESPN says Gaudin also to the Cubs and Donaldson to the A's.

Gallagher, Patterson, Murton, Donaldson for Harden, Gaudin -edit- Love it.

Thanks. Imo, Gallagher is the only one that bothers me. We just do not have MLB rotation starters a year or less away in the minors. I am not bullish on Rich Hill. Wish it was him.

[ ]

In reply to by The E-Man

I agree it's too bad Gallagher has to go, but he's the key player in the deal for Beane. He could be another Nolasco, or better, but there's no doubt that a healthy Harden is better this year. I think Rich Hill can get it back, and there's no way Beane's going to take Hill after the year he's had. Might as well try to get Hill back together mentally and mechanically rather than sell low.

We got some guys in AA like Mitch Atkins and James Russell who should be ready in 2010, if not the ASB next year. Also Guzman and Shark will likely be forced into swing roles next year (guzman no options left and Shark because the organization will want him on the 09 roster due to the money he is making). Also Gaudin is capable of being a 4th starter.

espn saying marshall not in the deal

i like this trade. hate to see gallagher go, but wow...we get a year and 1/2 of harden as long as his arm is in 1 piece and a new reliever who can pull long-relief and spot start that can keep the ball in the park (even if he is hittable...he's as good as his D behind him).

Just looked at Chad Gaudin's stats. Can anyone pull a scouting report? Is he a setup guy, or spot starter?

Can't believe we got Gaudin too. Solid depth. Thoughts on what roster moves will be made?

Gaudin goes to pen. harden will start fri. or sat. looks like gaudin was a starter mostly last year, 199 innings...

In reply to by The E-Man

Gaudin is gonna get lost in the hubbub I think but he should not be overlooked. He's an outstanding piece of this deal. Gaudin immediately comes in with the fifth best WHIP on the team: 1) Marmol 0.90 2) Wood 0.96 3) Harden 1.14 4) Dempster 1.18 5) Gaudin 1.28 I wonder how long he stays in the pen. He looks like he would be a serious upgrade at #5. Hendry really put everything into this deal. I think Gaudin has less potential upside than Gallagher, but he's ready to help us now.

In reply to by Mister Whipple

if gaudin can/could throw less pitches he would be a stater prospect...heck, he'd probably be a #5 starter on more than just a few teams out there as-is. i hope he can keep his stuff on the ground...he throws "ordinary" enough to get hit...

i'm truly happy for him. seems like a terrific person, and will surely be welcomed there.

[ ]

In reply to by The E-Man

Me too. If I were to pick a good fit team for him it would be the A's.

[ ]

In reply to by Mister Whipple

i hope he gets a chance to start for someone for 500+abs. if nothing else cubs fans wanna know what we had. the big question on his hitting was always...is he a 15hr guy or a 30hr guy? for the cubs...sigh, ya know. with the corner OF locked up for 3+ years murton was pretty much "doomed" to 300-400abs a year at most on the team as constructed.

Harden takes Gallagher's spot. Gaudin takes Lieber's spot? Or Marshall is sent down. An outfielder will need to be brought up, presumably Hoffpauir.

money wise it's a great deal considering Sabathia would leave for FA and Harden will be a Cub next year as well. Harden makes $4.5 million this season and has a $7 million club option for next season with no buyout and escalators based on IP. Gaudin $1.75 million this season in his first year of arb eligibility.

"Scouting Report" Assets A fearless, aggressive righty, he displays a good slider and moving fastball that sits around 90 m.p.h. Is capable of getting out of jams. Flaws Walks are his biggest drawback, and his lack of command are evident against left-handed hitters. Surprisingly, he's ineffective with nobody on base. Career potential A decent mid-rotation starter. www.sportsnet.ca

let's move the Harden discussion up there... Game thread up as well.

ESPN needs to fire an editor. "He's scheduled to $4.75 million this season." "The Cubs pay three games against the Cincinnati Reds starting Tuesday night before hosting the San Francisco Giants." "Jim's been trying to improve our team, and he's been tralking to a few clubs about our pitching" That's impressive for an article that has already been updated several times. I'm sure they will fix it at some point, but sheesh. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3478902

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.
