With just one nightmarish half-inning having prevented them from a sweep of the Cardinals this past weekend, the Cubs return to the 33-10 Confines for three games against the Reds, who just completed a four-game sweep of the Nationals, which is very similar to winning four games from an actual Major League Baseball team.

Ryan Dempster puts his perfect record at Wrigley this season (9-0) up against Aaron Harang, who the Cubs have already thumped twice this year. (For that matter, Dempster had one of his lesser home starts of the season against the Reds back on April 15th, allowing five walks, five hits and four runs in a game the Cubs won anyhow, 9-5.)

In all, the Cubs and Reds have split six games this game, with each club taking two of three on its home field.

Dusty Baker Quote of the Day:
Speaking of journeyman and former Cub Jerry Hairston, Jr., who has hit in the leadoff spot for 10 of the past 11 Reds games while alternately playing shortstop and centerfield, Baker said:

"We wouldn't be where we are (without him)."

To be clear, the 43-47 Reds are in fourth place, 10 1/2 games behind the first-place Cubs and just two games ahead of the last-place Astros, and the team has been higher than fourth place for only seven days this entire season.

Go get 'em, Jerry.

btw...jerry hairston's been playing some killer ball. he had persistant back problems for years in his career he thought was untreatable. when he finally got so sore/limited he got time to "rest" properly he got better. also during that time he found a better way to keep his back in shape. it wouldnt be too hard to see brian roberts-like production out of him for a few years...though he probably wont steal 50 bases or anything like that...or get hyped up on HGH to do it ;p

Wasn't Hairston already linked to HGH? I might be making that up, but FWIW I saw him out in Scottsdale a couple years ago with Barry Lamar Bonds. They've never played on the same team, so I don't know how they'd know each other well enough to be hitting the clubs together unless they somehow know each other through their fathers (also never played together, although they came very close with the White Sox in '78). Anyway, hanging out with one of the biggest douchebags in baseball history is enough evidence for me to suspect you've been doing something unseemly.

To be fair to Dusty, I think the Reds are 9 games over .500 when Hairston is playing. Obviously he doesn't deserve all of the credit for that stat, but that won't stop Dusty from pimping one of his dawgs.

Looks like he might the cliche veteran pitcher in spring not really ramping it up and just “forking on stuff” in spring. If he gets to 94 on the regular he’ll do just fine.

topped out a 94mph, threw 4 of those.  feeling a lot better about neris.

  • crunch (view)

neris has thrown 2 pitches at 93mph out of his first 5 pitches.  that's a positive turn.

I really am not interested in the wesneski head case experience again any time soon. Give me smyly over wesneski. Hell give me keegan Thompson over wesneski every day of the week. His stuff isn’t as good but at least he doesn’t melt down mentally every time something goes mildly awry.

they might not want to start the clock on brown and give us wesn.  hopefully it won't come to that.

    madrigal ground rule double!

he blows a play and hits a double.  we're getting bizarro madrigal.

Close up video shows Steele saying to the Trainer "no it just cramped up"

    Hope so

Ben Brown and not Smyly please

  • crunch (view)

    agreed and agreed.

he walked off on his own, but we may not find out for a few days how this will impact the club.

Looked like a hamstring rather than a knee, not sure if that’s better or worse.

  • crunch (view)

steele leaves the game with a hamstring or knee injury.  sigh.
