Game 160 Thread / Cubs @ Reds (1 of 3)

Game Chat : BR Preview : Game Notes Carlos Zambrano vs. Bronson Arroyo Lineups:
Soriano LF Hopper CF
Kendall C Keppinger SS
Lee 1B Votto 1B
Floyd RF Phillips 2B
Ramirez 3B Encarnacion 3B
DeRosa 2B Valentin C
Jones CF Coats LF
Theriot SS Ellison RF
Zambrano P Arroyo P
The hopes of all Cubdom rest on the broad shoulders of Zambrano, who has pitched well in three of his last four starts. The clinker in that bunch, unfortunately, was a 5-2 loss to the Reds, who have already beaten Carlos four times this season. Zambrano's strikeout numbers are down significantly in '07; he's had particular trouble missing Cincinnati bats (just 11 K in 28 2/3 IP). Importantly, though, Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey, and Josh Hamilton--combined 1.112 OPS against Zambrano this year--are all sitting this one out with injuries. Arroyo, meanwhile, was the Reds starter Monday before last, when the Cubs stormed back against the Cincy bullpen to win 7-6. The curveball-throwin', guitar-strummin' Arroyo is 0-2 with 2 ND's against the Cubs this year, but he has fanned 29 while walking just 10 in 33 2/3 IP. Given the events of the past three days, Zambrano's inconsistency, Arroyo's occasional success against the Cubs, and the dispiriting facts of Chicago Cub history, I think this game shapes up like yet another, tense tug of war. On the other hand, the Reds are severely depleted and have lost five games in a row. And oh, yeah--we do have one of our aces going tonight. In Milwaukee. We're all pulling for you, Greg.

I predict Kendall will get hit by a pitch...and they'll find out the pitcher was ordered to do it by Ned Yost

Kendall 3/12 vs Arroyo 250/308/250 fwiw Guess he wants contact in the 2 spot although generally Kendall does well at getting on-base.

James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States. Tonight, I'll be claiming my fifth RBI in a Cubs uni. Sick. Fives are wild tonight. My boy Kendall is going to allow five stolen bases too. Sick. Theriot's gonna come through. He's scrappy.

now this an impressive record... Ryan Howard surpassed Dunn for most K's in a season and almost 20 less games.

lost in the "humor" of craig monroe is the somewhat sad fact that he is the RH 3-position OF'r. pie never filled the role of a 3-position OF'r, though his arm would probably let him and he's an excessive lefty given team strength anyway. yeah, he's probably playoff bound outta necessity of tools.

Ryan Howard: .265 / .391 / .571 44 HR 130 RBI's 517 AB's - 106 BB's - 197 K's Adam Dunn: .264 / .386 / .554 40 HR 106 RBI's 522 AB's - 101 BB's - 165 K's

interesting numbers, wtf are they? Dunn set the record last year in a 160 games and 683 PA's Howard set the record this year in 141 games (so far) and 635 PA's.

Oh, lordy, that Arroyo music. I knew it was out there, but never forced myself to listen before. Good god. If only he pitched as crappy as that. Seriously, Cubs, please, for the love of God and on behalf of music lovers everywhere, hit this guy hard tonight.

I'm supremely confident we will wrap this up today or tomorrow. But, the pressure is the same as the last two days, and a win today is very important. With Harang going tomorrow, we do not want to be only 1 game ahead. Let's win today, and count on the Brewers losing 1 of the next 2 and we'll have it wrapped.

Seth McClung got his suspension wiped out, how'd that happen? Did he sell out Ned Yost or something?

Crunch, JJ should have been pinch hit for yesterday. Pie could have filled in defensively. We needed plate discipline up there against an erratic Pinto. We needed that run. It's really sad how Pie's become invisible to Piniella. I was thinking today about how horrible the bunting has become at the major league level. The epidemic has spread to every team. Imagine if Corey Patterson had actually been a good bunter. Or if Pie was good with it today.

I'm pitching for Cincy tonight. Weird. I'm supposed to be the first guy out of the bullpen. I don't quite understand it, but hey! I'm in!

Well, bunting really helps guys like Pierre who hit a lot of groundballs anyway, because it pulls the corner infielders in. Pie and Patterson strike out a lot, so it the first basemen and third basemen can sit in the dugout when they're batting.

yeah, got that they were this year's numbers, didn't understand what you were going for with Dunn's numbers from this season. Whatever...moving on. You can just go by Mike from your blog fwiw - badnewscubs.wordpress.com/

stalker

I was thinking today, that if the Cubs win, and then Maddux beats the Brewers, the answer to the trivia question 'who was the winning pitcher when the Cubs clinched the division in 2007' would be Greg Maddux.

Bunting was once a legitimate weapon in baseball, when used correctly. It's a shame few of the speedsters are skilled with it anymore. Rob, I wasn't making a point with the Howard/Dunn numbers. They're just interesting. Very similar outside of RBI's and K's.

top 3 batters in lineup for houston. .334 .333 .333 Think they have some kinda bet on who ends the season with the highest average?

according to MLB.tv, every position player on the Reds 40-man roster is with the team. Seems a bit excessive.

Just saw a Ward interview on Cubs pregame... Says his thumb does hurt, but he is available to PH tonight. Said he was available to the best of his understanding, which was contradictory to a report Rob posted earlier.

"Seems a bit excessive." eh, why not for the last weekend of the season?

just regurgitated a Sun-Times blurb The Cubs could be without their top pinch hitter for the final regular-season series, depending on how quickly Daryle Ward recovers from a sprain near the base of his left thumb. Ward, who suffered the injury sliding into second base after legging out a double Wednesday night, wore a splint and heavy wrap Thursday that went halfway up his forearm. The usually affable Ward didn't want to talk about the injury. He's batting .330, including 11-for-40 (.275) as a pinch hitter. guess it healed quickly....

Actually Chad, I acted like a human yesterday. But, if my site need be plugged so be it. I'll thank Rob. Fans can find excellent Cubs content here: http://badnewscubs.wordpress.com (If that doesn't show up, the link is above.) The site viewership is indeed growing. I just wanted to stop by for old times, 2004 was a special year... In Dusty We Trusty!!! That was the year we learned the importance of the leadoff man... and that you never force a setup man to close if he isn't made for it. This is the year we learned defense at catcher, and its grave importance. Damn, it was fun going as Craig Mac for a bit... for those who remember the rapper. It's also nice to see Arizona Phil going strong... the greatest presence in the Cubs blogging world.

Chad, (laughing)... I'm in the family also... and have never pronounced the excessive 'oy' sound. When I say it, it phonetically sounds like 'uy'. But, I appreciate the tip.

"guess it healed quickly…." Do we know he is available?

Is that a trick question? For what it's worth, I too am part of the family/tribe/religion/culture.

Reds announcers talking about Carlos Zambrano looking like his pitches are slower and his arm angle lower than earlier this year. But as we all remember, that was his problem in the spring.

Need a lot of runs tonight. For gosh sakes' make Arroyo throw a lot of pitches and make him work. Let's grind out some ABs.

I can't believe I pay for the privilege of watching ads for 'The FInal Season' every 10 minutes.

Jones's ball to left answers a question from earlier in the season: yes, Coats plays the wall like a converted infielder.

In other news, Bruce Froemming can still bite me. Runner at 1st, 1 down, grounder to third, nice throw gets the runner by a half-step, but the ump who should have retired a long time ago called him safe - so 1st and 2nd, 1 down, instead of runner at 2nd, 2 down.

Whoo!

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

  • Eric S (view)

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.
