Rumor be via rotoworld that Yanks have already decided they'll pick up Abreau's $16 mil option

I think that's a 3/44 on Rotoworld. I have to agree with cruch, I just don't see what good Schilling would be on the 2008 Cubs.

Schilling will likely want a 2 year deal, $20+ million deal and with him being 41 by Opening Day next year, I think I would pass. Anyway, if he does leave BOST, I think it will be very difficult to get him away from PHIL. If it is true about Abreu, Hendry is really going to have to work some magic on the trade front if he wants to really upgrade the team.

Schilling is in the deep twilight of his career. Jimmy Hendy: Please don't even think about it.

I know Rob has been promoting Schilling as a Cub option for '08 and I think he has a good point. Two reservations: 1. His price just went up. 2. He seems like such a jerk.

I have to agree with cruch, I just don’t see what good Schilling would be on the 2008 Cubs. Was that a joke or did you change your mind?

Yeah, not sure if I'd classify him as jerk or just a blowhard, but either way everyone should just avoid his press conferences. Neal pointed out earlier that Schilling was likely looking for a one year deal, we'll see where it ends up. If someone has a better idea on upgrading our starting staff, I'd love to hear it.

Yeah that was sarcasm, Rob G. I said that Schilling was looking for a one year deal, because he wants to make his MMORPG and he's old, then a couple days later Schilling said he was probably just in the one year deal era of his career, I think in the article that had speculation he was going to Philly. I can't find the link. Speculation is anywhere from $10 to $15 million for Schilling, the $10 would undoubtedly have some GS, Innings, and post season success bonuses in it. "Schilling made $13 million this year, but money doesn't figure to be his primary motivation at this point of his career. He said that he's only interested in looking at teams with a chance to win the World Series." It costs about $10 million to make an MMORPG these days, he's probably got that squirrled away by now. Not sure if they intend to self publish, but I would guess so.

Forgot to mention that Rob already clearly layed out the appeal of Schilling coming to the Cubs. The chance of him being known as 'the Cursebreaker' is going to be pretty tempting for that giant ego of his. The phillies have a pretty long world seriesless streak going too, though, don't they? I haven't ever heard of him being a clubhouse problem, so he seems to keep that ego in check among his teammates, unlike a guy like Sammy.

not that long....1983 for the Phils and they won in 1980. I think if he hits the FA market, the Cubs should definitely be seriously interested. But I don't see why the Red Sox would let him go to be honest. Beckett, Dice-K, Wakefield, Buchholz, Lester as their staff? I'd think I'd keep Schilling around with those options.

Rob G.: "If someone has a better idea on upgrading our starting staff, I’d love to hear it." Everything is based off unknown assumptions. Will he even come here? How much would it cost? How many years does he want? How much is the Cubs payroll next year. They have like $100 million already on the books next year with only 13 players signed. How much more can they add? Could they take on $13 million more for only one player? But to answer your question and going along with the unknown assumptions, how about upgrading the rotation by trading for Santana?

"not that long….1983 for the Phils and they won in 1980." 1993 you mean. Just a typo, i"m sure.

of course they were in it in 83 and lost to the Orioles. So perhaps you just forgot about Mitch Williams and Joe Carter. HOW DARE YOU!!!!! The ex-cub factor was off the charts that day.

yes we should trade for Johan, but when that doesn't happen we should TRY and acquire Schilling through free agency, which is actually remotely possible. Compared to trading for Johan which right up there in odds with any of us winning the lottery.

If the Cubs can't afford Schilling, how come they can afford Santanna (who isn't rumored to be available anyway)? In either case they would probably have to dump Jaques and/or Marquis to free up some payroll.

aw crap, it wasn't.... To my defense, those were the years the Blue Jays won and they don't really count.

""those were the years the Blue Jays won and they don’t really count." Now that sounds like something I would say.

I'm just kidding around, the Skydome was actually rocking back then. Didn't they pass 4 million or something a couple of years? But honestly, that was when I was living it up at Marquette and while still interested in baseball, not nearly to the levels before and after college. I barely watched much baseball those four years, the Cubs being rather awful contributing to that.

well geez, I'd take Hill over Bucholz (at least for next year) so it's really 2-2-1 and if we get Schilling than we're even better. Go Internets!

The Real Neal: If the Cubs can’t afford Schilling, how come they can afford Santanna (who isn’t rumored to be available anyway)?" Very true!!! But Schilling isn't available right now either. That is why without knowing how much the Cubs can spend and/or who is really available it is tough to talk about who the Cubs should get. "In either case they would probably have to dump Jaques and/or Marquis to free up some payroll." If they dump JJ or Marquis, they will have to eat a good chunk of those deals, so it won't be as much of salary savings as one would think.

The Cubs were competitive in '93 and '95 and worth watching two out of five days in '92. 'Morgan and Maddux, then don't ask us'. Man, that '92 offense was horrific. I always wondered if we would have been much better had we not traded for Sosa.

Rob G.: "if we get Schilling than we’re even better." And if we trade for Santana, we would be the best in baseball...:)

what to do with marshall... even discounting the schilling thing (taking it off the table for the hell of it) the rotation is lefty-heavy with marshall being the 3rd lefty bringing up the rear. guzman's out of the picture...hart is making things "interesting". the rotation has 4 guys locked in pretty much 100% for the next 2 seasons. is guy #5 gonna be the 3rd lefty, and if not, what do you do with him? blah blah package and trade for renteria blah blah whatever...100 trade scenarios we could dream up. still...where is this team gonna spend its money? what is its money? where's the upgrade gonna come? what in the hell are they targeting for upgrade anyway? what the hell is gonna happen to the OF situation?

JJ/Marshall for Renteria Sign Schilling Dempster for Crisp Resign Kerry and Prior and Ward That leaves an OF spot unless they go with Murton which I'm fine with but it does sound like they want a lefty with some pop. No idea who's really available on that end.

JJ for center field in Turner field? That's a lot of free passes on the base paths.

"The Cubs were competitive in ‘93 and ‘95 and worth watching two out of five days in ‘92. ‘Morgan and Maddux, then don’t ask us’. Man, that ‘92 offense was horrific. I always wondered if we would have been much better had we not traded for Sosa." The shame wasn't trading for Sosa. The shame was letting Maddux walk. If Maddux heads up that team in 93, they had a pretty decent squad.

just know Braves are looking for a cf'er and if they're not going to pay Andruw, they're not going to pay Torii or Rowand. Just letting my dream of dumping JJ get in the way....

At what point does dumping become a good fit? if they are not going to pay top dollar for a CF, the JJ is a very good option for them.

of course if they're smart, they'd just trade for Crisp and there's a good chance Baldelli will be available once again this offseason, likely at a more reasonable price.

"The shame wasn’t trading for Sosa. " So the '92 Cubs were better off with Sosa than they would have been with Bell? I have to respectively disagree. George Bell had 112 RBI's and Sammy only had 25. Chadworld is tinkering on the edge of oblivion! OK, maybe not so respectively.

something has to be done with pie...while the PCL #s were WAY WAY WAY outta whack this season (esp. iowa cubs, seriously...they got a dehumidifier or something there)...pie's pretty much ready for some kind of role. he looks overmatched in the bigs, but where's the ballance of what to do with his career at this point?

They should trade for Crisp and then trade for Andy Marte to make the cycle complete. I once had an argument with the BP prospect guy about who was a better prospect, Marte or McPherson, boy were we stupid (but looking at their stats, I guess I was right).

fuld 2:2 (2 walks, single, double) vs. team china... kid's got enough scrap parts to build a baseball player it seems. hehe...

FYI, A's and Rsox set to start next season in Japan. We know Billy Beane is always in a trading mood, they have an OF'er they could spare? I would guess Travis Buck or Kotsay might be available. I would guess Swisher is part of their long term plans since he got an extension last year. And I really doubt Buck is available either. Looking at ESPN.com and RF'ers with at least 100 AB's last year, I'd take Murton over anyone who might be available, unless the Dodgers really are dumb enough to trade Matt Kemp.

McPherson. I was really arguing against the tendency of the 'experts' to rank the guys in the low minors higher than the guys in the high minors. I think Marte was coming off a huge year in high A, and McPherson was coming off a huge year in AAA at the time.

yeah I would have probably taken McPherson but I got a bit of Angels bias. I wonder if his back issuers are ever going to heal?

It's probably a good idea to be leery of hitters on teams that use the California-Texas-PCL chain of development, though. Who's the last hitter the Angels developed, Anderson?

i don't know why that happened but i was trying to use a 'less than' sign. so 92 team with bell (less than) 93 team with Maddux and Sosa

Since the Cubs love "wily vets" *and* pitchers who spend half the year on the DL, Schill would fit right in. *blah blah package and trade for renteria blah blah whatever…100 trade scenarios we could dream up.* It would be easier for the Cubs to retaliate on Renteria for his bush-league crap from last season if he were in the clubhouse away from prying eyes and witnesses, so yeah, go get him.

Schilling's IP since 2001: 256.2 259.1 168.0 226.2 93.1 204.0 151.0 so half would be about 110 innings which he's gone over every season but one. GS since 2001: 35 35 24 32 11 31 24 of course 2005 he pitched out of the pen for awhile. I don't think he'll make all his starts but I also doubt he'll suffer a catastrophic season-ending injury. We have depth to cover any starts he misses. You know, like Prior. Really though, if we did sign Schilling and didn't trade anyone, a staff of Schilling, Z, Lilly, Hill, Marquis with Gallagher, Marshall, Hart, Holliman, maybe even Prior and Dempster all available as well.

I did forget about the Renteria clothesline. We'll have Derrek and Lilly stand him up and Fontentot can take a few cuts to make everyone feel better.

Man that really bothers me. Not the clothesline move as much as the lack of any reprecussions whatsoever for it. The Braves released Fick for alegedly for doing something much less bush-league than that. Renteria would probably also spell Fontenot's doom on the ML roster. That would probably turn into an Ace Venture: Pet Detective 'Laces Out, Dan!' stalker story. Hide the macott... oh yeah, we don't have a mascott. Chad, I knew what you were trying to say, it just didn't make any sense. I was talking about how the Sosa trade screwed the '92 team. Not how the Maddux signing screwed the '93 through '03 teams.

One of these days I will do a Marvel style ‘What If…’ on the Maddux signing or maybe the Palmeiro trade ‘What if Raffy didn’t bang that tramp Ryno shackled himself with?’ for TCR. Been thinking about it for a while... Lee Smith trade would be a good one too. While everyone was pimping Marmol for closer in the playoffs I just kept thinking ‘Calvin Schiraldi, Calvin Schiradli…’ (re-post 'cause I'm a re-tard)... Is it OK to call yourself a re-tard or does that get people all upset like when Woods called himself a 'Spaz'?

Coco Crisp? Are you kidding me? Crisp in 2007: .268/.330/.382 Crisp in 2006: .264/.317/.385 Uh, no thank you. Don't we have enough light-hitting guys with no plate discipline on the roster already?

The Real Neal: "Man that really bothers me. Not the clothesline move as much as the lack of any reprecussions whatsoever for it." I agree, it bothers me too. Just like when Carlos Lee leg whipped Walker and Berkman faked getting hit in the head, Dusty and the Cubs did not retaliate. I hated it!!

60 pts of OBP over your BA is pretty good. .07 BB/PA for his career, .086 last year. Cubs BB/PA last year: Lee: .109 Floyd: .109 DeRosa: .102 Murton: .100 Kendall: .095 (as a Cub) Theriot: .083 Ramirez: .077 JJ: .069 Soriano: .053 Great glove, higher upside than JJ, switch-hitter. I'd bring him in as a super-sub, fallback option to Pie. He seems to be about the level of talent you'd get for Dempster imo.

"Chad, I knew what you were trying to say, it just didn’t make any sense. I was talking about how the Sosa trade screwed the ‘92 team. Not how the Maddux signing screwed the ‘93 through ‘03 teams." No. What I am saying is that a the 93 team with Sosa and Maddux would have been much better than the 92 team with Bell and Maddux. That the 93 team would have had a much better chance at winning. That the 92 team with Bell, still wouldn't have been that much better.

Anyway, a 93 team with Maddux but no Myers and Guzman isn't more than a handful of games better, certainly not 13 games better.

Dude, Jorge Bell on the '92 team and maybe they finish .500. but on the 93 you take Frank Castillo's 5 wins and replace them with Maddux's 20 and you get a 15 game difference. But you wouldn't know that cause you ignore pitcher's wins as a stat.

If I have not had a drink of beer after an entire softball doubleheader in the heat, and Cubs prospects are money, and the other 29 GMs are running the liquor store just down the street, I am willing to pay as much money for an All-Star-caliber bottle of beer as the GM is asking, so long as the beer is Exactly what I am thirsty for.

"Dusty and the Cubs did not retaliate." Not that time, but I believe that Edgar was going to get his clock cleaned the next chance anyone on the Cubs got, which is why he totally wussed out and left the game immediately after the inning was over with a big oowie. He also knew that they weren't going to play any more games with us that season, so he was a double wuss.

retaliation is overrated. god knows i loved dlee sitting out a week while soriano was injured because he had to go get him some. ditto for barrett while dlee was injured...that was neat. we saw some in-game pitching retaliation melt down into a loss for the retaliating team not too many weeks ago...

crunch- I did not say retaliate with our big guns. Dusty should brought in someone out of the pen (a Farnsworth type) to send a message to CLee and Berkman. I would not have Z do it, but make sure when it is done, the other team knows why it is done. I am a firm believer in that kind of stuff.

#65: god knows i loved dlee sitting out a week while soriano was injured because he had to go get him some. You're right, individual players should not hurt the team by letting their tempers get to them. But I wanted to cut Lee some slack at the time, and I still do, so I looked up some stats for games during Lee's suspension (7/18 - 7/22) to see what kind of a bite it took: Ward 3/5, 1BB, 2R DeRosa 0/9, 1BB, 1R Moore, 0/4 Total: 3/18, 2BB, 3R So yeah, we didn't get such great production from 1B while Lee was out. Soriano, perhaps somewhat hobbled, went 4/16, 2BB, 3R, 1 RBI over those five games. The team went 3-2, beating the Giants twice (scoring 21 runs over the 2 games) and the D'backs once (scoring 6), but losing the last 2 to said Snakes (scoring 2 runs over both games). My point? These have been the first 20 minutes I have had to myself all day, that's my point. Thanks to Baseball Reference for helping me waste them.

(CA) Phil 2. He seems like such a jerk. Id much rather have a team full of jerks and a world championship than a team full love loveable losers and nothing

Chad, Way to avoid history and logic (yet again). The money saved on Maddux went to pay for four free agents, two of which were useless but two of which were Myers and Guzman. Maddux = no Myers and Guzman, oh wait, I already said that.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

pablo sandoval played 3rd and got a couple ABs (strikeout, single!) in the OAK@SF "exhibition"

mlb officially authenticated the ball of the single he hit.  nice.

he's in surprisingly good shape considering his poor body condition in his last playing seasons.  he's not lean, but he looks healthier.  good for him.
