The Padres released 2B Marcus Giles today. His star has certainly fallen a long way over the last couple of years. And the Reds may have set a record, losing three players off waivers in one day (LHP Phil Dumatrait to PIT and LHP Mike Gosling and INF Pedro Lopez to TOR).

RHP Lincoln Holdzkom is back with the Mesa Solar Sox, except this time he's there representing the Boston Red Sox. Holdzkom was one of two pitchers the Cubs got from FLA for Todd Wellemeyer a couple of years ago (the other one--LHP Zach McCormack--was returned to the Marlins as "damaged goods" midway through the 2006 season and was replaced by 1B-OF Jim Adduci). Holdzkom threw the ball really well in the AFL last year, and got selected by the Houston Astros in the Rule 5 Draft after the Cubs failed to add him to their 40-man roster. But he was unable to crack the Astros 2007 25-man roster, and was returned to the Cubs (actually Iowa) per MLB Rule 6. Holdzkom was inexplicably released by the Cubs at the end of ST (why did they spend $25K to take him and his major league contract back just to release him?), after-which he signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox, spending most of 2007 at AA before a promotion to AAA Pawtucket. Holdzkom was eligible to be a six-year minor league FA after the 2007 season, but apparently re-upped with the BoSox in return for getting a slot in the AFL and probably an NRI to Red Sox ST in 2008. He still throws gas, BTW. And he's only 25. Maybe he'll get selected in the Rule 5 Draft again.

Rob---Good trick question. Ol' Bucketfoot did play for Chicago for three seasons. Trouble is, it was the White Sox.

AZ Phil: "The Padres released 2B Marcus Giles today. His star has certainly fallen a long way over the last couple of years." No surprise here. He has been declining for a few years now. I would be surprised if he is even in the bigs next year. Rob, you still drooling over him?

something went wrong the minute Schmidt agreed to that contract, I forget what he signed for though.

Rob G.: "How did Zito, Schmidt or Durham turn out manny?" Not too good for the money spent by their teams that's for sure, but I don't recall drooling over them.

drooling, saying the Cubs should sign them, it's just a matter of word usage, same EXACT ideas behind them. so you were wrong, I was wrong, life goes on.... but try to satiate your superior complex somewhere else...

Rob G.: "drooling, saying the Cubs should sign them, it’s just a matter of word usage, same EXACT ideas behind them." The same? Really? Ok, whatever makes you feel better...:) And I don't recall saying we should have signed Schmidt, Durham or Zito for the kind of money they signed for. I would have taken Schmidt or Zito though if it was the right deal. I don't recall having much interest in Durham. But, whatever makes you feel better Rob, go right ahead...

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
