Durham Headed to Brewers; Wood Headed to DL?
Milwaukee acquired second baseman Ray Durham from the Giants on Sunday in exchange for Class A outfielder Darren Ford and Triple-A pitcher Steve Hammond. The two teams waited to officially announce the deal until after they had played one another Sunday afternoon at AT&T Park, per the request of Durham, who didn't want to make his Milwaukee debut versus his former mates.
"Personally it was out of respect for the guys in this locker room,"
Durham said, saying his goodbyes in the Giants' clubhouse. "It really
was a stipulation I asked for."
The 36-year-old Durham, hitting .293 AVG / .385 OBP / .414 SLG / 799 OPS could complement and/or replace 25-year-old Rickie Weeks, who is hitting just .218 in 79 games for the Brewers this season with an OPS+ of 82.
Closer to home, Paul Sullivan makes it sound like the Cubs are inching closer to putting Kerry Wood on the DL for the 12th time in his career, owing to ongoing problems with that blister on his right index finger. Sullivan quotes Lou Piniella as saying:
"We're coming to the point where we're going to have to come to a conclusion about what to do."
If the Cubs were to backdate the DL decision to July 12th, Wood would be eligible to get back on the field next Sunday, when the Cubs wrap up their four-game series against the Marlins at Wrigley Field. According to Sullivan, Carlos Marmol will get to wear the closer's hat so long as Wood is unable to pitch. Marmol pitched a perfect ninth to close out the Cubs' 9-0 shutout of Houston on Sunday.

Rex Brothers and Tony Wolters reached five years of MLB Service Time this weekend, so Brothers now cannot be sent outright to the minors without his consent (he is out of minor league options) and Wolters (who has a minor league option left) now cannot be optioned or outrighted to the minors without his consent.

It's not good to play bad teams early because they have the confidence and energy they won't have later in the season after they realize they suck and all is lost.

as of the end of this game (game 9) there's only 1 player on the team hitting more than .250 (j.marisnick).
bryant, baez, contreras, marisnick are the only guys hitting more than .200.

Two awful days of baseball.
On top of that, Dexter Fowler (Angels) tore his ACL and will undergo season ending reconstruction surgery.
He's a hero in my Cub/heart no matter how the remainder of his career goes, but at 35 yrs, he will have a rough road ahead.

these bats are killing me.
they need more than a waffle maker to feed these bats. julio zueleta needs to be hired for batting coach and the ricketts need to toss some serious loot into the fruit budget for him.

Coach Craig Driver tested positive for Coronavirus and was sent back to Chicago. Apparently, no other Cub tested positive. No word about symptoms so it sounds like it was picked up in whatever the regular testing protocol covers including Wed, Thursday and Friday which were negative for the "traveling party".

Sure makes it sound like Schwarber and Lester were among the positives. Hate that for them, especially Jon who has the cancer history and the recent thyroid issue. Hopefully both recover without significant lingering effects.

j.musgrove throws SD's first no-hitter. it would have been a perfect game if he didn't hit a batter.
not bad for his 2nd start for them.

Nats Covid update (wrt Former Cub factor): Brad Hand, Yan Gomes, Alex Avila and Jordy Mercer have all been cleared to return after being away due to COVID-19 protocols. Josh Bell, Kyle Schwarber, Jon Lester and Josh Harrison have not been cleared yet,
Still looking forward to seeing Schwarbs play in a Nats uniform.

Right. Three batter minimum. Hopefully the only time I'll need to be reminded this year.
Hopefully.

I would bet on the bullpen, Blue Jays have 4-5 pretty decent lefties and are ready to sell. Maybe Eckstein, who just got put on the bench in favor of Scutaro, if they are getting tired of Cedeno.

I watched Carlos Zambrano at the All-Star Game, as well as in his first start back, and his arm slot really worries me, because it's down where it was just before he hit the DL.
Lovely...

the last time Z went with the lower arm angle he all sorts of problems with his control. The big concern is that his shoulder is still hurting and he's just compensating for it. Yeah, he might be able to be effective for awhile, but how long?
