PCL Honors to Cashner; Dodgers to Wrigley

-- The I-Cubs' Andrew Cashner was named PCL Pitcher of the Week. That's what winning two starts while allowing one run and just eight hits over 13 innings will do for you. And let's not forget: he won the second of those games while dealing with the pressure of having TCR's very own Mike Wellman in the stands.

-- The Giants fan site, 22gigantes, pointed me to an mlb.com article in which the 30 MLB clubs were ranked for drafting success, based on All-Star appearances, Cy Young Awards, etc., won by their draftees in recent years. Cub draftees earned six such awards—four All-Star appearances plus ROY Awards for Kerry Wood and Geovany Soto—which tied the team for 11th place with the Giants, Marlins, and Cardinals.

(I'm a bit confused here since the article says the numbers are based on "awards won by players drafted by teams over the past decade." Wood was drafted in 1995 and won the ROY in 1998. ???)

The Nationals and Red Sox (17 player awards) led the way. Among other NL Central teams, the Brewers (10) were tied for 4th place. The Pirates, Astros, and Reds were all down near the bottom.

The same article offers a different calculation of drafting success based on a variety of individual player stats accumulated by draftees. By that figuring, the Athletics, Diamondbacks, and Red Sox lead the way. The Cubs are not in the top 10.

--By all accounts, Carlos Zambrano's simulated game, consisting of 73 pitches Monday at Wrigley Field, went well, and the plan is for him to return to the rotation on the road, i.e., sometime on or after next Monday, when the Cubs begin a nine-game trip in Pittsburgh. 

-- After taking three of five against two first-place clubs on the road, the Cubs continue to match up with the big boys, as the red-hot Dodgers, winners of 12 of 14 and owners of an MLB-best record of 16-5 in May, come to Wrigley for a three-game series beginning tonight.

Aramis Ramirez will be rested for a few days because of a bone bruise on his left hand. (An MRI and x-rays concluded there was no fracture.) Lou says that moving Ramirez to the DL is not currently a consideration. (Had the link and lost it, but that's what he said.)

-By all accounts, Carlos Zambrano's simulated game, consisting of 73 pitches Monday at Wrigley Field, went well... So did he get out of the 3rd inning? ("went well" is relative but it's gotta be better than his 49 pitches on opening day)

I vote for a 6-man rotation with Z, Dempster, maybe Wells going every 5 days regardless and the others getting an extra day or two of rest. Silva seems to have some aches and pains, Lilly could probably use a day off on occasion and Gorz could go 120 to get through 6 innings and be less worried about his arm. Or trade Silva while his value his high.

Cubs aren't actually on the hook for that much and they probably wouldn't get much in return, but you never know. problem is most teams are still figuring how far they want to go for it this season. the other problem is he's Carlos Silva. I suppose Wells or Lilly could be traded easier. I'd like to keep Wells cause he's gonna be cheap for another 2 seasons, but you'd get teams that are already out of it interested as he's more of a long-term investment. Teams are always looking for lefty starters and I can't imagine Lilly is going to be resigned. Dempster or Wells to the pen is the other desperate option I guess. The one time the Cubs need pitchers to get hurt, they all stay healthy.

yeah, his numbers look a lot worse than his play, f'sure. a guy like him should be able to put in more than 5-6ip, though. speaking of...the guy seems to be just fine so far through his first couple innings...a trip to the pen for him might not be that radical of an idea even though it seems lou/hendry don't have that as an option last time they were asked about it. "Hasn't topped 100 pitches yet this year, should be in the 4-4.5 ERA range when it's all said and done." i'd be a little careful with that one...he's showing signs of being hit like he was when he was having "problems."

I think it's Jonathan Mayo who's confused, not you. That article is kind of a mash. Besides Willis, Prior (who did not play) and Soto, who is the 4th Cub drafted between 2000-2009 who was an All Star? Is he mistakenly including Kerry Wood again? And, although they didn't sign him, the Cubs drafted Khalil Greene who later was ROY in 2004.

So what happens if Dempster goes into Lous office and tells him that he would go to the pen. There is no way the cubs stick with 4 lefties in pen if Gorzelany is the chosen one.

Demp's 10th start on the season - glad to see him kick into 5th gear. Cubs only 2-7 in his starts prior to tonights gem, with the 2 wins coming with Silva-like run support (8 and 9 runs).

    i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

    it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

    I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

    I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

    Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH. 

    He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

    You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

    Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

    I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

    Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

    Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

    The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

    I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

    Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day. 

     

    That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).
