Hendry on Brink of Trade Deadline Fail

With less than 48 hours to go on the trade deadline and the Cubs season over long ago, Hendry seems on the brink of not being able to move any of his overpriced talent.

Well-done sir.

The latest of course is that Derrek Lee wouldn't waive his NTC to go to the Angels  who happen to reside in Southern California where he is building a home. As a 10/5 man, he has earned that right,  so fair enough. But please don't invoke the love of the city or your teammates because you're kind of screwing them over.

"I think the bottom line is family. I like Chicago, I enjoy my teammates. It was the decision we made."

You may be thinking that he just didn't want to go to the Angels who are pretty much out of it, but according to Bruce Levine, the Rangers came up with an offer as well and they're very well on their way to the playoffs at the moment. I don't know anything about Lee's personel life, but for the $13M he's making this year, it seems like he could overcome the 2-month inconvenience. Since Lee is still having a crap year and the team is obviously moving on past him for 2011, it'd be nice if he was benched for prolonged period of times to start giving whomever the Cubs think might be next year's first basemen some much needed game experience (Colvin, Soriano, Ramirez, Hoffpauir, etc).

- Ted Lilly seemed like a slam dunk to get moved, but teams seem to be balking at picking up his salary. The Cubs should of course just offer to pay most of it, if it can net them a decent pair of prospects, but Hendry still can't figure out how free agent compensation works, so I'm doubtful he'll figure out the idea of sunk costs. The Phillies are of course out now as they picked up Roy Oswalt, leaving the Mets, Twins and Dodgers as the most likely targets, although all seem hesitant at this late hour.

On the other hand, if these teams are so hesitant to pick up his salary or Lee's, both should easily clear waivers and if they don't, dear god Hendry, just let them go and save the money since there's no way in hell you'll offer them arbitration cause you never do that.

- I haven't heard much on the Ryan Theriot front lately past the Rockies and Tigers rumors. Xavier Nady's continued awfulness has nullified his trade value.

So at this moment, we all have the joy of following a terrible team that can't even conduct a proper fire sale. Cubs fever...catch it.

The non-waiver trade deadline is one hour prior to the end of the waiver period. And then the new waiver period begins at 05:00 EDT on Saturday. Because weekends are only considered "business days" during Spring Training, players cannot be placed on Trade Waivers until Monday August 2 at 2 PM EDT. And therefore the first batch of players will clear waivers at 1 PM EDT on Wednesday 8/4. So there can be no trades starting at 4 PM EDT Saturday until Wednesday at 1 PM EDT.

Both have really turned it on offensively over the past few weeks, and the looming 2B vacuum at the big league level makes it seem like a no-brainer to see how Thomas can perform against AAA pitching in a significant number of ABs before camp breaks next spring. ========================================== ROSS B: As things stand right now, I believe three of the players who are eligible to be Rule 55 Minor League Free-Agents (OF Brad Snyder, RHP Thomas Diamond, and C-IF Robinson Chirinos) will be added to the Cubs 40-man roster by the deadline for adding Rule 55 Minor League FAs (no later than the 4th day following the conclusion of the World Series). Players who are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft must be added to the 40-man roster no later than 11/20 to avoid being eligible for selection, and I believe RHP Chris Archer, INF Darwin Barney, and OF Brandon Guyer are the three Cubs players eligible for selection in the December 2010 Rule 5 Draft who will be added to the 40-man roster, although Guyer might have to have a good showing in the AFL to secure the slot. Of those six, I would think Barney and Snyder will very likely be added to the 40-man roster and placed on the Cubs MLB Active List in September (Snyder will be out of options once he is added to the 40, so the Cubs need to get him as much playing time as possible in September and Spring Taining 2011 to find out if he can hit big league pitching), while the other four might not be added until the applicable deadlines because the Cubs need to create roster space for them. (Archer, Barney, Chirinos, and Guyer would have three minor league options available in 2011, while Diamond would have one left over from when he was previously on 40-man rosters). Archer and Guyer will just take the roster slots opened when Lee and Lilly file for free-agency, while Diamond and Chirinos will have to take the roster slots of players dropped from the 40-man roster prior to the 4th day following the conclusion of the World Series. Some of the roster moves the Cubs might make in September and October would be to transfer Esmailin Caridad from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL (players on the 60-day DL do not have to be reinstated until the conclusion of the MLB Free-Agency Filing Period) and release Bob Howry (that opens up slots for Barney and Snyder), and either release or trade Xavier Nady and maybe outright Jeff Gray (he will be out of options next season) to open slots for Chirinos and Diamond. And then Jeff Baker, Koyie Hill, and Angel Guzman are likely 12/12 non-tender candidates, although the Cubs could outright any of the three prior to 12/12 to clear additional roster slots (and if that happens after to the conclusion of the season, the player will almost certainly refuse the Outright Assignment and become an Article XX minor league FA, presuming the player is not claimed off waivers).

I know he hasn't done much at all to impress this year, but I would have liked to see Jeff Baker get to play 2b every day, vs rhp and lhp, for an extended period of time earlier this year. Instead we got force fed a platoon and then Theriot. Now if Riot happens to be traded and Baker gets regular ab's, they'll just say it's at the end of the year and doesn't matter (kind of like Baker's performance last year). It's hard to believe but Baker has only started 13 games all year at 2b. I'm not saying Baker would turn into anything, but it's been a problem throughout Cubs history to get rid of guys before we know what they can do. Last year Baker's BABIP for the Cubs was way out of whack, and then he got off to a slow start platooning and got buried on the bench. It's kind of crazy to be getting rid of people when you never gave them regular playing time (and it's not like we had a solid starter blocking him).

per Rosenthal: Twins get Capps and cash for Ramos and LHP Joe Testa, recently demoted from AA to A would have been a nice trading chip had the Cubs gotten Capps...woulda, shoulda, coulda. Kerry Wood coming off the DL tomorrow. Lilly for KW...just to add to the DLee and LouPa lame duck but feel good, wrap-up the 2010 season tour.

As we have seen, Hendry gives the veteran the last say. Always. Dusty. Lou. DLee. Any "good soldier". Indeed, we have not reached the deadline yet. So -we have to wait and see...

    I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

    I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

    Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH. 

    He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

    You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

    Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

    I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

    Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

    Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

    The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

    I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

    Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day. 

     

    That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

    That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

    The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
    But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
    I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
    Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
    I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
    Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
    With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

    My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
    It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
    I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
    We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
    But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

    Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

    If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

    Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

    Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

    Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!
