D-Cubs & Chiefs Deal with Tourists and Nuts at Fitch Park

Richard Jones blasted a solo HR onto 8th Street and drove in another run with a single and LHP Eric Jokisch (2010 11th round pick out of Nortwestern) threw three shutout innings with five strikeouts, leading the Peoria Chiefs to a 6-3 victory over the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies Class “A” affiliate) on Field #2, while next-door on Field #3 the Daytona Cubs were cracking the Modesto Nuts (Rockies Advanced “A” affiliate) by a score of 11-4, as Matt Cerda went 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Junior Lake had three hits (a double and two singles), scored one run, and drove in another, and Evan Crawford doubled, singled, stole a base (home), scored twice, and knocked in two runs, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training action at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ, this afternoon.

Cubs #5 starter Andrew Cashner made his final Arizona start this morning on Field #1, throwing three innings (and getting hammered) in an intrasquad game between the Iowa Cubs and the Tennessee Smokies.

Although they are assigned to the Iowa squad, RHP Blake Parker and Hung-Wen Chen pitched in the Daytona game this afternoon rather than the intrasquad game this morning, because they were bumped by Cashner.

In Minor League Camp roster news, a number of players were released or demoted today:

A little surprised that Shafer was released. His stats weren't amazing by any stretch, but last year was his first as a reliever. I guess he couldn't crack the Smokies bullpen. Even if there were some character issues, releasing a 2nd round pick after just two full seasons is a rare occurence for the Cubs. Too bad. Having lived in Murray, Ky for a while I hate to see a former Murray St. Thoroughbred get cut in Perconte. I have some friends who say he's a really good guy. And, a whole lot of people that seem ready for Iowa are going to be in TN. They'll just have to force managements hand. I do think there are too many 4A guys in Iowa, but thats the trend nowadays.

The weird thing I noticed about a week ago is that the Milb.com team website's rosters are spot on with who's targeted for each team (*save Buchter for Cales). Ususally they aren't updated until the rosters are announced. Milb.com gets better every year. JR Mathes is living proof of how important LH pitching is for an organization. He could pitch for the I-Cubs until he's 35. Future Minor league pitching coordinator. Robinson is the Player/Coach on the DL Watson is released Trinidad is released Berg is released Muyco is released Buchter is sent down to AA I am not saying Mathes is released because I've said that for three years and he always pitches more than 100 innings a year. Blake Parker has pitched better than Muyco, and I think Diamond has more upside than Berg. Phil, you the man.

They only show where guys ended the year last year, with the addition of this years 40 man roster guys that were assigned to those teams. I was at Fitch today and talked to someone who should know and some of the posted names and where they are, or are going , is not correct. This is based on my conversation today (Fri) and from what should be a most reliable source. ============================ CHILDERS & JUNIOR: The rosters at milb.com are based upon info milb.com gets directly through eBis (baseball's in-house information system), and they do not change the rosters during Minor League Camp to reflect the current working group (squad) for each Cub minor league affiliate (Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona, Peoria, and Boise/Mesa). The fact that some of the Cubs minor league rosters listed at milb.com are starting to match the current Cubs working group rosters is only because the Cubs have recently moved a lot of the minor league players and pitchers to the affiliate where the player ended the 2010 season. Again, the rosters at milb.com are not changed when a player moves to a different working group (squad) during Minor League Camp. When I list the rosters for a particular Cub minor league working group (squad), it is based upon what I actually observe on the field at Fitch Park. The assignments to a working group are somewhat informal and the Cubs minor league bosses move players to different working groups (usually downward, but occasionally a player is moved up) without a press release or eBis notification. Sometimes a player is moved back & forth. For example, LHP Casey Harman started Minor League Camp with the Peoria squad, then he was moved down to Boise/Mesa, and now he is back with Peoria again, apparently because they need another LHRP at Peoria. But he could be back with Boise/Mesa tomorrow. None of this is reflected or recorded at milb.com. You only read about it here.

The Cubs' new 2nd bullpen catcher (replacing Corey Miller) is going to be Danny Fatheree, who some of you may know was Kerry Wood's catcher in high school. The Cubs (probably at the request of KW) signed Fatheree to a minor league player contract in 2008 but he spent the Summer as a coach-mentor at Fitch Park (just like Scott McLain did last year and John Urick will this year). Besides being a really nice guy, Fatheree spent a lot of time working one-on-one with Robinson Chirinos after Chirinos was sent to Fitch Park during the 2008 season to learn to be a catcher. So he's really more than just a bullpen catcher.

San Diego had earlier benefited when Ryan Ludwick knocked a ball out of second baseman Skip Schumaker's glove. Shafer caught me off-guard, but okay. Perconte really had himself a decent season in A+, but he's 25 and not a big loss from a system perspective. Still think Spencer could put up big numbers in Iowa, but he's gotta force his way up. AzPhil - how has Liria looked this spring? I had been hoping to see him at Peoria. Is he still low 90's, plus change, decent breaking ball? Carpenter in AA at least means that he's going to be starting, right? So there's that positive, though I'm not sure there's that much improvement he's going to make that he needed to go back to AA. Wonder who gets pushed out of the rotation - certainly not McNutt. That leaves Cabrera, Rusin, Raley, Dolis ... wondering if they finally shift Dolis to pen work.

As I mentioned in the previous comment, moves and re-assignments at Minor League Camp are not written in stone. Any one of these players could get released, moved down another level, or moved back up to Iowa at any time. But usually player movement is downward, although the last week of Minor League Camp is usually when you will see some movement in the opposite direction as other players go on the DL or get released and need to be replaced.

He pitched well enough last year that as long as he is pitching OK at EXST, he will probably be one of the first to go up to Peoria. As for Carpenter, he was used as a one-inning reliever in the AFL last fall, and Jake Muyco was the Cubs starter (each of the five MLB clubs assigned to a given AFL team designates one of their pitchers as a starter). Do you think the Cubs would have designated Jake Muyco as a starter in the AFL if they projected Carpenter as a starter? I don't think so. For example, Andrew Cashner was a starter for the Mesa Solar Sox in the AFL in 2009. And Carpenter has been used exclusively as a one-inning reliever so far in Minor League Camp. I don't see anything to indicate that the Cubs plan on moving him back to the starting rotation at any time in the near future.

I think they project Carpenter as a starter but until he can throw an off-speed pitch for a strike--which he failed to do in the one inning I saw him this spring--he is of little use as a starter. You can't throw fastballs for five innings. It's the same as with Cashner. While he was learning to throw/control offspeed stuff, he relieved. =============================================== VA PHIL: Even though he was still a work in progress and had not yet learned to throw his change-up for strikes at the time, Cashner was never-the-less used exclusively as a starter in the AFL in 2009.

The only disagreement I have with the comment above is that some pitchers who go to the AFL might have come close to reaching their club's limit of innings pitched in a season. In that case, it might still be worth seeing them in action against top notch talent, but only in brief one inning appearances. That being said, if Carpenter has only been pitching in one inning appearances this spring, then it seems likely that he will be a relief pitcher at least to start. I personally think that is where he will end up, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in the rotation instead of a couple of guys at Tennessee. But who knows, maybe the Cubs think that this will accelerate his progress and get him to the majors faster?

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

    Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
    The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
    Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
    You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
    That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
    But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
    So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
    Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
    Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

    And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
