Geiger Counters Giant Rally with Walk-Off H-Bomb

After watching the EXST Giants score four runs in the top of the 7th inning (last inning) to take an 8-7 lead, Dustin Geiger slugged a two-out three-run game-winning walk-off HR in the bottom of the 7th to give the EXST Cubs a 10-8 victory over the Giants on Field #3 and a split in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader played this morning at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

The Giants edged the Cubs 2-1 in the game that was played on Field #2. Both games were seven-inning affairs.

The 19-year old 6’3 200+ Geiger was the Cubs 2010 24th round draft pick out of Merritt Island HS (Brevard County, FL), receiving an “overslot” bonus ($150K) to give up a chance to play college ball at nearby U. of Central Florida. He has struggled at the plate for much of his short Cub minor league career, but the big RH hitter had a really big day at the plate today, reaching base all four times he batted (two singles, a walk, and the game-winning HR), while driving-in four runs.

Also on Field #3, 19-year old Kyung-Min Na had three hits (two singles and a double) and two stolen bases, scored two runs, and knocked-in two more, while making a couple of nice running catches in the outfield. Na received a reported $725K bonus when he signed with the Cubs in 2009, and at the time was rated by all the scouts who saw him play as the “fastest HS player in South Korea.”

Ready for a laugh? The Bleacher Report suggests the Cubs should trade for Carlos Beltran...which isn't likely going to happen because of his salary and the Cubs probably won't be close to the division lead come June/July, but the real kicker is what the guy says the Cubs should trade for 2-3 months of Beltran... "...what will it take to get him? The Mets will likely be looking for little more than salary relief and a couple of "B" or even "C" level prospects. Think Josh Vitters, Reggie Golden and Marquez Smith — players in that mold. From sun-times... Saturday night lights Tonight’s game will be the first on a Saturday night at Wrigley Field since Aug. 31, 2002. That was a rescheduled game that became the second of a doubleheader. The last regularly scheduled Saturday night game at Wrigley was June 20, 1998.

Although Thomas Diamond's slot on the 40-man roster is not needed right now or probably anytime soon (the Cubs already had a slot available for Doug Davis), the Cubs have outrighted him to Iowa anyway. Because he has been outrighted previously in his career, Diamond has the right to refuse the outright assignment and be a free-agent immediately, or he can wait to exercise his right to be a FA until the end of the MLB regular season.

Diamond indeed off the 40 man roster for DD =============================== CUBSTER: Contrary to what was reported by Carrie, Thomas Diamond was NOT outrighted to make room on the 40-man roster for Doug Davis. There already was one slot open, and even if the 40-man roster had been full, Brian Schlitter could have been transferred to the 60-day DL (he has already spent 53 days on the 15-day DL, and is nowhere close to returning to action). I would say a more likely reason for the Cubs outrighting Diamond now was that if he got claimed off waivers, the Cubs would save some of the $100K they are paying him on his minor league split (he gets more than the minor league split minimum because he spent 1/3 of the 2010 season on the Cubs MLB Active List). If the Cubs release Diamond (which will probably come next), they have to eat his entire minor league split salary, unless he signs a major league contract with another MLB club (which would be VERY unlikely given that nobody claimed him off outright waivers).

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.
