Giants Take Two from Cubs at Indian School Park

Freddy Sanchez (2011 shoulder surgery rehab) had three hits and Jonathan Jones blasted a three-run home run, leading the Giants past the Cubs 6-4 and 3-2 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader this morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Both games were seven-inning affairs.

On a rehab assignment with the EXST Giants, Sanchez played 3rd base for four innings in the game on Field #2, and led-off the bottom of the first four frames. He grounded out 5-3 in his first AB, before drilling singles in each of his next three Plate Appearances.

Cubs 2011 30th round draft pick RHP Arturo Maltos-Garcia (July 2011 TJS rehab) made his pro game debut, working one inning and allowing the J. Jones three-run bomb after issuing two walks. He struggled with his command throughout the inning, throwing 27 pitches but only 14 strikes. Maltos-Garcia suffered his elbow injury in a JUCO playoff game at Central Arizona College a year ago this month.

In EXST Cubs roster news, LHP Sheldon McDonald and RHP Charles Thomas have been moved up to Peoria.

In six Cactus League EXST games (12.0 IP), the 23-year old McDonald posted a 1.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, with one walk and 18 strikeouts. McDonald attended Northeastern University and pitched for Team Canada in international competition prior to getting selected by the Cubs in the 33rd round of the 2011 June draft.

The 23-year old Thomas was selected by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Edward Waters College (the legendary Buck O'Neil's alma mater), and played 3B his first two years in pro ball, hitting a combined 244/297/357 in 109 minor league games. The 6’4 230+ Lee Smith clone was converted to a RHP two years ago, although he was a two-way player (3B/RHRP) in college. In 26 minor league games 2010-11, Thomas put up a 3.42 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, with 30 K in 26.1 IP. He had a 0.00 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP with 3/9 BB/K in five Cactus League EXST games (8.1 IP) in 2012. His fastball has been clocked at 98 MPH, but his progress on the mound has been slowed by on-going control issues.

Mon, 05/07/2012 - 8:22pm — Charlie How's Whitenack looked, AZ? Any thoughts on what Vogelbach, Shoulders, Bautista, Gretzky, Dunston Jr., and Candelario will probably do after EXST ends? Thanks, as always! =================================== CHARLIE: Rob Whitenack has looked OK, but nowhere near how he looked pre-TJS. He was the Cubs #2 starting pitcher prospect this time last year. As things stand right now, I believe Xavier Batista will be playing RF at Peoria sometime in the near future, Shoulders, Vogelbach, and Candelario will be assigned to Boise, and Dunston and Gretzky will be at AZL Cubs. However, this is still very much subject to change, especially with many of the Cubs hitters (including Vogelbach and Shoulders) currently struggling. Also, Dunston Jr has been the most-improved playerv over the course of EXST, and so he could end up at Boise if he continues to play as he has over the past couple of weeks.

If nothing else, I'm a creature of what are you doing for me now. Some of the things I've been bitching about are fading away. And I really haven't been very specific about my TheoBitches other than saying, occasionally, why the blind adoration? Team is looking good right now, so that is what counts. I'm actually watching this team whenever I get a chance to sneak in a few innings. So, already, very different than last year. 80 wins!!!!

AZ Phil, I notice that Baez didn't play in either of the games yesterday, after getting hit in the forearm a few days ago. Please tell me it was just an extra day off and NOT that he sustained anything more than a bruise.

I was listening to NPR on the way home yesterday and heard this story about a cultural historian commenting on some blogs and heard this gem of a quote: "Comments sections are the cesspools of the Internet. They're the fetid sinks into which we throw the things that we'd rather not acknowledge we produce." Yeah, that's about right.

extend Melvin through 2015, Roenicke through 2014 with option for 2015.

DeJesus RF, Campana CF, Castro SS, LaHair 1B, Soriano LF, Stewart 3B, Soto C, Cardenas 2B, Dempster P I'm getting the sense that Barney is losing favor with the new regime.

OPSs in the low to mid 600s, no speed or power, and playing a non premium position will do that for you... I posted more on this a few days ago, but Cardenas has the potential to be a much better hitter than Barney and is cheaper---and there pretty much a wash in most other skill areas--so why not try to go for a small upgrade here and maybe trade Barney, or move Barney to the super utility role and get rid of Baker. Thankfully they are doing the right thing with DeWitt. I hope that trend continues with some of this other dead weight on the roster.

Bruce Bochy is a dick. Brandon Belt is making his 2nd start of the year against a lefty. 1st was against Cliff Lee. Tonight is vs Clayton Kershaw

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
