Cubs Win One & Tie the Other at Indian School Park

Rock Shoulders belted a two-run home run and Shawon Dunston Jr doubled twice and scored two runs, but Kentrell Hill rifled a game-tying RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th to enable the Giants to avoid defeat on Field #1, while Ian Dickson and three relievers were combining to toss a three-hit shutout as the Cubs blanked the Giants 1-0 in the other game on Field #2, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader played this morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Both games were seven-inning contests (the game on Field #1 was called after seven innings with the score tied 5-5).

Micah Gibbs continued his rehab assignment, catching the shutout on Field #2. He racked-up seven more Plate Appearances today (batting once each inning), going 2-6 with two singles and a walk, and a stolen base. He also threw out a baserunner trying to steal 2nd base. In four EXST games, Gibbs is now 3-17 with seven walks.

Randy Wells got blasted today at Sacramento, giving up 7 runs in 5.0 IP, 8 Hits, 3 BB. 6K. Iowa lost 9-4. The I-Cubs offense sucked too except for Anthony Rizzo hitting his 13th HR, a 2 run shot in the first.... and a triple, going 3 for 4 Recent EXST pupil of Az Phil, Gioskar Amaya got a pinch hit double in the 8th.

From Rotoworld Kyle Kendrick will start in place of Vance Worley (elbow) Wednesday night against the Cubs. Worley was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with right elbow inflammation and will miss at least his next couple of turns in the starting rotation. Kendrick has an ugly 7.32 ERA and 12/9 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings this season and can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=16944 Junior Lake, SS/3B, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 3-for-5, 2B, R, 3 RBI, K. On base 19 times in his first nine games; .344/.475/.594 overall. Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 3-for-4, 3B, HR (13), R, 2 RBI, K. Six home runs in last eight games and up to .359/.420/.704 overall; it's getting close to the time for the Cubs to find a way to get him in the lineup. Gerardo Concepcion, LHP, Cubs (Low-A Peoria): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K. First good start lowers ERA to 8.10. Commanding an upper 80s fastball very well.

Not even baseball related.... Google announces big change to how search results are delivered, says new search tool will think more like a human. WTF ARE THEY THINKING?????????????????????

How close did Berkman come to signing with the Cubs? “It would have been closer if we actually had the meeting,” he said. “I signed with the Cardinals and Jim was flying down to (Houston) to go to dinner (with me). “It was funny because when he was at the airport, the Cardinals and I were still very far apart. And then it was like as he got on the airplane, I got a call from St. Louis and they doubled the offer. I was like, ‘All right, that’s where I wanted to play.’” Berkman still enjoyed a night out and ended up going to dinner with Hendry, a very entertaining personality. Recruiting players to Chicago isn’t that difficult. The Cubs are taken care of around the city and the day games open up your nights.

From Rotoworld: Lendy Castillo has been diagnosed with a moderate groin strain and may be placed on the disabled list. The Cubs have flown in Scott Maine just in case Castillo's groin shows no improvement over the next several hours. The Rule 5 Draft pick has posted a rough 7.04 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 7 2/3 innings this season.

In reply to by Rob G.

Lendy Castillo has accrued 42 days of MLB Service Time so far (MLB Service Time started to accrue beginning with MLB Opening Day on 4/4), and if he were to go on the DL today and stay there until rosters expand on September, he'll pick-up another 33 days from September 1st through the last day of the MLB regular season on 10/3, for a total of 75 days. He needs 90 days for the Rule 5 restrictions to be removed, so if he comes up short at the end of the 2012 MLB regular season, he would remain a Rule 5 player into the 2013 season, but would only have to spend 15 days on the Cubs MLB 25-man roster at the beginning of next season, and then the Rule 5 restrictions would be removed and he could be optioned to the minors in mid-April. Also, if he were to be placed on the DL today he could be sent to Fitch Park to throw in weekly "sim" games, before going on a 30-day minor league rehab assignment at Daytona in August prior to being reinstated fromn the DL on September 1st. The Cubs should not even think twice about putting Lendy Castillo on the DL.

Signed: RHP Mike MacDougal (released by Dodgers), C Brian Esposito (released by Reds) Recalled: RHP Casey Coleman Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Brad Zapenas, SS Jonathan Mota Reinstated from DL: RHP Ben Wells

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.
