Remember the Alamo!

Tyler Alamo blasted a two-run home run over the LF fence and onto the roof of a house on the north side of 8th Street to give the Cubs an early 2-0 lead, and Kelvin Freeman, Shawon Dunston Jr, Jacob Hannemann, Jeimer Candelario, Yasiel Balaguert, and Jordan Hankins drilled six consecutive two-out hits to highlight a five-run 6th, as the Cubs hammered out 17 hits and drubbed the Angels 10-3 in Arizona Instructional League action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa.

The 6'4 Alamo was the Cubs 2013 24th round pick out of Cypress HS in Cypress, CA, and the Cubs gave him an "overslot" $100K bonus to convince him to give up his opportunity to play college ball at D-1 powerhouse Cal State - Fullerton. 

Eric Aguilera belted a two-run triple and then scored himself on an Andrew Ray SF to account for all three Angel runs.

Cubs 2013 3rd round draft pick Jacob Hannemann (right elbow ligament sprain) saw his first game action today in nearly two months, serving as a DH and hitting second in the lineup. He reached base three times in five PA on two singles and an HBP. He also stole a base. 

After achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and serving two years on an LDS mission after graduating from high school, the Hawaiian-born Hannemann enrolled at BYU, where he joined his younger brother Micah on the Cougar football team (Jacob played cornerback) while also playing CF on the baseball team (WCC Freshman of the Year and Louisville Slugger first-team Freshman All-American). Because he was 21 years old when he started college, Hannemann was the rare "draft-eligible freshman." He is a hyper-aggressive player, running the bases and playing outfield defense with a "crash & burn" style that you often see when a football player (especially one who plays defensive back) plays baseball.

I would say as things stand right now, the Kane County Cougars 2014 Opening Day outfield looks to be Dunston-Hannemann-Balaguert in LF-CF-RF, and if so, that could be a very good outfield.  

The top pitching performance of the day was delivered by Cubs starting pitcher Jose Arias, who tossed three dominating innings of no-run/no-hit ball with four strikeouts. The 22-year old 6'6 right-hander features a 94 MPH fastball, a plus-slider, and an improving change-up, and he will very likely be a member of the Kane County starting rotation in 2014 (could even be the ace of the staff), although if he throws in Minor League Camp next March like he has so far at Instructs, it is not inconceivable that he could make the Daytona rotation out of Spring Training.

CUBSTER: Tyler Alamo definitely has upside (plus-power, strong arm, good instincts), but he is presently a very raw player, both offensively and defensively. He will probably be a long-term (five-years plus) project. I would describe him as a young Mark Parent-type.

AZ Phil -- I'm hoping to catch some of the Cubs' Arizona Instructional League games Friday through next Tuesday, Oct. 15 and I haven't located a schedule online. Do you know where I can find that? If not, can you post where and when they'll be playing? I'll be coming out from Illinois and I'd hate to get all the way out there and not be able to find a schedule. Thanks!

    i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

    small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

    No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

    The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

    RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

    Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song. 

     

    In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.   

     

    Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

    who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

    while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
