Martin & Hodges Are Batman 1-A & 1-B in 10-8 Cubs Victory

Trey Martin laced three doubles (one line-drive into the LF corner, one line-drive off the left-field fence, and one line drive into the left-center alley), walked, drove-in two runs, and scored another, Jesse Hodges singled twice, doubled, collected two RBI, and scored twice, and Michael Wagner threw three innings of one-hit shutout ball, as the Cubs outlasted the Angels 10-8 in AZ Instructional League action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa.

Martin also commited two tactical baserunning gaffes as the result of being over-aggressive, making the third out at 3rd base in the bottom of the 3rd inning while trying to stretch one of his doubles into a triple, and then getting thrown out 6-5 trying to advance from 2nd base to 3rd base on a routine ground ball to the SS in the bottom of the 6th.

The lanky 20-year old from Georgia missed most of the 2013 season after undergoing shoulder surgery (non-throwing shoulder) in April, and he is just now rounding back into playing shape. Known more as a defensive whiz than an offensive force, Martin has been driving the ball with authority throughout Instructs, a possible indication that the chronic shoulder problem he had may have kept him from reaching his full potential as a hitter.

Cubs 2013 19th round draft pick Will Remillard (Coastal Carolina U.) made his professional game debut today, serving as a DH and going 1-3 with a single and an HBP. Remillard signed with the Cubs right at the July deadline (receiving a $150K "overslot" bonus), but was unable to play during the minor league regular season because of a back injury. FWIW, Remillard was Josh Conway's catcher in college (Conway was the Cubs 4th round draft pick in 2012, and is presently rehabbing from a fractured elbow suffered in an EXST game last May).

RHP (ex-OF) Johermyn Chavez got hammered in his one inning of work, allowing three runs on two doubles, a triple, a single, and a walk. Chavez was converted to a pitcher this past Summer and will be a Rule 55 minor league free-agent (so-called "six-year minor league free-agent") after the World Series, unless he & the Cubs agree to a 2014 minor league successor contract in the meantime.

Kirby Pellant tripled, singled, walked, and scored two runs for the Angels in a losing cause.

cards pitching domination...up 2 games to 0.

Why in the fuck did the Dodgers remove Paco Rodriguez from the playoff roster?

cruddy september, cruddy 1st round playoff...probably saw some fatigue issue or something, too, but i haven't heard anything about that.

Anibal Sanchez no-no through 6. Six walks though and 12 K's

116 pitches...think he's done...then again his manager is jim "i throw guys 120-130+ pitches a game and no one cares, take that dusty" leyland. he threw a 130 pitch outing earlier in the year...and a 125 pitch outing. ...and his night is done.

AZ Phil, how does Malave look behind the plate? Thanks.

this is a few days old but an interesting writeup from fangraphs on Torey Lovullo the Boston Bench coach. I'm not sure he's available for interview until Boston is eliminated from the playoffs but Jedstein knows him well. Article comments on lineup construction, defensive shifts, platooning and a few other things. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/torey-lovullo-...

I like him after that read

there sure are a lot of DET fans in attendance @BOS for this game...

Michigan people are everywhere because so many of them flee the state to get jobs, then there isn't much for them back home when they get their careers established. Wrigleyville seems like 25% MI people.

WOW! grand slam ortiz, bottom 8th, 2 outs...to tie the game. crazy.

bottom 9th...single...error moving the runner to 2nd...wild pitch moving the runner to 3rd...single...BOS wins.

That was a game!

Doug Dascenzo named Braves 3B Coach. Awesome! He totally sucked, but was a favorite childhood Cub nonetheless: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9824446/dou...

I wouldn't say he sucked -- he was a role player for few seasons; a 4th or 5th outfielder who could steal a base for you, be a pinch runner and score a run -- be a good late inning defensive outfielder and, during his best seasons, make a contribution on offense when filling in for a regular. Played hard. You need a guy or two like that for your bench.

Good deal - much better ballpark experience than at the Ted. Atlanta fans are buying in and showing up.

It’s a shame that they had to burn Cishek with a five run lead. I guess they could have used Brach or Caratini. Probably not enough time to warm up Caratini. Wouldn’t want to risk blowing the lead with Brach.

gonna be in ATL over the 4th and catching the young braves club in person.  i really don't like going to that park (hey, who wants 3-4 hours of the "tommy hawk chawp"?), but i wanna see this collection of kids.

Kyle Ryan playing like a man who wants to keep his big league roster spot - well done!!

if javy has the ball you gotta play like you're on a basketball court.  until the play is dead, no matter what your view is, that ball could be coming at you at any time from any angle.

bote also goofed earlier in the season playing 3rd during a lester start by not knowing how extreme one needs to cover for him.  yeah, technically it should be lester's play, but realistically the 3rd baseman has more range to cover with lester on the mound.

Barnette’s 88-91 mph fastball really is, uh, not very special.

But for Flowers and the pitchers spot, the Braves lineup is relentless. When McCann plays, the only hole is the pitchers spot. Tough club.

    welcome to the cubs barnette.

6 pitches to his 1st batter, solo HR.

you're gonna fit in just fine.

Thanks Phil. What kind of prospect(s) do you think it would take to pick up Melky?

Not the first time Bote has frozen on a catchable ball from Javy at second ... and leads to two unearned runs. Damn. Love Bote, but when you’re playing with Javy, you better expect the unexpected

    mission accomplished.

also, wow at that 10 mile long leash teheran got to totally suck.

Pro tip to the Cubs: score a ton of runs, then score a ton more. These Braves specialize in pulverizing and bludgeoning teams into oblivion, particularly after the six inning.

The Cubs have officially signed three more 2019 draft picks: RHP Zach Bryant (15th round - Jacksonville), RHP Johzan Oquendo (16th round - Leadership Christian Academy - Guaynabo, PR), and RHP Shane Combs (31st round - Notre Dame).

So the Cubs have now signed 24 of their 40 draft picks.
