Angels Edge Cubs at Riverview Park

LHP Hunter Green and four relievers combined to toss a seven hitter with eight strikeouts, as the Angels edged the Cubs 2-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training Opening Day action this afternoon on Field #6 at the Under Armour Performance Center at Riverview Park in Mesa, AZ.

Tyler Alamo flied out to the warning track in RF with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to end the game.  

LHP Jonah Weseley struck out five Cubs in just two innings of relief, and ex-Cub Trevor Gretzky played 1B for the Angels and went 1-3 with a double and a stolen base.    

Jae-Hoon Ha (post-2013 broken wrist) continued his EXST rehab, playing CF and going 1-3 with a line-drive rope single, a walk, a stolen base, and two fly outs to RF.

Folks, Castro's defense is really exciting to watch right now. He made a great play tonight already - probably the fastest I've ever seen him move. He really appears to have upped his intensity. Keep it up Starlin!

CUBSTER: Gleyber Torres is an exceptional defensive shortstop. He makes the routine plays consistently, and I mentioned in a comment a couple of days ago that he made a leaping catch sideways (leaping to his right) in the "sim" game on Monday, and you have to be fairly athletic to get elevation while leaping sideways... and he just turned 17 in December!

He is very confident and poised for his age, and he doesn't show emotion or get flustered when he makes a mistake.

Offensively he appears (at this point) to be a top of the order type (#1 or #2 hitter), although he will need to get on base at a high rate to stay there as he eventually moves up the pipeline to the higher levels (AA, AAA. and MLB). 

19-year old Kane County SS Carlos Penalver is a pretty good defender, too, so the Cubs have a couple of interesting teenaged shortstops in the system (although they are both probably several years away).

In the never ending drive to see a .500 team by the year of our Rush, 2112, it was good to see a few things yesterday. All of it was probably obvious to most of you, so I won't bother with most of it. And, it's awfully early. But I am beginning to wonder if Mueller is having an effect on Rizzo. JD mentioned Rizzo is attacking the ball early, then being more patient. That seems to be the case. My God, it's like the team has a hitting strategy. I tend to give coaches too much credit when things go good/well, so that's kind of a whatever. And again, I like Junior Lake more than most people who seem more knowledgeable than I am about baseball. That ball was crushed. He just seems to have some serious mojo. He came up pretty fast through the system, so I'm not surprised he screws up once in awhile. But I like that kid.

Well was some bad baserunning by Castro in this game and the blocking the plate rule is dumb but it's nice to see the Cubs actually get the bouncing ball hits go there way, especially for Rizzo. Last year it seemed like all his hard hit balls went to defenders.

they have the highlight on Gameday, he was waived in for sure and with 2 outs, usually wise to take that chance. The highlight cuts off before going to any close-ups, did they actually call hime safe or safe because of blocking the plate? If blocking the plate, that's an unfortunate interpretation of it. The ball did arrive early and he sort of drops down in front of the plate I guess, but man, not like he had a lot of time to think about it, seemed pretty natural.

if it was a no tag call I think Hurdle would have been allowed to challenge it. In the end, Castro was safe anyway because Sanchez had the ball in his bare hand and Castro slid into his glove and pushed it back and touched the plate as the actual ball was tagging him, so ultimately it didn't matter. I really don't know what else Sanchez is suppose to do on that play...straddle the plate I guess to try and catch the ball?

i hope this is the last time we see kalish hitting 2nd. sure, he had a good spring, but he did a chunk of his work in later innings vs minor leaguers. plus, having 3 lefties in a row is getting stupid...such as this inning where it's kalish/rizzo/sureholds coming up 1/2/3.

Their record could be quite a bit better. I think they're playing ok baseball overall. I only heard part of the last few innings as I was driving (yay smartphones). Castro got hits again, I don't know how Rizzo did. Did Valbuena bat for Olt? And why Olt? When Barney was nearing the plate? I realize he walked but dear God. If it wasn't Olt, then why whoever it was instead of Barney?

valbuena batted for the pitcher who's slot was used in a double switch moving olt out in the 7th (with PIT at the plate) moving boni to 3rd and inserting d.barney at 2nd. along with telling everyone to steal bases and weird bunting...renteria loves to move boni all over the place making substitutions.

ok, good. Thanks for that info. I had the game on in the car and I could only hear Len and JD and I thought I heard Len ask if it was a good move pinch hitting Valbuena. Maybe he just was wondering if there wasn't somebody else on the bench, or maybe there was just too much traffic making too much noise and I didn't hear right.

Yes we all knew we weren't going to compete in 2014 so you can whine and complain about it constantly as you do or look for things to actually like and enjoy such as seeing the players that are actually part of our future doing well and rooting for them to succeed. I find the second way much more rewarding and enjoyable. You seem to prefer the 1st way.

I'm seeing a lot of good things from the hitters. Even Barney took ball four instead of hacking at 3-2, as one of the announcers pointed out that he did last year. They're working the count nicely. I blame Bill Mueller. It's gotta be tough to see the relievers trash these good efforts.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
