Cubs & Giants Play Even Par at Indian School Park

Jeffrey Baez led-off the game with a home run and then laced an RBI single and stole a base in his next AB, Jesse Hodges belted an RBI triple and scored a run, Gleyber Torres singled twice, knocked-in two runs, and scored another, and Tyler Ihrig fired four innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts and combined with three relievers to help the Cubs whitewash the Giants 6-0 on Field #2, and Craig Massoni drove-in three runs with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly and Carlos Valdez hammered a solo home run, leading the Giants to a 6-1 victory on Field #1, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader action this morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Slick-fielding AA Tennessee shortstop Elliot Soto (at Extended Spring Training while serving a 50-game Drug of Abuse suspension) reached base four times (three singles and a walk) and stole a base in a losing cause on Field #1.

OF Casper Wells (on AAA Iowa Cubs 7-day DL - back spasms) continued his EXST rehab, playing RF for six innings and getting three Plate Appearances (he was in the clean-up slot in the batting order on Field #2 and he batted only when his spot in the order was due to hit). Wells walked twice and grounded out 6-3.

the kids play tonight...olt, lake, kalish. valbuena at 2nd (not a kid, but i like him there over d.barney). however this group is mixed/matched, this is a lineup i'd like to see more of...at least for the foreseeable future. Emilio Bonifacio CF Ryan Kalish RF Anthony Rizzo 1B Starlin Castro SS Luis Valbuena 2B Welington Castillo C Mike Olt 3B Junior Lake LF

Oltimate needs to be batting higher

he may only be a rookie, but he needs to man up and give the manager an oltimatum. also, the rain delay is over.

...and another no decision for ninja...yow. he threw 69 pitches and sat through a 1 hour rain delay. 0-0, going into the bottom 7th.

...and 4 batters pitched to by b.shitter later, the braves lead by 1. ...hey look, a squeeze play...make that 2 runs.

Ninja looks pissed - all the time!

...and the cubs move into dead last in the NL (2nd to last in all of MLB)... 12-23

Between the prospect we get for Ninja, the 4th pick in the draft, and next year's first or second pick, the system's going to get even better before these guys start graduating. #TheCubsWay

So MLB has changed the rules again. Instead of going from 30 to 28 to 26 players this year, teams will only go from 30 to 28 this Thursday and stay at 28 through the post-season.

Thinking about the Cubs potential moves, I would imagine that Jose Quintana and Brad Weick will be added at some point before the post-season and Rex Brothers, Colin Rea, Justin Steele, and one of Josh Phegley or Daniel Winkler would be sent down to South Bend (or released).

jeffress used in the 8th...easy one for him.  looks like kimbrell is still the 9th inning guy.

he's done nothing extordinary out there, but he's looked a lot more comfortable out there this year.

he was especially bad at anything near the line the last few seasons, not making the play or getting over there so late somewhat ordinary popouts looked like great effort.  small sample size and all, but it looks like he has a bit more of a clue.  if he can be at least average-ish out there, his arm gives him a nice plus on top of it.

Anyone else think Souza isn't any better than Almora?

Should Souza's PAs go to Almora?

Schwarbs looks more comfortable defensively in left field than Souza

Ideally would prefer Hendricks not pitch right after Mills given their similar profiles

Nick Castellanos with HR number 6 tonight against the Indians.  He's just killing it to start the season

i haven't heard anything beyond speculation.  i don't even know if it was even addressed in the mlbpa/owners agreement, but i imagine it is in some way.

Has there been any indication on how much effort will be made to make up the games lost to a team Covid shutdown?
