Cubs & Giants Play Even Par at Indian School Park

Jeffrey Baez led-off the game with a home run and then laced an RBI single and stole a base in his next AB, Jesse Hodges belted an RBI triple and scored a run, Gleyber Torres singled twice, knocked-in two runs, and scored another, and Tyler Ihrig fired four innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts and combined with three relievers to help the Cubs whitewash the Giants 6-0 on Field #2, and Craig Massoni drove-in three runs with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly and Carlos Valdez hammered a solo home run, leading the Giants to a 6-1 victory on Field #1, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader action this morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Slick-fielding AA Tennessee shortstop Elliot Soto (at Extended Spring Training while serving a 50-game Drug of Abuse suspension) reached base four times (three singles and a walk) and stole a base in a losing cause on Field #1.

OF Casper Wells (on AAA Iowa Cubs 7-day DL - back spasms) continued his EXST rehab, playing RF for six innings and getting three Plate Appearances (he was in the clean-up slot in the batting order on Field #2 and he batted only when his spot in the order was due to hit). Wells walked twice and grounded out 6-3.

the kids play tonight...olt, lake, kalish. valbuena at 2nd (not a kid, but i like him there over d.barney). however this group is mixed/matched, this is a lineup i'd like to see more of...at least for the foreseeable future. Emilio Bonifacio CF Ryan Kalish RF Anthony Rizzo 1B Starlin Castro SS Luis Valbuena 2B Welington Castillo C Mike Olt 3B Junior Lake LF

Oltimate needs to be batting higher

he may only be a rookie, but he needs to man up and give the manager an oltimatum. also, the rain delay is over.

...and another no decision for ninja...yow. he threw 69 pitches and sat through a 1 hour rain delay. 0-0, going into the bottom 7th.

...and 4 batters pitched to by b.shitter later, the braves lead by 1. ...hey look, a squeeze play...make that 2 runs.

Ninja looks pissed - all the time!

...and the cubs move into dead last in the NL (2nd to last in all of MLB)... 12-23

Between the prospect we get for Ninja, the 4th pick in the draft, and next year's first or second pick, the system's going to get even better before these guys start graduating. #TheCubsWay

Welp. I guess I will continue to pay attention to the Wild Card race? Dropping the Michael Wacha game is bad.

6 innings, 5 pitchers used...and the cubs are down by 1 to show for it.

I hate Tommy Edman, and those of his ilk. The pissbirds are masters of getting a few good years out of middling prospect types like him. DeJong, Jon Jay, Matt Adams, Tommy Pham, Allen Craig, Matt Carpenter... the list goes on and on.

Trades involving players on minor league reserve lists are prohibited beginning at 12 PM (Eastern) on the 7th day prior to the originally-scheduled conclusion of the MLB regular season through the last day of the MLB regular season (including a day in which a Game #163 and Game #164 tie-breaker game is played or a day in which a re-scheduled game is played after the originally-scheduled conclusion of the MLB regular season).

If he makes four more appearances prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season, David Phelps' 2020 club option salary escalates from $3M to $5M (plus up to $3.25M in performance bonuses).

Conversely, Padres closer Kirby Yates has allowed only two HR with a .184 OppBA and 13/100 BB/K in 59.2 IP and  Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez (now on Restricted List) has allowed just five HR with a .197 OppBA and 13/90 BB/K in 60.0 IP.

Seems like the rotation is just too old, especially with a bullpen this flimsy backing them up.

I’ve been thinking on this. And there have been so many crushing defeats it seems. And not a whole lot of really uplifting wins. I think it’s a factor of this team doesn’t come from behind a lot (winning last night would have been an amazing win) and seems to blow late leads or allow this type of loss. Last night was more evidence that this team just can’t finish anything.

cubs are out of a playoff slot (1st place or wild card slot) for the 1st time since april.

crushing defeat after a hell of a 9th inning comeback.
