Bryant & Lopez Go Deep and Arrieta & Wada Look Sharp at Riverview Park

Kris Bryant slugged a solo home run over the CF fence, lined an RBI single, walked twice, and scored three runs, Rafael Lopez belted a three-run HR and collected another RBI on a bases loaded walk, Addison Russell hammered an RBI triple, walked, and scored two runs, and Miguel Montero ripped two RBI singles and scored a run, as the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) lambasted the Sacramento RiverCats (San Francisco Giants AAA affiliate) 14-4 on Field #6, and Ryan Dent and Cael Brockmeyer drilled back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the 2nd as the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants AA affiliate) played to a 2-2 tie on Field #5, in Cactus League minor league game action this afternoon at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park.

Ex-Cubs Ronny Cedeno and Brett Jackson each doubled and scored a run for Sacramento.

With the Chicago Cubs idle, Jake Arrieta got his scheduled work in with Iowa in the AAA game, throwing five innings (58 pitches - 43 strikes) and allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits (four singles and a double) and no walks (but two WP), with six strikeouts (including five in a row at one point - the first four swinging), and a 4/4 GO/FO.

LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (groin & hamstring rehab) got the start for Tennessee in the AA game and threw 3.1 IP of shutout ball (47 pitches - 30 strikes), allowing two hits (a single and a double) and no walks, with four strikeouts, and a 2/4 GO/FO.

Completely unrelated to everything, but I had an epiphany of sorts tonight, well, an epiphanet, really. With the promise of improved relations with Cuba, and hopefully soon some commercial trade with our neighbors to the south, I would like to propose something. Ladies and gentleman, your Havana White Sox!!!

The Cubs have released LHP Austin Kirk and INF Tanner Witt from Minor League Camp.

Kirk was the Cubs 3rd round pick ($320K signing bonus) in the 2009 draft out of Owasso HS - Owasso, OK. He threw a nine-inning no-hitter for Peoria on the 4th of July 2011, and he was the starting pitcher for the North squad in the Florida State League All-Star Game in 2012. But he was unable to establish himself beyond "A" ball, and by 2014 had morphed into a secondary lefty reliever at AA Tennessee. Kirk was eligible to be a minor league 6YFA after the 2015 season, so he probably had no long-term future with the Cubs even if he hadn't been released at this time.

Witt was acquired from the Rockford Aviators (Frontier League) prior to the start of Spring Training. He was Frontier League Rookie of the Year in 2014 after playing four seasons at Kansas State. He attended Lake Zurich HS.

I always had hope for Zych as a hard thrower. He just seemed to be very hittable when it came to results. Reminded me of Kyle Farnsworth lite (without the fan kicking incident).

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
