Touki & Company Easily Handle Cubs at Riverview

Diamondbacks starting pitchers Touki Toussaint (Arizona 2014 1st round draft pick) and Carlos Hernandez combined to toss six innings of two-hit shutout ball, Gerard Hernandez drove-in three runs with an RBI double, a solo HR, and an RBI GO, and Ismael Pena clubbed a triple and a single, helping the D'backs sweep a Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader played this morning at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park. 

The Diamondbacks won the game played on Field #1 by a score of 4-2, and they won the game played on Field #2 by a score of 9-2.  

Kevonte Mitchell singled twice, walked, stole two bases, and scored a run, and Ricardo Marcano ripped a two-run triple for the Cubs in a losing cause on Field #1, and RHP Hector Perez was rocked to the tune of seven runs on eight hits (including five doubles) and a walk in just 1.2 IP on Field #2.  

In EXST Cubs roster news, catcher Taylor Teagarden (was on Iowa Cubs 7-day DL with right shoulder inflammation) has completed his Extended Spring Training rehab and has rejoined the I-Cubs. 

In addition, RHRP David Garner (Cubs 2013 7th round draft pick - Michigan State) was moved-up to Lo-A South Bend after the game. Although he struggled a bit with his control today, Garner struck out the side 1-2-3 last Wednesday versus the Rockies and likewise in an intrasquad game before that, and was clearly throwing the best among the more-experienced pitchers left behind at Extended Spring Training.  

With Garner gone, I would think Michael Wagner (who had a strong two-inning outing today) will probably be the next EXST Cubs RHRP to move-up to a full-season affiliate. Prior to getting drafted and signing with the Cubs in 2013 (he was the Cubs 15th round pick that year) , Wagner was the closer at the University of San Diego, and was a college teammate of Kris Bryant.

I know you had a tough day getting the stats for both games in those fields. I saw you out there in the bushes. I give you credit Phil! Thank you. I stayed for about three innings but there wasn't any shade on that field.

g.balfour DFA'd by TB...they owe him 7m this year. his fastball velocity dipped to barely touching 90, but he was having a somewhat effective season until his 3-run screwup today. he's still got his slider. *shrug*

i'm more concerned about the leads. it's not just 1st, it's 2nd and 3rd. if there's little to no threat, there's no reason not to take an extra 4+ft lead even if you're not speedy as long as you get back to the bag quickly if the ball isn't put into play. extra ft for leads happens almost all the time, steals not so much (but still too much this early, imo).

The problem with Ross catching Lester in the NL is that it puts 2 automatic outs (literally, in Lester's case) in the lineup.. I wonder if the AL guys Theo and Maddon thought of that.

he probably just wanted to clean up his own mess. he got another hitter after he put 2 on and got him out...he might have thought that would buy him more time. they let him go after middlebrooks (righty) and took him out for gyorko (righty), but gyorko had success vs him in the game. slow starts aren't anything new for lester, but he's gotta be ready for some success already.

I would agree that yes those positions underperformed what is expected from a MLB roster, but were pretty much in line with the expectations of the players the Cubs were playing. The only real disappointment so far to me is Alcantara. Big picture, Olt/La Stella/Alcantara/Herrara have not been good MLB players before this season and they continued that trend into the small sample size of this season. Even if they regress back up to their historical mean, it was a pretty low mean to start with.

I would put Lester in the underperforming bucket (although not "wildly"), and agree that there must be something more to get out of 2B. Mendy may not be an All-Star, but he's not a .100 hitter, either (hopefully). But, I agree with the point above -- no key player is off to a horrible start. Anybody hear anything on Javy? I guess it's nice that the team seems to be respecting his privacy.

Small sample size obviously, but was interesting to hear during yesterday's game that the Cubs led the NL (maybe MLB, I guess I wasn't paying that close of attention after all) in SBs, pitches per at-bat and OF assists.

I was surprised at how poorly the Pads played defense. I wish we would've made them pay more for those 5 errors they made in the series, but oh well.

It'd be cool if 1 of Alcantara, La Stella, or Baez were available and playing well enough to make me want to yell at Maddon for treating Herrera like his own personal scrappy journeyman. Looks like Russell has a non-zero chance of beating them all to the punch.

    I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

    I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

    Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH. 

    He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

    You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

    Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

    I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

    Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

    Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

    The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

    I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

    Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day. 

     

    That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

    That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
