Lew Wolff Knows Cubs CAN Go Home Again

Robero Caro (opposite-field line-drive RBI double into left-centerfield alley), Kevonte Mitchell (two-out RBI single chopped over 3rd baseman's head and into LF), Bryant Flete (two-out RBI bloop double that fell between three defenders in short rightfield), Eloy Jimenez (two-out RBI ground single pulled through the 5.5 hole), and Tyler Alamo (two-out two-run double off CF "Batter's Eye") collected run-scoring hits in a seven-run top of the 7th, as the Cubs rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Athletics 8-6 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning on Field #4 at the Lew Wolff Training Center Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Jhonny Rodriguez drove-in three of the A's runs, with a two-run HR in the bottom of the 1st inning and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 3rd.

The Defensive Play of the Game was (once again) turned-in by speedy Cubs outfielder Roberto Caro, who made a spectacular sliding catch along the right-field line and into foul territory to end the bottom of the 7th inning.

This was the first visit by the Cubs Extended Spring Training contingent to their former minor league HQ at Fitch Park, which is now home to the A's minor leagues. The clubhouse and batting cages have been expanded (and look great), and new bullpens have been added to the four fields.

Here is the abridged box score from today's game (Cubs players only):

HAGSAG: Wladimir Galindo is a definite power prospect (he led the VSL in home runs last season) but he needs a LOT of work at 3B and he might have to eventually move to 1st base (he got lots of reps at 1st base at Instructs last fall in case he has to move there). I would say Eloy Jimenez and Galindo are the top two position player prospects at EXST right now, with Kevonte Mitchell, Tyler Alamo, and Carlos Sepulveda the next three on the list.

Roberto Caro is one of the most polished position players at Cubs EXST, and he would likely be a candidate to get moved up to a "full-season" affiliate if an outfielder is needed. Kevin Encarnacion would be another one, but he is still trying to learn to hit LH versus left-handed pitchers (not an easy transition) since he is unable to switch-hit because of the shoulder injury and third-degree burns suffered in that horrific car crash post-2013.

Tim Saunders and Bryant Flete are the most-polished infielders at EXST, but Saunders is really here more on a rehab assignment (he retired last June, then decided to return to baseball this season). Flete is a very good all-around player with a plus-arm, and I think he would have no trouble whatsoever at South Bend, if the Cubs decide to move him up there at some point.

Jordan Hankins has been the best hitter at Cubs EXST so far. He has shown plus-HR power, but he's at Extended to learn to be a catcher (continuing the conversion that was started at Instructs in 2013 but then was put on the back-burner last season). Hankins works hard but I'm not sure if he will remain a catcher, or just add that to his tool-kit as he becomes more of a LH-hitting multi-positional bat-first back-up guy at the higher levels.

Jae-Hoon Ha is a pitcher now? Wow, I remember him being our lone rep in the Futures game a few years back. A different world we live in as Cubs fans now! How does he look as a pitcher? And what about the guy we took from Houston in the minor league rule 5 draft, Ariel Ovando? Do you see any potential in him? I remember you saying he had a big arm especially for a lefty and a lot of scouts wanted to sign him as a pitcher when he signed with Houston as an IFA.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
