Grimm Day for Cubs at Riverview Park

Nick Jones (ex-LHP) belted a two-run home run and Jordan Johnson and four relievers combined to toss a four-hitter, helping the Giants defeat the Cubs 4-1 on Field #6, and Bryant Flete doubled, singled, and scored a run, and five Cub relievers combined to hurl five innings of perfect baseball, as the Cubs and Giants played to a 2-2 tie on Field #5, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training split squad doubleheader action this morning at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park.

The game on Field #5 was called after seven innings with the score tied, and the game on Field #6 was called after 7-1/2 innings.

Kevonte Mitchell tripled, singled, stole a base, and scored the lone Cub run on Field #6.

18-year old 6'6 RHP Austyn Willis (Cubs 2014 18th round draft pick - Barstow HS - Barstow, CA) got the start on Field #6 and threw three innings of one-hit shutout ball with four strikeouts, retiring Travis Ishikawa (on the Giants MLB 15-day DL with a lower back strain) three times (4-3 GO, K-swinging, and F-8 fly out). Willis has started three Cactus League EXST games, allowing one run on four hits (including a solo HR) and a walk with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. He will very likely be in the Eugene starting rotation when the Northwest League season commences next month.

RHRP Justin Grimm (on the Cubs MLB 15-day DL with a forearm strain retroactive to April 2nd) worked the top of the 4th inning on Field #6 and was dominating, striking out the side on 12 pitches. He looks to be in mid-season form.

The Giants are unusual because they have two ex-LHP at Extended Spring Training being converted to position players (usually it's the other way around). Besides 6'6 first-baseman Nick Jones (who belted a tape measure two-run HR over the RF fence that provided the winning margin for the Giants on Field #6 this morning), outfielder Steven Neff drilled three hits (a single, a double, and a triple) in a game against the Cubs earlier this week in Scottsdale.

Here is the abridged box score from today's games (Cubs players only):

Brewers look like the first ready to tank the season...

@BNightengale 55s56 seconds ago The #Brewers, 5-18, are letting teams know they will make their veterans available on trade market: Kyle Lohse, Matt Garza, Aramis Ramirez.

Broxton is about the only player I'd want from them.

They have so little of value to trade, so little in the farm system. And it costs $105M. If they literally liquidated the 25-man roster, I don't expect anyone except Lucroy would fetch much of incredible value. Gomez gets a decent prospect, a handful of other guys maybe a lottery ticket-type prospect. Braun is unmovable. I don't expect Milwaukee will be a threat in the standings for some time to come. Now hopefully the Cubs can take advantage and try to fatten our record against them.

Hi Phil, smooth trip back. Going thru withdrawal. Had so much fun there. Thank you for sharing your awesome knowledge. Will be following you on here every day. So much appreciate it. MT Bob.

Ryan Hanigan goes down for Red Sox.

presume Swihart is due up soon, but maybe some interest in Beefy I guess

@BruceMiles2112: #Cubs Saturday: Soler RF, Fowler CF, Rizzo 1B, Bryant 3B, Montero C, Castro SS, Denorfia LF, Arrieta P, Russell 2B

Soler batting lead off, omg, it's genius!!!

J/k...whatever, lucky he has a young team that isn't gonna complain

also Denorfia getting a start vs a righty. ~shrug~

rizzo vs russell...rizzo wins, we all lose. both look okay, but russell got rang in the head/neck on a dive/collision.

g.germen once again reminding cubs fans that james "don't call me a loogy" russell is doing really well in AAA.

ejax with another good inning today... 8ip 6h 1bb 7k - 0.00era 0.88whip looks like he may have a future in the pen. good for him. too bad it took cubs signing him for starting money and a couple years of total failure to figure it out.

Really looking forward to Boras and the MLB union argument about how Bryant was unreasonably held back this spring -- hey, he's got as many HRs as 0-for-lifetime Jon Lester in roughly the same number of career ABs. Sure, he strikes out a ton, and already has 3 errors playing 3B, but he does draw the occasional walk, which is nice. The "Zero HR" thing is no longer cute. You're hitting clean-up for the big club, Kris -- start hitting the damn ball over the fence.

    matt shaw (AA) has a .381/.552/.905 line through 7 games...3 homers and a triple.  6 games at 3rd, 1 game DH (5 PO, 7 A, 0 E).

    that's somewhat fun news.

i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
