Cubs @ Cardinals - Wood vs. Martinez; Game 24 Thread

It's a long season and one losing weekend against a bad team will not make or break it. Now, one awesome 4-game sweep of a good team will certainly improve our moods.

Let's do this!!

c.martinez is working the wrong side of the very edge of the strikezone and not getting any of the calls his way. it's not like he should or anything, but this zone is tight so far tonight.

rosscup up with bases loaded, 0 outs, and a 2 run lead to protect after strop shit the bed... this game is 3 hours old...it's the 7th inning.

Belisle and Carlos V. both have ERAs below 1.00 for the Cards. That just sucks. Cubs were winning games they should have lost a while ago; now they are doing the opposite. Somebody tell Starlin to stop trying to pull everything -- he is wearing out the SS on the other teams with ground balls.

Cubs should seriously consider moving Bryant to hit #2. Nobody is pitching to him, and I'd rather see him on base with Soler and Rizzo coming up than Montero (despite his recent hot streak) and Ground Ball Castro.

Most depressing loss of the year...and I now have a real bad feeling about the next 3. Can't do that against the Cardinals, Travis. You simply cannot.

That was a weird game for 50 reasons. I wouldn't read too much into it. The ump gave the Cubs huge advantage in the first inning squeezing Martinez bad. Hard hit balls for the Cubs right at people BABIP house of mirrors. They actually played pretty well. Strop wasn't horrible - couple pitches and ground balls a foot in the wrong direction. Cards are really getting good breaks right now. It won't last. That game was painful but it wasn't as bad as it seemed.

I am remembering back to early spring training when people were saying: "What are the Cubs going to do with all of these pitchers?  They have too many." and chuckling. It seems like these days you can bank on several being DLed at any given time and an equal number being completely ineffective.

I just remember we had Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Wood, Wada, Jackson, Turner, Doubront, Rondon, Strop, Ramirez, Grimm, Motte, Coke, Rosscup, Schlitter, Parker, Ortiz, Germen, Roach, Beeler, Jokisch, and Britton. You'd think with 24 guys you could find 11-12 that would be healthy and effective at the big league level.

As bad as that nightmare was, and it was very bad, it was good to see them work those at bats against Martinez. They had him in a boiling rage. I could nitpick about various things but most of it is all just stuff that happens during the course of a year and eventually straightens itself out. The real problem is that these guys aren't getting far with this bullpen. This is the same bullpen I was hopeful would make the Cubs unbeatable after 6. Of course, that was before injuries.

That game was boring as hell despite ending in a 1-run difference, and I agree with Carlito's BABIP hall of mirrors comment (late in the game--not in the first inning). One pleasant takeaway--Russell is batting over .200, hit a long homerun on a super quick, short swing, and now has his OPS in not-totally-embarrassing territory.

deno back to the DL...szczur expected to be called up (if he hasn't already). same hammy injury...3rd time since spring.

"Marlins released C Jarrod Saltalamacchia." no trade partner found. the C market has been unreal this winter/spring...aside from CHC/TOR scrambling to add catchers they didn't have a need for, none of the "buyers" in the trade market are willing to give up anything at all. guess it's time to see how much ARZ really does feel about their crappy C core...or if BOS will make a move...or TEX...or anyone...

reliever market is f'n crazy.  guys that aren't "lights out" but still good are getting crazy loot.  josh hader gonna get crazy paid if these early contracts are an indication of the market.

    emilio pagan - 2/16m (8m average)

    nick martinez - 2/26m (13m average)

    reynaldo lopez - 3/30m (10m average)

it also makes me wonder how much j.assad is worth as a trade piece in this market...or how valuable he is to the team to save money.  these swing guy types are going to start making good loot for relievers.  in 2023 there were 5 pitchers in all of MLB that pitched 200+ IP...8 in 2022...4 in 2021.  Pre-COVID you have to go back to the strike shortened 1994 to find less than 10 pitchers with sub-200 IP (Greg Maddux the only guy in 94).

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
