Eloy, Marcano, and Sands Offer the Snake-Bite Cure at Talking Stick

Eloy Jimenez reached base four times (two doubles, a single, and a walk) in four Plate Appearances and drove-in a run, Ricardo Marcano belted a triple and a two-run double and scored a run, and LHP Carson Sands hurled four innings of shutout ball, as the Cubs defeated the Diamondbacks 5-3 on Jackrabbit Field, and Raymel Flores drilled two triples and scored two runs, Sergio Alcantara ripped a two-run inside-the-park HR, and Wei-Chieh Huang and five relievers combined to retire 25 of the first 27 men they faced, leading the D'backs to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs on Whirlwind Field, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader action this morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Jose Paniagua singled twice, doubled, and scored a run for the Cubs in a losing cause on Whirlwind Field.

Recently signed free-agent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 1-3 with a single and a walk and a run scored in four PA and RHRP Matt Stites (on AZ MLB 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation) threw a shutout inning (one hit allowed, one strikeout) for the Diamondbacks squad on Whirlwind Field.  .

In EXST Cubs roster news, INF Tommy LaStella (on Cubs 15-day DL - rib cage inflammation) has completed the Extended Spring Training portion of his rehab and has moved up to AA Tennessee, where he will begin his Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment. In just two Cactus League EXST games (10 PA), LaStella had seven hits (including four doubles and a HR) and a sacrifice fly, and six RBI.

Also, INF Andrew Ely (Cubs 2014 32nd round draft pick - U. of Washington) has been moved-up to Lo-A South Bend, and INF Tim Saunders (Cubs 2012 32nd round draft pick - Marietta College) has been released.

The 22 year old Ely began the season on the Hi-A Myrtle Beach roster, but he did not play for the Pelicans and was assigned to Extended Spring Training last month. In six Cactus League EXST games (21 PA), Ely hit 312/476/375, with a double, four walks, an HBP, two strikeouts, a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI. He played both 2B and 3B while he was in Arizona.

The left-handed hitting Ely had a fine debut professional season in 2014, hitting 298/348/479 with five HR & 16 RBI in 34 games combined between AZL Cubs and AAA Iowa.

The speedy Saunders (48 SB in 148 career minor league games) was a two-time NCAA Division 3 All American in college and the 2012 NCAA D-3 Player of the Year, but yet he seemingly came out of nowhere to hit 381/431/536 between AZL Cubs, Peoria, and Daytona (combined 49 games - 218 PA) after being drafted in 2012. But then he suffered an elbow injury at Daytona in 2013 that required a UCL transplant (Tommy John surgery), and he was unable to regain the 2012 mojo once he returned to action.

The 24-year old Saunders retired last June, but decided to try it again this season. He reported to Minor League Camp in March, but was left behind at Extended Spring Training. He still shows plus-speed on the bases and versatility and range in the field, and he still has a good eye at the plate, but he hit only 154/313/231 in eleven Cactus League EXST games (32 PA), with four walks and two HBP, six strikeouts, three stolen bases (one CS), five runs scored, and two RBI. He played 2B, 3B, and SS in Cactus League EXST games and intrasquad games while he was at EXST, and he has also played the outfield earlier in his career. He should be able to find a spot with an indepenedent league team if he wants to continue playing.

It wasn't a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game, but the Cubs did play an EXST intrasquad game on Field #6 at Riverview Park yesterday afternoon.

Veteran MLB RHP Felipe Paulino was one of the starting pitchers in the intrasquad game, and he worked 3.1 IP and got his pitch count up to 63, so he may ready to join AAA Iowa sooner rather than later. He did allow three runs on four hits (two singles, a triple and a solo HR) and two walks, but he also struck out six (all six swinging). His fastball was consistently 94-95 MPH, and touched 96 at least once, so apparently there is nothing wrong with his arm (Paulino missed most of the 2014 season with a sore shoulder, and he had TJS in 2012).

Tyler Alamo slugged a solo home run (that was the one HR allowed by F. Paulino), Yohan Matos, Carlos Jimenez, and Jose Paniagua belted triples, and LHP Jose Paulino tossed four innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts (and a 6/0 GO/FO) in the intrasquad game. (J. Paulino is a virtual-lock to join Carson Sands, Justin Steele, and Austyn Willis in the Eugene starting rotation, when the Northwest League begins play next month).

RHP Dillon Maples had another poor outing. Working in relief of J. Paulino in the intrasquad game, Maples allowed five runs on five hits (including two triples and a double) and two walks in just one inning of work. This is the fourth consecutive Extended Spring Training for the now 23-year old Maples (he was drafted out of a North Carolina HS in 2011, but did not sign until August of that year), and while he still throws a 94 MPH heater and a hammer curve, he has a lot of difficulty commanding his pitches. He also sometimes will lose confidence in his fastball if he's not getting good results with it, and when that happens he tends to lose focus.

Here are the abridged box scores from today's two Cubs Cactus League EXST games (Cubs players only), followed by the abridged box score from yesterday's intrasquad game at Riverview Park:

Any idea why Ely instead of Eloy to Lo-A? Felipe Paulino, really? The velocity sounds good, but were they hitting it hard? It sounds like the command was off, too. How did he look overall?

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

JOHN B: Andrew Ely was assigned to South Bend because they needed an infielder to replace 2B Chesny Young, who was moved-up to Myrtle Beach. It was between Ely and Bryant Flete, and Ely got the call, probably because he is older, has D-1 college experience, and spent some time at AAA last season.

Felipe Paulino's velocity (94-96) is good but his fastball is straight and hittable. (Tyler Alamo cranked his HR over the left-centerfield fence and Yohan Matos mashed a triple on a fastball). His breaking ball and change-up are OK, but nothing special, although he did get a lot of swings & misses (six swinging strikeouts, including Eloy Jimenez twice) between the hits.

I see Paulino as a rotation filler at AAA, probably nothing more than that.

Smokies smokin'... 9-4 win over the Biscuits (12 hits) Almora 2-4 (double, triple, walk), Schwarber 3-4 (double, HR, walk), Vogelbach 2-3 (doubles x2, walks x2), McKinney 1-5 (double) and the MB Pelicans had 15 hits in a 7-1 win including Zagunis 3-5 and Underwood with 5 shutout innings, no BB, 3K, 4H.

one last thing... Javier Baez after striking out in the first, went 3-4 (3 singles) with 2 rbi. He's now hitting .311 .311 .382 .443 .825 (61 AB) per John Arguello at Cubs Den:
After striking out he squared up on a line drive single to LF and then later when the opposite way for a single to RF. He also showed his good baserunning skills, beating out an infield grounder and stealing 2 bases to give him 5 on the year.
6th inning: Javier Baez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Kent Matthes. John Andreoli scores. Arismendy Alcantara scores (during that inning, Baez then steals 2nd and 3rd). From Tommy Birch (Des Moines Register) on twitter: Baez: "I think I found my swing. Well, I don't think, I know I found my swing." Last time Baez felt this good at the plate: "When I was in double-A. I haven't felt like this since I've been here." https://twitter.com/TommyBirch/status/599424090504613888 https://twitter.com/TommyBirch/status/599424565450842112 From the Sound of Music...How do you solve a problem like Maria? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1HwVmY28Pk

on Bruce Levine's radio show this am, he hinted at some pitching roster changes coming soon. Given the overuse of the pen, some fresh arms may be needed just because of that issue. Said Phil Coke is on a short leash (with Russell and Rosscup, he's the 3rd lefty in the pen) and Wada is ready. Also said it is no coincidence that Wada is pitching on same day schedule as Travis Wood. Hmmmm.

[ ]

In reply to by Cubster

Rosscup showed why he deserved Maddon's confidence yesterday but he still makes me nervous. But he really applied the tourniquet at exactly the right time there. Coke should probably be cut loose. Motte isn't getting anybody out either. I hope his leash is at least getting frayed around the edges a bit. It was good to hear the Great Maddonini say during his presser that, in his words, they're not going to the dance if the bullpen keeps going this way.

The Cubs played a six-inning Extended Spring Training intrasquad "sim" game at Riverview Park this morning, and Pierce Johnson threw to hitters for the first time since being shut-down the last week of Spring Training.

PITCHERS
Oscar de la Cruz: three innings (60 pitches)
Justin Steele: three innings (60 pitches)
Andin Diaz: two innings (40 pitches)
Pierce Johnson: two innings (30 pitches)
Scott Frazier: one inning (25 pitches)
Jae-Hoon Ha: one inning (20 pitches)

It appears that de la Cruz is the front-runner for the 5th starter slot at Eugene (joing Justin Steele, Carson Sands, Austyn Willis, and Jose Paulino). The 6'6 20-year old de la Cruz features a 94 MPH fastball, a curve, and a change-up, and he is probably the most-improve pitcher at EXST (he made his U. S. debut at Instructs last year).

I hate Joe. Sahadev Sharma @sahadevsharma · Maddon on sending Szczur down and recalling Schlitter: We had to thicken up the pen and there were just no other options. Okay, this is better. Sahadev Sharma @sahadevsharma · Maddon said lot of different options for immediate future, but Schlitter was just the move for *today* and then they'll figure out tomorrow.

In reply to by QuietMan

Jokisch and Germen are eating up 40-man spots that they aren't earning right now, so that would be a start. Britton and Cooper are not long-term solutions, but they've both pitched well enough to qualify as emergency help at this point. I also expect Wood to go to the pen when Wada gets activated.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

jokisch is kept around because he's a lefty that's effective vs righties and lefties because of his pitch mix who has decent control...and not prone to the long ball. if he ever figures it out he could be a solid middle/end rotation guy. that said, i think the cubs have more faith in that chance than the fans...myself included. he's a guy that some team most likely has 40-man roster space for, though.

it seems j.lester also sucks at bunting...that one's a little more excusable given his extended time in the AL. i kinda wondered why 0-infinity lester was allowed to swing so much in earlier games.

JD is commenting on how Russell should just keep running to first on that play but it looks like Russell was losing his balance anyway, and the best thing was just to keep the momentum of his fall going towards first.

warm weather + weekend + winning = packed house. 38K announced...and it looks it.

Uh-oh...it looks like the league has figured it out -- if you pitch to both Ross AND Lester, you get 2 automatic outs instead of just one.

shitter is warming up in the pen by himself with a 1 run cubs lead in progress, 2 men on, and 2 outs...alright then. phew...lester pitches through it...110 pitches

i would give rizzo...like...$5 to not use marky mark and the funky bunch for walkup music. if anyone knows if he wants in on this, tell him to hit me up for his payday.

A bit confused on why, with Denofria hurt on and off the whole season, why they recall Schlit-head - who can not get anyone out - and send down Ceasar? Is Maddon just telling Theo, "You want me to show you he sucks - AGAIN??"

Win by three v. an intra-division ace without benefit of any run-scoring hits? An ace we had never beaten?

In reply to by Newport

Bryant has done a pretty good job of quashing the "can't field third base" mantra. In fact, I'm seeing the opposite. Has pretty good range, makes some nice stabs out there, and a really good arm. The whole air mailing the ball to Rizzo thing he started the year with has even subsided. I think they'll leave Baez in Iowa for awhile to see if his new habits stick, but then they need to figure out where to put him. There's no room at the infield. You would think left field would be a piece of cake for someone with his baseball instincts.

Before the game, I was thinking to myself how crazy it was to have a 9-man bullpen. Turns out, they were actually playing with a 10-man bullpen today. It's like the damn playoffs already.

Turns out, they were actually playing with a 10-man bullpen today. --- Does Schlitter count? Really?

[ ]

In reply to by Charlie

I think it probably goes like this: Cubs brass to Iowa guys: "Is he keeping his sinker down?" Iowa guys: "Yes." Cubs brass to Maddon: "It's safe to use him, he's keeping his sinker down." Maddon: "My relievers are all tired. I'll try him again." Schlitter: "Watch this! See? I can throw my sinker chest high!!!"

[ ]

In reply to by jacos

he sent 2 guys to surgery under his tenure...both relievers...neither with pitch count concerns...before he got to take the blame for m.prior (and k.wood for some reason even with his prior injuries). meanwhile, MLB on whole is sending record numbers of kids to surgery since teams adjusted to the new babying of pitchers method of player use management. go figure. maybe it's a bit more complicated than throwing 5-10 extra pitches a game or 2 games in a row of heavy work. kids are dropping like flies, both starters and pen guys. it's not as cut/dry as it seems, especially since things are moving (more like tumbling fast) in the opposite direction with extra care.

Gameday says the wind is blowing out to LF at 20 mph. Is that for real? Also, I haven't had much to complain about as lineups go this year, but getting tired of Castro fourth and Soler sixth. Flip em please.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

  • crunch (view)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!
