Rosscup Sharp at Papago Park

Rudy Martin singled, doubled, and walked, and scored two runs, and Luke Willis singled twice, scored a run, and drove-in another with a sacrifice fly, lifting the AZL Royals to a 5-3 victory over the AZL Cubs in Arizona League action Wednesday night at Papago Park Sports Complex Field #2 in Phoenix, AZ.

Although they remain in the AZL West Division, the AZL Royals are playing their home games on the east-side of town at the Papago Park Sports Complex (the former home of the AZL Athletics) this season while their clubhouse is being renovated (expanded) at Surprise Stadium. (The Royals presently are in first place in the AZL West Division, and in fact they have the best record in the league). 
 
LHP Zac Rosscup (on Cubs MLB 15-day DL - left shoulder inflammation) saw his first game action since June 16th, getting the start for the AZL Cubs and throwing one inning (17 pitches - 11 strikes) and allowing no hits, no runs, and no walks, with two strikeouts (both swinging). One runner reached base on an E-5. Rosscup was working his fastball at 91-93 MPH and touched 94, and his breaking ball was sharp and unhittable. He looked to be in mid-season form. (Lots of swings & misses). 

Shawon Dunston Jr (on Myrtle Beach 7-day DL) continued his AZL rehab, serving as the AZL Cubs DH and batting third in the order. He drilled a one-out line-drive single to center in the top of the 1st inning, before leaving the game for a pinch-hitter in the top of the 3rd.

RHP Casey Bloomquist (Cubs 2015 17th round draft pick - Cal Poly SLO) made his pro debut, working the eighth inning and retiring the side 1-2-3 (a 5-3 GO followed by two strikeouts). Bloomquist displayed an 87-88 MPH fastball with sinking action that he mixed with a slider and a change-up that dive-bombed out of the strike zone. Bloomquist was the Mustang's "Friday night starter" (#1 starter) as a junior, and unlike some of the Cubs 2015 draft picks who were college seniors with no eligibility left (and no leverage in negotiations), Bloomquist had the option to return to school for his senior year at Cal Poly if he had not signed with the Cubs.  

The defensive Play of the Game was turned in by AZL Cubs RF Michael Foster (Cuhs 2015 16th round draft pick - Northeastern University), who made a spectacular diving catch in right-centerfield in the bottom of the 6th inning. Foster also singled twice and scored a run for the AZL Cubs in a losing cause.

AZ Phil, can you give us a scouting report on Pedro Silverio? he seems to be doing well. Also, is Dunston Jr. still dealing with a shoulder problem?

HAGSAG: Pedro Silverio has a thick lower-body and the stamina needed to be a starter. He was throwing an 89-91 MPH fastball that touched 92, a plus-curve, and a below-average change-up last night. The curve is his definitely his best pitch. He gets swings & misses with the curve. And Silverio's fastball looks a couple of clicks faster when hitters sit on the curve. The change-up is a work-in-progress. Silverio has almost the exact same body-type and stuff (low 90's fastball, plus-curve, nascent change-up) as newly-minted RHP (ex-C) Mark Malave, except Malave wears-down after about 30-40 pitches, while Silverio maintains his stuff up to & beyond 70-75 pitches. 

As far as I know, Dunston is still having shoulder issues, and that's why he went back on the MB DL and why he was sent back to Mesa (where he can participate in the UAPC arm-strengthening program). He can hit.OK. He just has problems throwing.

Javy Baez broke his ring finger on June 6th. Supposedly it was non-displaced and didn't need surgical fixation. This Saturday will be 6 weeks. Depending on the fracture location and pattern the usual estimate is 4-6 weeks out of action. He should be really soon that he's back in games so expect some updates from AZ Phil on when he gets into games in Arizona.

Whoooo! Mike Olt!: .200/.262/.367 in AAA Maybe he could stay at O&B's place if he ever gets called up again this year? I hope he is learning LF a little bit, anyway to increase his options.

Unfortunately, there is no longer any room at the inn for Olt. Not with the likes of McKinney, Torres, and even Willie Contreras, among others, milling about the Cubs system. My interest in Olt was limited mostly to last year, when he still had some possible relevance. I was hoping he'd get some playing time to see if he was worth giving playing time to. Now, there's no room for him at all, anywhere, because left field will probably be manned by Schwarber when he's not catching, and my gut feeling is that the TheoPlan is about 30% catching time for him. There really is no place for a guy who hasn't put up awesome numbers in AAA. I loved his potential, but that was last year, when the Cubs had room to experiment. Cult of Olt

You never know the plan of the great universe until time reveals all. We now know the prophet olt was a martyr of great renown. He sacrificed his hand and career so we could have Bryant (for an extra year). Oh the humility and humanity of Michael Moriarity Olt. He never complained when theo asked him to not have a broken hand for a few more days. For he shall be called Cub.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.
