Wednesday Funnies: Cardinals go splat

I know, it's like I'm 12 years old.
Don't really care, this is just so much fun.
Go Cubs.

ps: this gif has been repurposed from one I did in like 2010...STILL WORKS!

TIM!!! Awesome baby! You have brought your game up even more to Playoff Level.

Gents - You may know this already, but as of this AM, the Cubs are top MLB offense with a TOTAL .OPS of .823, slashing .237/.316/.506 Go Meelee! And, re the next opponent, the Mets are doing horribly against LH pitching, whereas the Dodgers have performed well. The Dodgers are somewhat the reverse with 38 K's against RH pitching in 4 Games.

So, do they give out an LDS MVP title? Because dat Soler. Wow. Lead the team in OPS, RBI, and R, and he nabbed the runner at the plate in the game yesterday to preserve the tie and end the inning. That was the Soler series.

Nice. Just needs some army planes shooting down at the splat and then Godzilla stomping on it.

I love your cartoons. They're a blast. I'm assuming the reason the bird went down is because he got hit by a Schwarber missile?

Cubs confirmed today that the ball on the video board was the Schwarber bomb. After examining it, they put it back up there, to remain until the current Cub run is over. There was also a guy in section 538--upper deck, right field corner--who took before-and-after snapshots of the board that confirm that the ball appeared there in the bottom of the seventh. (See under Sullivan in the Trib.) I preferred to believe the ball "slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God," but this is still cool.

If that's true, seems like one of two things going on: 1. Maddon is quite concerned abour Arrieta running out of gas and needs to get him one more day rest and is concerned Lester is sitting for too long between starts. 2. He is playing matchups and knows Dodgers and Mets can't use their #1 in game 1 and is confident Lester can hold his own against a #2. Either way, I don't like it at all. Tired Arrieta is more dependable than Lester on longer rest.

Not if the series goes 5 games. If all is healthy, pitch your clear #1 in game 1. Get the series lead, and then whether down 3-1 or 2-2, pitch your best in the pivotal game 5. With that said, I don't think all is equal. I think Cubs want to protect Arrieta a bit after his mechanics got out of whack on Monday. As for Lester it would either be 7 or 8 days rest, so don't buy the "regular rotation" story.

Here's the other positive aspect of Lester first: whoever pitches Saturday will face a lower tier of the other two team's staffs. In that situation I'd rather have Lester who is the 1a behind Arietta and save Arietta for game 2 where he is more likely to beat their ace than Lester.

I don't buy that argument, though I'm sure you are not alone, and you may even be right. My view is go for the kill in game #1. Get your best pitcher out there, win that game, and then roll the dice in game #2. Lose game 1 and the Cubs could be down 3-0 in a the blink of an eye. With that said, Maddon is clearly worried about Arrieta and probably rightfully so. This gives Arrieta an extra day of rest twice in a row, while Lester has had a ton of rest the last two weeks.

Fun fact- Just yesterday, Schwarber was listed on the Cubs roster on the website under "catchers". Today he is listed under "outfield". Shrug.

NLDS winner locker room shirt...good color, great use of Wrigley in the design, stupid, stupid, wording ruins it all. "Chicago wants it more" blech.

Yes, of course...didn't mean to imply otherwise. I just think the whole MLB tag line crap is dumb. what's wrong with "Cubs, 2015 NLDS winners" while not these goofy headlines, it has been like this for awhile where the products are about selling MLB postseason and not the team. My 2007 Division winning hat has "2007 CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPION" in big writing and a tiny Cubs "C" following. Don't understand that at all.

Something weird/controversial happening in the Rangers/Jays game. Tuned in on the radio partway through, but sounds like a run scored on what might have been TX player interference. Jays proceeding under protest.

it wasnt interference...they checked with an ump conference and then with the video replay crew to make sure it was right. the delay was very long...much trash was thrown onto the field. basically, russell was throwing the ball back to the pitcher and threw it into choo's bat...runner on 3rd scored...tie game no more in the top 7th with 2 outs. if it ends like this for TOR...ow.

this is little league level D in the bottom 7th. i think the blacksox were the last team to play this badly in a postseason game.

MY GAWD...3 RUN HR. a 1-man TOR fail followed by a collective collapse by TEX.

MLB AT Bat: "Josh Donaldson pops into a force out, second baseman Rougned Odor to shortstop Andrus, run scores" Huh?

it was a popout that should have been caught...it wasn't caught. seriously, this 1/2 inning has been full of some of the worst D i've ever seen...all in a row. this ranks up there with the "bob brenley at 3rd" game level of suck.

I assume Toronto is going bonkers right now? Russel Martin is a very, very, happy man right now.

Lots of pain in the ALDS so far: Texas up 2 games, heading home, lose 2 at home, then make 3 straight errors to lose the series, and have to watch Bautista act like an absolute douche while beating them. And the Astros blow a 4-run lead at home in the 8th inning of Game 4, while leading the series 2-1. Ouch, and double ouch. Lot of pain in the ALDS this year.

The catcher error that scored the Texas run was sketchy. Just saw the replay and the Texas batter sticks his bat right in front of home plate before the ball was thrown. Very sketchy, not sure that was the right call.

    matt shaw (AA) has a .381/.552/.905 line through 7 games...3 homers and a triple.  6 games at 3rd, 1 game DH (5 PO, 7 A, 0 E).

    that's somewhat fun news.

i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.

Best hitter: IL with oblique strain

Second best hitter: hasn’t looked the same since jamming his right hand during a swing

Third best hitter: playing through a sore hammy

Best pitcher: IL after one start

Second best RP: IL after 1.5 weeks
