Cubs Play Triple-Header Ball at Riverview Park

Dan Vogelbach drove-in five runs with a grand slam home run and a bases-loaded walk and Matt Murton doubled, walked twice, and scored two runs, leading the Iowa Cubs (the AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) to a 7-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds (Oakland Athletics AAA affiliate) on Field #6, Shawon Dunston Jr clubbed a two-run HR and Billy McKinney and Jacob Rogers singled and doubled, but it wasn't anywhere near enough as the Midland Rockhounds (A's AA affiliate) belted out 14 hits (including three triples, a double, and a home run) en route to a 9-4 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) on Field #5, and Gleyber Torres drilled a single and an RBI double, scored a run, and stole two bases, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) cruised to an 8-4 victory over the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) in Minor League Camp game action this afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The three games were played simultaneously.

As usual, several players were moved up to higher levels just for the day.

John Arguello from Cubs Den was at the game, and (as usual) he has some great pics & commentary posted over there

AZ Phil, how is it possible to watch three games at once and keep score on all the of them? Amazing!

A Resources tab...Woo hoo! This place has got everything. The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year...Pier 1 Imports...

WSux getting world wide attention. Supposedly the team almost voted to not play their game on Wednesday to protest. What's next? Probably someone saying that it was disgruntled White Sox players that caused the Trump Chicago rally to be cancelled.
Chris Sale absolutely lit up White Sox prez Kenny Williams over Adam LaRoche situation.

this is turning into a world-class shit show over a 1st baseman who's barely worth his pay...arguably not worth his pay... until this point my major thought on the issue was, "hey, at the least no one will be pissed with the kid because most fans are probably happy to see him not getting 600+PA in 2016."

[ ]

In reply to by crunch

I agree with Williams' position, but this should have been handled in the off-season. Terrible timing. EDIT: On second thought, the timing on this is really inexplicable and inexcusable. Something must have happened to force Kenny's hand. Why else wait until halfway through spring training to tell LaRoche? If not, Kenny Williams just set the bar for terrible people management.

In reply to by billybucks

supposedly a few players came to Kenny and ask if the kid could be there "less". I am assuming new guys came to team this year, not the guys who underachieved last year. Also Williams asked to cut the time to "50%" and not a total ban, which is well in his right.

and other notes: Mike Olt signs a milb contract with Padres Ejax being EJax...Yoenis Cespedes left Thursday's game against the Marlins after taking a pitch off his right hand. Edwin Jackson plunked Cespedes to lead off the fifth inning.

sweet...ESPN has their gun going for the game. lot of local/fox coverage doesn't bother this early in spring. also, the media-hyped "possible opening day lineup" didn't come to be. they got kawasaki playing 2nd, schwarber playing C making brainfart decisions (checked a runner at 1st while typing this...letting the runner leading off 2nd take 3rd), and soler's in LF.

lou maddon (lulz, i keep calling him lou...all white people look the same) in-game interview...he's hinting heavily towards hammel/schwarber being a "thing" that's going to happen this season. so far schwarb is doing a really cruddy job with catching his slider...lot of clank-and-drop. hopefully he'll get more work on that this spring, even if it's not hammel's slider.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
