Victorino Continues to Rake & Run at Riverview

Shane Victorino (calf strain) drilled a line-drive double into the left-field corner and scored and blooped a single to center and stole a base, Kelly Dugan slugged a solo home run, and RHSP Kyle Miller hurled 3.1 IP of one-hit shutout ball, in a Minor League Camp intrasquad game played this morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ. 

The game was called after 7-1/2 innings of play. 

Victorino played RF for four innings and batted three times (2B, 1-3, 1B). He is running OK, and in addition to stealing a base (he also stole a base yesterday), he even tried to lay down a bunt single (he was retired 1-3 on a nice play by pitcher Manny Rondon). 

No sign of Javy Baez on the field today. Baez was beaned on the helmet by a Tyler Skulina fastball yesterday (although he did not appear to be seriously injured and left the field under his own power, he did go directly to the clubhouse, presumably to be tested for a concuussion).

PMEYER89: He's just biding his time, waiting for something to happen. There wasn't room for him at AAA Iowa or AA Tennessee, but obviously the Cubs didn't want to release him, either. I doubt that he will be at Riverview much longer, though. Either the Cubs find a spot for him at AAA or AA, or he'll get released. 

BTW, Dugan's HR today was a monster shot. He turned around a Jose Rosario 97 MPH fastball and sent it into orbit.

CHILDERSB3: Kelly Dugan was the primary first-baseman with AA Tennessee starting when Jacob Rogers was released up until as late as two days ago, but then he was suddenly dropped when (somewhat unexpectedly) Taylor Davis was moved-down to Tennessee from AAA Iowa. and Davis being moved-down happened because the Cubs decided to keep five outfielders (Almora, Andreoli, Kalish, Murton, and Perez) at AAA Iowa instead of the usual four. 

Since Davis plays 1st base as much as he catches, I think the Cubs then saw that  Dugan wasn't needed at Tennessee after-all (since he's strictly 1B-LF-RF, while Giansanti can play just about everywhere and functions as a de facto player-coach when he's not in the lineup). 

I actually was more surprised that Dugan wasn't just released so he can maybe find a job with another organization, instead of hanging around EXtended Spring Training with the Cubs. The Cubs must believe that Dugan has a future with them this season at AA or AAA, but just not at the moment, and they must have told him that.

Also, were you surprised at all that A. Paulo and J. Paniagua made the SBCubs? I had heard of Sepulveda as a prospect, but those two seemed to come from no where to make a full season squad. Thanks,

CHILDERSB3: I had thought coming into Minor League Camp that Blake Headley would be the Opening Day 1st baseman at South Bend, but he had a lousy Minor League Camp and got moved to Eugene/Mesa (and I haven't even seen him on the field now for several days), leaving ex-LHP Chris Pieters as the only 1st baseman at South Bend (not counting Tyler Alamo, who plays a lot of 1st base, and Matt Rose, who played 1st base last year while rehabbing an elbow injury but now plays 3B full-time).

Then 1B-OF Jose Paniagua (who was assigned to Eugene/Mesa) hit a couple of monster home runs in Cactus League MInor League Spring Training games (when he was just roster filler), and he and Pieters suddenly changed places. 

As for Adonis Paula, the Cubs still have to drop one position player from South Bend. Paula was moved-up to South Bend from Eugene/Mesa very late in the process (even later than the Paniagua-Pieters switch), and I'm not sure why. It could be that he will be a "player-coach" (inactive until needed). Same goes for Anthony Giansanti at Tennessee, as well as Ben Carhart at Iowa. These types of players  go on the 7-day DL on Opening Day with some vague soft-tissue injury, available to be reinstated when needed. Until he retired last month, Jonathan Mota had been doing that for years.

It has been absolutely amazing to see the Cubs perform so well so far given the expectations heaped upon them. This is obviously way too early to make any conclusions about this team, but the fact that they seem to be justifying the hype through these first two games is very exciting for the rest of this season.

I think this team is going to have good and bad stretches like any ball team- but consider this: half the lineup hasn't started hitting yet. Imagine those days when everybody's bat is making contact. Prepare for some gaudy run totals.

I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Szczur would get placed on waivers when Baez came back but not sure now. Baez is clearly more talented but he has options and Szczur might not clear waivers now. Interesting discussion they're going to have though and one I didn't see coming.

That's possible I suppose I think though with Madden stating he wants to limit pitcher innings a lot more this year the bullpen is going to get a lot more work and so 12 pitchers might be dangerous. However hey if our pitchers can cruise like Arietta and Lester have might not be an issue.

times through the order is the new pitch count (regarding pulling a pitcher, not injuries)...where 2 is ideal for a starter, 3 is pushing it and 4 is just stupid. I think with Arrieta, Lester and Lackey they'll kind of let them feel it out and obviously depends how they're pitching, while emphasizing to them they want them ready for the playoffs, but I think Hendricks and Hammel will have very short leashes.

We shall see...

Scooter Gennett pulled a Starlin Castro*, I await the uproar over him not being in the game that will never happen. #whitebaseballprivilege

*should have been 3-4 double play but Gennett didn't see or didn't know to tag the runner and threw the ball back to first basemen after Carter tagged 1st base. Considering he was looking at him, I'm not sure what happened there. No harm was done by Giants in inning though.

Meanwhile, Starlin is hitting .625 with 7 RBI after 2 games in NY. Yes, he's on pace for 567 RBI. EDIT: And, apparently, 7 RBI is the most any NYY has ever had in his first 2 games. In the history of the freakin' Yankees. Nicely done, old friend.

he handled the move to 2nd quite well...and his bat even picked up a bit late-season after the move (a bit crazy in sept). still, his bat game is all contact. it's nice when it's finding holes...it's painful when it's not. he handled himself with class as a cub in good times and worse times, imo.

it's just a way of saying "castro isn't going to take a walk" and "he's no ichiro/altuve/etc" when it comes to quality of contact off the bat (especially with castro giving away a lot more outs via the K). altuve's been a bit crazy in that department for a few seasons. not only does he make a great amount of quality contact, he's not exactly waiting around for "his pitch" to get it done. his ABs tend to be over rather quickly, and he ends up on base a lot without drawing many Ks.

    I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

    I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

    Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH. 

    He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

    You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

    Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

    Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

    Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

    The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

    I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

    Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical). 

     

    And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day. 

     

    That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

    That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
