Cubs Sweep D'backs at Salt River Fields

Andruw Monasterio (two doubles and a single) and Kevonte Mitchell (two singles and a sacrifice fly) knocked-in three runs a piece and every player in the lineup (including four late-inning replacements) collected at least one hit as part of a 19-hit attack, helping the Cubs maul the Diamondbacks 15-6 on Whirlwind Field, and 6'8 LHSP Bryan Hudson hurled three innings of no run/no hit ball with no walks and four strikeouts and Yonathan Perlaza drilled a two-run single with two outs in the top of the 8th to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead, as the Cubs rallied to defeat the D'backs 4-2 on Quail Field, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader action this morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ. 

On the negative side, Cubs Squad "A" committed six errors in the game on Whirlwinfd Field, despite winning the game by nine runs. 

For the D'backs, Ramon Hernandez slugged a two-run home run on Quail Field and Luis Silverio belted an RBI triple and a single and scored two runs on Whirlwind Field.

it's weird watching y.gallardo pitch for the O's...dude is struggling to hit 88mph and a big chunk of it is 86-87mph. he's been a rather consistent 90-92mph guy for his career. they had multiple chances to not make this contract after injury concerns, but they did it anyway. *shrug* 2/22m doesn't seem to be quite the deal it seemed to be at the time. it's one thing to assume time off due to a greater potential injury, it's another to purchase damaged-and-showing-it goods.

AZ PHIL- What have you seen from Zac Rosscup lately? Since the Cubs roster is sitting at 39 for a handful of days (after Jokisch got waived) now is he close to at least start pitching in the minors and they're just saving the spot for him when he comes off the 60 man DL so they don't have to outright someone when he's healthy or what?

Not AZ PHIL of course but Zac Rosscup is not looking like much of a prospect now at age 27. If he wasn't a lefty, I am not sure if he would still be still on the Cubs. He's also had his share of injuries, and with his latest DL trip, I personally am not real optimistic about the player remaining depending on the number of options left. Of course the Cubs are not the deepest with MiLB pitching prospects, so who knows...

his ceiling is a lefty middle/setup reliever anyway. the age don't matter as much as the years of cheap club control. his arm/results are deception based more than pure hardcore stuff, but he's averaged around 11 K/9 in the minors and majors...hell, 13-14 K/9 in his AA/AAA years. that said, he doesn't have velocity to lose and if his shoulder doesn't let him get the movement on his pitches that contribute to his deception it might be the end for him. he was flashing better control last year, but even at his best (so far) his control wasn't a strength.

CUBBIES-4-EVER: Zac Rosscup is out on the Agility Field every day, but I haven't seen him throw any bullpen sessions yet. Once he throws a bullpen session (and presuming it goes OK), he could see some game action.

Rosscup is not eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day DL until May 24th, so he can go on a minor league rehab assignment for 30 days beginning no earlier than 4/24. But he'll have to throw in a couple of EXST games (intrasquad, Cactus League, and/or "sim" game) down here before that happens, and he hasn't done that yet.

As far as his spot on the 40-man roster is concerned, I don't think the Cubs dropped Jokisch to make room for Rosscup. Even if Rosscup was eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day DL, the Cubs could just transfer Christian Villanueva from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

The Cubs placed Eric Jokisch on Outright Assignment Waivers as a pre-cursor to releasing him, If a team claims him (Miami did), the Cubs get $20,000 and don't have to pay his salary going forward. If he hadn't been claimed, he would have been outrighted to Iowa, and then would have been released once Beeler and/or Brooks (or Buchanan) is ready to rejoin the I-Cubs rotation.

A minor league player not on an MLB 40-man roster receives only two weeks salary as termination pay when he is released (which would be about $5,000 for Jokisch), but the Cubs would have had to pay Jokisch his entire 2016 minor league split salary ($80,000+) if he was released prior to being outrighted. So the Jokisch move had nothing to do with opening up a slot on the 40-man roster for another player.

AZ Phil: I saw that Iowa pitchers had a nice day yesterday. In particular Michael Wagner, Scott Barnes and CJ Edwards combined for 9K's in 7 innings. What are the chances they get promoted during the season. I thought Edwards is closest, but am not sure now. Are they all bullpen arms? Not much room in the pen unless someone gets injured or there is a trade. If they are deemed to be MLB ready, it might lead to a trade, no?

CUBSTER: Carl Edwards Jr is a definite MLB prospect, but he needs AAA work to develop better command and more-consiastency. He could get called-up at some point in 2016, but I think Spencer Patton is the first RH bullpen call-up if there is one.

Ex-CLE LHP Scott Barnes is a former Indians Top 10 prospect who was signed by the Cubs as a minor league 6YFA post-2015, but he did not get an NRI to big league camp. I saw him pitch several times at Minor League Camp and he racked-up the strikeouts with a 91-93 MPH fastball and a plus-slider. He looked great. Even though he is not on the 40-man roster, I think Barnes very likely could get a call-up as a lefty reliever at some point in 2015, because he has more upside than either Rosscup, Riefenhauser, or Soto (who are on the 40-man roster). The problem with Barnes is that he is out of minor league options, so he cannot be sent back-and-forth to Iowa like the other three LHRP (Rosscup, Riefenhauser, and Soto) can. 

Michael Wagner was the closer at the U. of San Diego and waa Kris Bryant's teammate there. He is a mature and polished high-floor/low ceiling type who has been moved around the organization and pitches wherever he's needed. He's a long-shot to make it to the big leagues, but stranger things have happened.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
