Victorino Helps Cubs Blank A's at Fitch Park

Shane Victorino (two-run single), Trey Martin (RBI double), and Chris Pieters (RBI single) stroked run-scoring hits to highlight a five-run 2nd and four pitchers combined to toss a four-hit shutout, as the Cubs scored eight runs over the first four innings and blanked the Athletics 8-0 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action this morning on Field #4 at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ. 

Shane Victirino (calf strain rehab) served as a DH and singled twice, walked, stole a base, scored two runs, and drove-in two more.  

Ex-KC RHRP Aaron Crow (April 2015 TJS) threw a perfect 1-2-3 twelve-pitch inning to get things started, RHP Jeremy Null followed with four innings of shutout ball, and then RHP Pedro Silverio tossed three innings of perfect baseball, as Cubs pitchers completely throttled the A's hitters.  

The Cubs stole five more bases today, making it 17 SB in their last four games (only one CS). 

In a display of good sportsmanship, A's first-baseman Miguel Mercedes let Cubs first baseman Gustavo Polanco use his glove when playing defense the last three innings of the game, with the two first-basemen laying the glove on top of the 1st base bag at the end of each half-inning for the other to pick-up when he arrived at his defensive position. (We used to do that in my old neighborhood, too). Although Polanco is primarliy a catcher, he also plays 1B, but he forgot to bring his first-baseman's glove to the game, and Chris Pieters (the only other Cubs player at the game with a first-baseman's mitt) is left-handed.

Schwarber's had his knee surgery. In Dallas. I've been somewhat silent on this because I don't have much experience with this combo of injuries. ACL's are very common and reconstruction techniques are much less invasive these days with much of the work done with a scope -- but remember, a torn ACL (only) isn't a comp to what KS had. Also I'm waiting to hear if he had any meniscal damage that needed repair. ACL/LCL combination is not very common in baseball (I have not found one true comp but I suspect there is some out there in the last 25 years). It's probably more common in football as it's usually a contact injury when the knee is struck from the inside to injure the LCL (also known as varus stress). The LCL injury occurred when Fowler made medial (inside) knee contact while KS knee was planted. LCL techniques may be changing so it will be interesting to get more details about that part of his surgery. Historically, LCL repairs were open incision procedures although repair depended on where the ligament was injured and the tissue quality as to whether graft was needed. Newer techniques can address this with small incisions although the LCL runs on the outside of the knee, so how the repair was done will be interesting in itself. The initial reports say the ACL was reconstructed (as expected, which means replaced by a graft) but he LCL was repaired (which implies stitched together without graft). It might be somewhat different when we get more detail I'll do a formal write-up when I have better information. The Cubs team docs at Northwestern clearly used their contacts to select someone with the most experience with this combination of ligament injuries. I was wondering if they felt their sportsmed surgeons would be doing the surgery. Clearly, this was referred out and the most experience would not come from the names we have heard that take care of the high end baseball players. That is why they decided on using the Cowboy's team surgeon for Kyle Schwarber and not the usual Baseball surgical gurus. Dr. Cooper also takes care of the Dallas Stars Hockey team and consults in Soccer for Real Madrid. Safety Tyrann Mathieu of the Arizona Cardinals tore his ACL & LCL (left knee) in December 2013.

Mathieu was back playing in games the second week of the 2014 NFL regular season (just nine months later). Which is the good news. The bad news is that Mathieu tore his right ACL last December in a non-contact play (he landed awkwardly). But at least he did not tear his LCL again. He also says he will be ready for the start of the 2016 NFL regular season.

Thanks AZ Phil. Excellent reference article. Full of accurate quotes from Ortho sportsmed expert Dr. Neal Elattrache who is at the Kerlan-Jobe clinic in LA. He is very well known and respected. The comps seem reasonable here too. There are still variables we need to hear more detail on including technique, extent of LCL damage, meniscal damage and even ACL technique (source of graft).

No timetable to recover yet. I'm sure we'll hear about that from press questions. I'd predict one full year (but without details such as operative findings including the menisci and repair technique used, it's a blind guess) which translates to when the weather warms up in 2017. Catching? Will also have to wait on that topic but return to the OF will be easier at least initially.

So I'm generally an offense over defense guy but Heyward in this Cardinals series has definitely made up for his lack of current hitting with some excellent defensive plays including a perfect throw to get a runner at the plate saving a huge run just now. He's also hit the ball hard at people multiple times now so seeing some hope for his bat.

his swing has gone through many tweaks the past few years. none have given him the power when he was a guy who could hit more than 15 homers years ago. that said, he's a guy who's tried a bunch of tweaks, but still managed to maintain a .350-ish ob% while playing around with different things. he's extremely expensive, but at least he most likely won't suck even if he chooses to stick around for the whole contract without finding much more out of his bat than .350 ob%, 30 doubles, and 10-15 homers.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

    Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
    The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
    Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
    You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
    That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
    But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
    So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
    Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
    Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

    And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
