Brewers @ Cubs: Jungmann vs Arrieta (Game 21)

For his next trick, watch Jake pull a rabbit out of his hat.
MIL (8-12): RHP Taylor Jungmann (0-3, 8.47)
CHC (15-5): RHP Jake Arrieta (4-0, 0.87)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Arrieta only pitched a no-hitter on Thursday in Cincinnati—his second. He didn’t have his best stuff, he said afterward, which meant he walked four. The Brewers are 25-89 (.281) against him, which is obviously not going to continue. Hill is 7-17 with a HR, and Braun and his dealer are 4-10 with a HR.

Jungmann lost to the lowly Twins his last time out (3 ER, 4 IP, 2 Ks, 6 BBs). He was 4-6 with a 5.02 on the road last year. The Cubs are 11-30 (.367) against him. Russell is 3-4, and Soler is 3-5.

Blair (0-1, 5:06) and the Braves vs Lester (2-1, 1.98) open the weekend set tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Comments

Jungmann gave up 6 walks in 4 innings to the Twins? The Cubs lineup will have a field day with this guy.

Video game numbers thought: Dexter Fowler already has amassed 2.0 WAR according to Fangraphs. Puts him on pace for like 16 if it were possible to sustain that for a whole year.

Jake gets another shot at Johnny Vandermeer mlb headlines get cute: Former Cub Pen Pals. Samardzija vs Cashner

In today's baseball environment for people who haven't closely followed Arietta career I think it is valid to have steroid suspicions about anyone who suddenly comes out of nowhere to dominate. We've simply seen too many people get caught for it who long denied it. Now with Arietta he's always had his stuff and pitch speed and he's been that buff even when he was bad, it was just lack of control and the different delivery that was different and he's back to the pitching mechanics he had as a kid. So yes I do completely believe he is clean but I'm not naive enough to be shocked by anyone cheating at this point. Still Stephen A is a jackass and deserves to always get called out.

If Arrieta were caught, I would burn this blog down and find another sport. The Badminton Reporter, anyone?

South Bend Cubs already rained out tonight. Not sure it means much for the north side of Chicago.

Accuweather saying 70+% chance of rain 8PM through the middle of the night. Seems likely this one doesn't get any real momentum if it even starts. Boo. Real bummer to get worked up for an Arrieta start and then have to wait another day for baseball.

raul ibanez replaces schilling's role at ESPN. hopefully he doesn't have a severely reactive victim mentality or a need to receive 10s of millions of government money he's not going to pay back while bitching about others getting a couple hundred a week to pay for rent, medicine, and food. if he can manage to be an ESPN personality that doesn't get suspended at least once a year he'll be doing just fine. john kruk has managed to do it for years while achieving an impressive level of not giving a fuck about his job while not putting any effort into it.

Miserable, wet Chicago April evening. Please don't endanger Arietta- good luck tomorrow.

That was on crazy top of the first -- a single, two walks, 3 stolen bases -- and no runs.

Re ZOBRIST - Today's game is what I was referring to re Zobrist and RISP struggles. He did come through with his patented single to drive in a run - but also left the bases loaded, and two men on, no outs (called 3rd). So, I hope he can pick that part of his game up when they start playing the better teams...

Cubs did a lot of that today: 2-for-17 with RISP. Man, what an ugly baseball game - Cubs receive 11 walks and Bryant reached twice by HBP, the Brewers pitchers threw almost 200 pitches (199 pitches...in 8 innings!), they even walked Baez (first one of the year), Cubs scored twice when Brewers botched routine DP balls, Cahill walks three guys with a 6-run lead, forcing Maddon to waste Strop, the weather sucked again, etc. Happy with the win, but that was really tough to watch.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
