Braves @ Cubs: Teheran vs Lackey (Game 23)

The train keeps a rollin’… except for all the rain.
ATL (5-18): RHP Julio Teheran (0-3, 4.60)
CHC (17-5): RHP John Lackey (3-1, 4.97)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey lost in Cincinnati on Saturday, giving up 6 ER in 5.2 innings, in a complete meltdown of the pitching and a 13-5 loss. Atlanta is 50-178 (.281) against him. Markakis is 23-68 (.338).

Teheran lost a tough one against the Red Sox his last time out (1 ER, 7 IP, 8 Ks, 3 BBs). Atlanta has lost all five games that he’s started this year. He went 3-6 with a 5.40 on the road last year. The Cubs are 11-40 (.275) against him. Fowler is 2-6 with 3 BBs against him.

The MRI on Bryant was good news. He’s available to PH but probably won’t start till Monday.

Hammel (3-0, 0.75) vs Cole (2-2, 2.78) tomorrow at 6:05pmCST to open the roadtrip in Pittsburgh.

Go, Cubs!

rollercoaster loss...ugg. at least it wasn't a "nobody showed up" stomping. anytime you wanna jumpstart your season would be nice, heyward.

He does seem out of synch. His body seems to start forward, then his arms sort of try to catch up -- if that's his normal swing, he will never hit for power. It's an all-arms slasher swing, but the timing seems off. He is currently slugging .256 -- I realize the weather has been bad, but that's epically bad. Currently 92nd out of 94 qualified NL batters. Yikes.

Weird home stand -- 3-1, with 2 rainouts, vs. two teams that will lose 100 games. Feels oddly disappointing. Miserable baseball weather all week -- hopefully better weather will get the bats going. Not just walking, but actually hitting.

Didn't see the game, but it sounded like the Cubs gave away 2 runs with poor fielding. Bummer. Well, it's been a fun diet of Reds, Brewers and Braves, but now the Cubs have to play real teams in May (Pirates, Nationals, SF, Cards and Dodgers) -- hope we are all still smiling when we wake up on Memorial Day.

It looked like the baserunner might have screened Russell some though it's still a play he should have made. I wasn't thrilled with the use of Rondon in that situation. In save situations opponents have a 77 OPS. In non-save situations it's a 116 OPS. We had other relievers for that spot we could have used.

There does seem to be something funky about closers pitching in non-save situations -- they never seem to be as effective. But, to your point, there could not have been a save situation in that game, so why not use your best reliever?

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.

I'll always remember his 3-0 No-hitter against the Braves when Aaron's HR was blown back into the LF well and BIlly Williams made the catch with his back against the ivy.
