Cubs @ Marlins: Hammel vs Fernandez (Game 74)

Um, Cubs?CHC (48-25): RHP Jason Hammel (7-3, 2.55)
MIA (40-35): RHP Jose Fernandez (9-3, 2.36)
First pitch: 12:10pmCST

Hammel lost to the Cards on Tuesday (5.2 IP, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 BB). The Marlins are 35-123 (.285) against him. Prado is 7-19 with a HR.

Fernandez, who is still only 23, pitched well but had a no-decision against Atlanta (7 IP, 0 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) his last time out. He went 6-0 with a 1.38 in his 6 May starts, and is pitching almost as well so far in June. The Cubs are 3-18 (.167) against him. Heyward is 2-7.

If it weren't for the roof, I'd say we should pray for rain. Pray for something.

Arrieta (11-2, 1.74) versus Straily (4-4, 3.83) in Cinci tomorrow at 6:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

per Muscat... Zobrist (2B), Hayward (CF), Bryant (3B), Rizzo, Contreras (LF), Montero, Russell, Coghlan (RF), Hammel

I thought trips to Miami were supposed to be fun. This one sucked. The bottom half of the bullpen now turns close games into blowout losses. Not good. Once Fowler went to the DL, the team went into the tank. Wonder if he'll get any love this offseason? Probably not.

Whoa -- that Contreras play in the 8th looked too much like a "Schwarber" -- nearly crashed into the wall going full speed, with Heyward doing the same. New rule: if you are a catcher playing LF, and find yourself sprinting after a fly ball in the gap -- stop, let the CF go after it and get ready to play it off the wall.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
