2017 Minor League Camp Rosters (Updated 3/28)

3/31 MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ROSTERS UPDATE:

IOWA
to TENNESSEE: RHP Stephen Perakslis 1B Yasiel Balaguert, and INF Jason Vosler;
TENNESSEE
 loaned to YUCATAN (Mexican League): RHP Mario Meza:
TENNESSEE to MYRTLE BEACH: RHP Craig Brooks, Scott Effross, Pedro Araujo, James Norwood, and Jeremy Null, LHP Jordan Minch and Tommy Thorpe, C Tyler Pearson, and 3B Jesse Hodges;
TENNESSEE to SOUTH BEND: C-1B Alberto Mineo;
MYRTLE BEACH to SOUTH BEND: RHP Jared Cheek, John Michael Knighton, Dakota Mekkes, and Tyler Peyton, LHP Marc Huberman, Jose Paulino, and Wyatt Short, 3B Wladimir Galindo, 1B-OF Chris Pieters, and OF D. J. Wilson,

So Cubs Opening Day minor league rosters are starting to take shape.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3/30 MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ROSTERS UPDATE
: RHP Andury Acevedo and RHP David Garner were moved down to the Tennessee squad from the Iowa squad prior to Thursday's doubleheader at Riverview Park, and most of the relief pitchers who were originally assigned to the South Bend squad at the start of Minor League Camp have been moved down to Eugene/Mesa (Extended Spring Training). So expect a half-dozen or more relievers to be moved down to the South Bend squad from the Iowa, Tennessee, and/or (especially) Myrtle Beach squads tomorrow or Saturday.

Also, the Cubs have purchased the contract of 19-year old OF Alonso Gaitan from the Los Toros de Tijuana (Mexican League). Gaitan played for Tijuana against the Cubs at Minor League Camp last week and impressed the Cub brass. I expect one or more Cubs minor leaguers to be "loaned" to Tijuana and/or Yucatan to help alleviate the roster crunch at the end of Minor League Camp.

In addition, catcher Erick Castillo (presently assigned to the Tennessee squad) is no longer switch-hitting. He is now batting only RH. Castillo is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the Cubs system, and batting only RH going forward might help improve the offensive side of his game.

3/29 MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ROSTERS UPDATE
: RHP Juan Carlos Paniagua and RHP Michael Wagner were moved down to the Tennessee squad from the Iowa squad...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3/28 ORIGINAL POST: RHP Jordan Brink, RHP Cole Brocker, RHP Josh Conway, LHP Colton Freeman, RHP Tanner Griggs, RHP Randy McCurry, RHP Zach Rafferty, RHP Alexander Santana, RHP Nick Sarianides, RHP (ex-INF) Ho-Young Son, LHP Kyle Twomey, C Sam Tidaback, INF Munenori Kawasaki, and 1B-OF Jose Paniagua have been released. (RHP Maikel Cleto and RHP Jim Henderson were released earlier).

There will be additional moves made over the next day or two, including roster adjustments at Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach, South Bend, and Eugene/Mesa (Extended Spring Training)  At present, Iowa is 18 players over the Opening Day roster limit, Tennessee is nine over, Myrtle Beach is eight over, and South Bend is seven under. There is no roster limit at Extended Spring Training.

Comments

To help alleviate the minor league roster crunch, one or more players might be loaned to teams in the Mexican League.

AZ PHIL: Any insight on Griggs & Twomey being cut? By the stats line, neither were setting the world on fire, but neither seemed like the weakest link either.

JORGE SOLER: Likely to miss the start of the season with oblique strain. He can't blame the cold on that. Get better dude.

from WSCR... Brian Duensing magically developed back spasms and starts on the DL. 25th roster spot solved. Montgomery only LH in the bullpen. Also confirmed on Roto. Also, Russell's back spasms resolved and he will start taking BP.

It's a shame about Josh Conway. He got snake-bit by the injury bug, especially after that unfortunate groundskeeping screw-up that resulted in his arm injury early on.

what a total shitshow of a game...11-11 in the 6th...shame it's not on tv. lackey got lit the hell up and schwarber hit 2 homers.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

    ...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

    Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

    wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
