Just Another Cubs & Brew Crew Long-Ball Feud at Riverview Park

Cael Brockmeyer reached base five times (three singles, an RBI double, and a walk), Todd Glaesmann doubled and scored, belted a solo home run, and tripled (leaving him a single short of a "cycle"), Stephen Bruno roped a solo HR and an RBI single, walked, and reached base on an HBP, Jeffrey Baez slugged a solo HR and singled, and Jason Vosler doubled twice, scored a run, and drove-in another for the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs), and Lewis Brinson, Nick Noonan, and Brett Phillips drilled consecutive RBI singles to highlight a four-run 2nd inning and then Brinson (two-run shot), Phillips (solo blast), and Ryan Cordell (solo dinger) belted home runs (all three HR coming off RHRP Miguel Mejia) in a four-run 4th for the Colorado Sky Sox (AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers), as the two teams played to a 9-9 tie on Field #6, and Johnny Davis collected four hits and three RBI (two run-scoring doubles and two singles) and Dustin Houle drilled two RBI singles, walked, and scored two runs, leading the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers AA affiliate) to an 11-3 drubbing of the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) on Field #5, in Cactus League Minor League doubleheader action Thursday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.    

Ian Rice smacked a solo HR and singled and scored and Jesse Hodges went 3-3 (two singles and a triple) and scored a run for Tennessee in a losing cause.

A number of players were temporarily moved-up to the Iowa and Tennessee squads from lower levels to replace players who traveled with the Cubs MLB squad to Houston.

RHP Miguel Mejia (competing for a bullpen job with Iowa) and RHRP Daury Torrez (competing for a bullpen job with Tennessee) had especially bad outings at a most inopportune time. Mejia surrendered three home runs (plus two more near HR) in one inning and Torrez was belted around like a BP pitcher (allowing four runs on five hits while only recording two outs). 

Ex-Atlanta Braves RHSP Williams Perez (competing for a SP job with Iowa) was hit hard as well, getting the start for the I-Cubs and allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in just three innings. Unless he is left behind at Extended Spring Training to "find his stuff," there does not appear to be a path to the Iowa roster for Perez.

RHP Andury Acevedo and RHP David Garner were moved down to the Tennessee squad from the Iowa squad prior to Thursday's doubleheader at Riverview Park, and most of the relief pitchers who were originally assigned to the South Bend squad at the start of Minor League Camp have been moved down to Eugene/Mesa (Extended Spring Training). So expect a half-dozen or more relievers to be moved down to the South Bend squad from the Iowa, Tennessee, and/or (especially) Myrtle Beach squads tomorrow or Saturday.

Also, the Cubs have purchased the contract of 19-year old OF Alonso Gaitan from los Toros de Tijuana (Mexican League). Gaitan played for Tijuana against the Cubs at Minor League Camp last week and impressed the Cub brass. I expect one or more Cubs minor leaguers to be "loaned" to Tijuana and/or Yucatan to help alleviate the roster crunch at the end of Minor League Camp.

In addition, catcher Erick Castillo (presently assigned to the Tennessee squad) is no longer switch-hitting. He is now batting only RH. Castillo is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the Cubs system, and batting only RH going forward might help improve the offensive side of his game.

RHRP Jose Rosario pitched in a Cactus League Minor League game again on Thursday and continues to have control issues bordering on "Steve Blass Disease."

At this point I would be surprised if Rosario makes the Iowa Opening Day roster, although being on the MLB 40-man roster means he gets cut more slack than other relievers competing for jobs at AAA and AA.

He could be left behind at Extended Spring Training to work on his issues.

Ugh, that's not encouraging to hear. Cubs' RP depth takes a bit of a hit if he can't get right. Along those lines, any idea why Nick Sarinanides was let go? He was pretty dominant for Tennessee last year and seemed like he could have been useful depth in Iowa

Speaking of Blass/Ankiel - Has Hector Rondon turned into a pumpkin? We'll see in the next 60 days I suppose. He just has not looked good the entire Spring training. He has not pitched well since July of last year. Then the injury. Sept/Oct - opp batters nailed him for 1.141 OPS in 9 games. This is a "trend".

It is scary stuff -- Rondon's ERA on Aug. 2 was 1.70. Then, in Sept/Oct, he gave up 13H and 2BB in 7.1 IP -- WHIP over 2.0. Maddon clearly had no confidence in him in the playoffs, and he has been lousy all spring. With Davis, Strop, CJ, Koji, Grimm and Monty, Hector isn't going to be getting many opportunities in key situations. Hope he can figure something out -- he was a real weapon in 2015 and most of 2016.

    Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
    He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
    Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system

    Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

    Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
