Nationals @ Cubs: Roark vs Hendricks (Game 108)

WAS (63-43): RHP Tanner Roark (8-7, 4.93)
CHC (57-50): RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-3, 3.80)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hendricks gave up 1 ER in 5 innings in Milwaukee on Saturday but ended up with a no-decision in a game the Cubs won 2-1. The Nationals are 15-69 (.217) against him. Harper is 3-10 with a HR.

Roark lost to the Rockies his last time out (5 IP, 4 ER, 8 K, 4 BB). He’s 5-2 with a 4.34 on the road this season. The Cubs are 11-55 (.200) against him. Bryant is 4-8 with a HR, and Rizzo is 4-15 with 2 HR. Heyward is 0-15.

In addition to missing Strasburg, who’s out with a nerve impingement, the Cubs are also not going to see Scherzer, who left Tuesday's game after one inning because of neck spasms.

Lackey (8-9) against TBD tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

EJAX PITCHING AGAINST THE CUBS TOMORROW! Do you think we can get one game in this series now?

Russell to DL, Zastryzny up. Thank goodness, we really needed that 9th guy in the 'pen. They had to cover a whole 11 innings over 3 days!

I had really thought that the 16-3 game 3 days ago would do wonders for the team's confidence. The early-inning blues have returned. IT is that much harder to come back against the good teams.

Murphy is a good hitter. I'd like to see the Cubs get that sort of production from a third-day bat.

RALLY!

cj edwards just keeps getting worse. it's amazing. 2 hits, a walk...0 outs... popout (run scores) and a double play. damage limited.

You know, I feel the same way - but aren't you "Mr. Sample Size"? Looking at his entire year, he has been damn good (I grudgingly have to admit this). But the last two innings he has pitched he has sucked ass. As you see, Maddon brought him right out there today - And, as BB has reminded that I didn't absorb fully - these last 6 games are not playing the Padres, Brewers, or Orioles. I can see why the D-Backs are 6-7 games better now than the Cubs...And the Nationals are more stacked than them.

im the guy that makes fun of sample size then blows it out of whack with a stupid comparison. that said, i do usually warn on a sample size issue if i know it's a point that would fairly be brought up. ...but cj has been at this for a couple months. really sketchy control issues...deep counts, walks. his whip still looks good, but he's not looking anything like a future closer. i still like the guy, but it's been hard to watch him lose the zone.

The unfortunate truth about the 2017 Cubs is that they can't beat good teams because they aren't as good as those teams. LAD, COL, AZ, WASH - Cubs are 7-14 against them. Throw in NYY and BOS, and the record against quality teams drops to 8-19. The good news is if they can survive the next 8 games (4-4 will do nicely against WAS and 6-game trip to SF and AZ), they will be done with said quality teams and can go back to playing everyone else, against whom they are 17 over, if my math is correct. The hot start post-AS break was nice, but the reality is that this team is in the second tier of the NL. But, it's baseball, and inferior teams beat superior teams all the time, so we'll see.

The Tampa Bay Rays don't seem particularly interested in beating the Brewers this weekend. Shut out yesterday and shut out thru seven innings today.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
