Cubs @ Reds: Lackey vs Bailey (Game 124)

CHC (66-57): RHP John Lackey (10-9, 4.67)
CIN (53–72): RHP Homer Bailey (4-6, 8.44)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

This is a repeat of last week’s matchup. Lackey limited the Reds to one run over 6 innings but came away with a no-decision and ended his five-game winning streak. The Cubs would go on to win 7-6, when Baez scored on Wood’s wild pitch.

Lackey is 1-1 with a 4.67 in his three starts against the Reds this season, Overall, they are 60-206 (.291). Cozart (7-20, 2 HR), Gennett (10-27, HR), Hamilton (11-31), and Votto (8-27, 2 HR) all hit him well.

For his part, Bailey gave up 6 ER in 5.2 innings, striking out 10 and walking 1. The Cubs are 25-86 (.291) against him. Rizzo is 8-21 with 2 HR, and Jay is 9-30 with a HR.

It’s Montgomery (3-6), in for Lester, and Wojciechowski (3-2) tomorrow at the same time to continue the series.

Go Cubs!

zobrist scratched from the lineup...because he couldn't get a rental car in nashville, tn to get to the game... yes, that is the real given reason. happ at 2nd.

here's the novelty jersey names for the cubs. not surprisingly, lester still hasn't found a sense of wonder, whimsy, or humor. la stella also calls the cops on your party 1 minute after the noise violation period kicks in. http://i.imgur.com/Uh8lxGQ.jpg

Really wish replay was only used for legit close plays that it was intended for. Not neighborhood calls or guys popping an inch off the bag after a slide.

It's August 22nd and Jason Heyward has 10 doubles on the season. With juiced baseballs. That is all.

cubs tie! ...and happ is out at home on one of the worst cubs runner sends in years. but hey, tie.

Like the small ball inning though. Sac Fly RBI Ground Out Two Out RBI Cubs haven't done that much this year...let alone in one inning.

Why is WGN doing a Ford "Drive of the Game" in the 5th inning? For a Cincy Home Run???

Lackey was one pitch away from an effect outing. It's a shame Javy didn't get a chance to bat with the bases loaded - conceivable the Cubs could still have the lead even after giving up the three run bomb

El Mago, baby. El Mago translates to "making shit happen" - mostly in a good way

Votto is such a smart hitter. When he gets down 0-2, he realizes he won't see a strike for at least 2 pitches, so he doesn't chase. I hope Javy and Happ were watching that. Then, at 3-2, he got the benefit of the doubt because he's Joey Votto.

I remember watching Nomar Garciaparra when he debuted with Boston and thinking at the time how jarring it was that the guy would adjust his batting gloves between every pitch. Now a guy is unusual if he doesn't. Also, due to absence of Cubs, I watched a few innings of Pirates-Dodgers last night and was again reminded that Pedro Baez is the worst thing to happen to baseball since the color barrier. Hence: Me = Team Pitch Clock

TIE!!!

That at bat by Baez shows what amazing potential he has. Swung at two pitches that weren't anywhere close to the plate. Almost chased a 3rd about a foot low and outside. Then was patient to get the count in his order, then solid contact right in the zone and didn't try to do too much with it.

glorious reds collapse. "damn, not much has been worse than our pen lately." - cubs pen "hold my beer." - reds pen

Rizzo pulling a Don Mattingly and playing third base in the ninth. Hopefully KB removed for just precautionary reasons and his wrist is okay.

bryant xrays negative (left upper hand/lower wrist) day to day...and may be fine to go tomorrow.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.
