Cubs @ Phillies: Lackey vs Nola (Game 129)

CHC (69-59): RHP John Lackey (10-9, 4.90)
PHI (47-81): RHP Aaron Nola (9-9, 3.58)
First pitch: 12:35pmCST

Lackey gave up 6 ER in 5 innings and ended up with an ugly no-decision against the Reds on Tuesday, in a game the Cubs went on to win 13-9. He had a no-decision against the Phillies at Wrigley in May (5 IP, 3 ER, 6 K, 0 BB). Overall, they are 21-74 (.284) against him. Herrera is 5-13.

Nola lost to the Marlins his last time out (6.1 IP, 7 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). He’s 6-4 with a 3.38 at home this season. The Cubs are 5-17 (.294) against him. Rivera is 2-4.

Montgomery (4-6) takes the mound at Wrigley against Williams (5-6) and the Pirates tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Nick Pevetta (4-9, 6.73 ERA) starting instead of Nola. Cubs need to capitalize on these kind of breaks.

has anyone checked to see if maddon is still alive because i think he dropped dead in the 5th while the hit and wild pitch parade was going on for 5 runs.

Lackey is truly a quality 4-inning pitcher. Just had a feeling about him in the 5th. Also had a bad feeling after not scoring a lot more runs in the first.

First time in a while they have not fulfilled their billybucks assignment: a 3-3 week (done) and a 5-2 week (done). This was supposed to be a 4-2 week (I resisted the temptation to make it 5-1). So, I guess they'll have to find a way to make up that game over the next 5 weeks. I already had them down for 5-2 at home vs. PIT and ATL this coming week.

Got to give the Brewers credit -- 9-game trip to COL, SF and LAD, and they go 5-4. I really thought if the Cubs went 6-3 (which they did), they would pick up several games on the Brewers. Instead, the lead is only 2 games. Beating the Phillies would have been a really good idea.

Cubs are 9 over with 33 to play. I'm thinking 88 wins (14 over) should do it, so they need to go 19-14 the rest of the way to get there. It would be nice to have a 5-2 week to get to 12 over. Let's do that. Man, that triple play was a game-turner. If that ball lands a foot shorter, the Cubs get a run and have 2 on with no outs and a possible big, game-breaking inning. But, not to be.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
