Brewers @ Cubs: Nelson vs Lackey (Game 141)

MIL (72-68): RHP Jimmy Nelson (11-6, 3.59)
CHC (77-63): RHP John Lackey (11-10, 4.74)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Friday night's alright for fighting.

Lackey beat the Braves (7 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) on Friday. He’s 1-1 with a 4.50 in two starts against the Brewers this season. Overall, they are 35-133 (.263) against him. Santana is 5-12 with a HR.

Nelson won against the Nationals his last time out, keeping them off the board for 7 innings and striking out 11. He’s 0-0 with a 6.35 in two games against the Cubs this season. For their careers, the Cubs are 38-161 (.236) against him. Heyward is 7-25 against him.

The Cubs enter the weekend with a five-game lead over the Brewers and Cardinals.

Anderson (8-3) and Montgomery (5-7) throw tomorrow at 3:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

I hope the Happ leadoff thing last night was an audition for next year: - Happ CF - Schwarber LF (Almora CF, Happ to LF vs. LHP) - Bryant 3B - Rizzo 1B - Contreras C - Heyward RF - Baez 2B - Russell SS Caratini, Zobrist, Almora and one more on the bench. I know Joe doesn't like or use a "set lineup", but I hope this is the group that is out there most days. Zo would become a utility backup player (I assume Russell will get even more days off next year, given his annual breakdowns). It will be interesting to see if Joe is willing to make that move.

Dillon Maples? Will Joe give Dillon Maples a shot tonight since Wilson pitched last night?

Willson Contreras goes 1-2 in four PA as DH at Myrtle Beach -- ground single to left, two walks (one intentional), and a pop-out to 2nd (P-4) to end the game and the Pelicans season.

ryan* braun* HR* #300* also, lackey has had 4 balls in the 1st hit warning track deep. braun's went over the wall. boo.

Lackey is a servicible #5 pitcher. Just like J Hammel, however, I would NEVER put him on the Playoff roster should they make it cause you're behind the 8-ball after the 2nd inning.

taylor davis's hair featuring taylor davis is making him MLB debut in the 7th. i miss his pre-haircut look. whatever. good for him for finally getting a taste of the bigs. ...and he K's. still, another victory for a modern domestic undrafted FA player making it to the bigs. he's no kevin millar, but it's still a nice 'check it out' to all the teams that passed on him.

Cubs efforts to manipulate the schedule have backfired so far. The No-Rain rainout vs. MIL was made up and the Brewers crushed the Cubs -- moving today's game from afternoon to night hasn't gone well, either. Bizarre offense this year -- they either score a ton of runs or none at all.

Zobrist at cleanup again. That is simply idiotic. No possible logical reason for it. What the hell is Maddon trying to prove?

In reply to by crunch

The only explanation I can come up with that I could defend even a little bit is that Joe feels for some reason that Bryant and Rizzo HAVE to bat 2 and 3 and that of the rest of the guys on the current roster, Zobrist is least likely to get over-amped or flustered by batting clean-up. My real belief is that Zobrist has pictures of Joe buying crappy wine and putting it in good bottles.

I'm not optimistic that the Cubs will win one game this series. But maybe Monty can throw a gem.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it

    alzolay...bro...

wow.  what a blown call.  go cubs, i guess.

neris is good for 70-ish appearances and having him throw 89-91mph fastballs was something i was not looking forward to for 70-ish games.

his splitter today was ranging 82-83mph...also a bit faster than spring performances.

    Holy shit this umpire sucks

However, all is forgiven when his suckiness works in favor of the Cubs.

Neris must have been sand-baging spring training. He's a veteran, so he knew what he was doing. Had me fooled to be honest. Glad I was wrong.

  • hellfrozeover (view)

Looks like he might the cliche veteran pitcher in spring not really ramping it up and just “forking on stuff” in spring. If he gets to 94 on the regular he’ll do just fine.

  • crunch (view)

topped out a 94mph, threw 4 of those.  feeling a lot better about neris.

  • crunch (view)

neris has thrown 2 pitches at 93mph out of his first 5 pitches.  that's a positive turn.
