WAS (1-2): RHP Tanner Roark (0-0, —)
CHC (2-1): RHP Jake Arrieta (0-0, —)
First pitch: 3:00pmCST (TBS)
Arrieta left his last start early (Sept. 26 in St. Louis) with a strained hamstring. Let’s hope it holds up. He went 3 innings and gave up 3 runs and was tagged with the loss.
He went 14-10 with a 3.53 for the season, including going 5-2 with a 2.90 at Wrigley. In 7 post-season starts, Arrieta has a 3.64 ERA.
Jake gave up 5 ER in 4 innings and lost to the Nationals in DC in June. Overall, they are 32-134 (.239) against him. Rendon is 4-11; Murphy is 5-17. Lind and Werth have taken him deep.
Roark last pitched an inning of relief (Oct. 1) against the Pirates, in which he gave up 2 ER. He gave up 6 ER in 4.2 innings in Philly, for the loss. For the season, he went 13-11 with a 4.67. On the road, he went 7-5 with a 4.26.
He beat the Cubs at Wrigley in June (6.1 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB). For their careers, they are 17-79 (.215) against him. Bryant is 5-11 with a HR.
Hey, let’s close out the series at home—and on Trans’s birthday!

I'll bet the analytics guys told him to.

Bote's single accounts for RBI #26 on the year. Happ leads the team with 28 RBI - Bote got his in 72 fewer at bats than Happ.

pinch hitting j.martinez for v.caratini is another "why we doing this" batting substitution to add to the pile.
so far i'm a bit perplexed by some of the guys d.ross is having pinch hit in certain situations more than anything he's doing. almost everything else seems mostly sane.

lester with a "comeback" appearance... it's PIT, though...who could easily end up not even winning 20 games this season (15 as of now). still looked decent, even if not overpowering.

yeah, the oblique is one of those "few days, few weeks, months?" injuries. trying to come back too soon puts guys back to starting over.

Depending the severity, that may be how his Cub tenure ends. Hopefully not, he deserves better than that

bryant down with "right oblique" pain...

The Troy Glaus comp has held up pretty well.
I don't know whether to think he's playing through an injury or going through similar small-sample frustrations as Baez, Rizzo, Schwarber, and to a lesser extent Contreras.

Shockingly by virtue of that HR he has been infinitely more productive than Jose Martinez

baez just bunted for a RBI single. that's both impressive and sad.
honestly, there's more than a few power hitters out there that can't bunt worth a damn and he pulled it off with enough ease you know he's put some work in. it's nice to see it done well even if you don't wanna see him do it a lot.

Anyone else remember how Andre Dawson and his creaky knees looked in the 1989 NLCS against the Giants? That's the vibe I'm getting with KB. Not sure what is up with Bote but I hope he gets some consideration for starting at third.

If spotty command and inconsistency wasn't a concern, Rex Brothers would be Josh Hader. Right? I mean, a LHRP with a 95-97 FB and an 89 SL and he strikes out the side (which also happened to be the heart of the Twins order) 1-2-3 (all three swinging).
