Cubs @ Marlins: Hendricks vs Smith (Game 2)

CHC (1-0): RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-0, -.--)
MIA (0-1): LHP Caleb Smith (0-0, -.--)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Hendricks went 7-5, 3.03 in 2017 (3-2 with a 2.83 on the road), after missing a month and a half with inflammation in his pitching hand. Overall, these Marlins are 10-46 (.217) against him. Maybin is 2-4; Bour has one hit and 4 RBIs in eight chances. (Do the math.)

Smith, who came to Miami from the Yankees last year in a roster management trade, sported a 7.71 ERA in 9 appearances, mostly in relief. None of the Cubs have faced him. He probably would like to keep it that way.

Darvish makes his debut tomorrow at the same time against Odrisamer Despaigne.

Go Cubs!

While none of the Cubs batters have officially faced Caleb Smith, he was in spring training camp with the Cubs last March (he was a Rule 5 draft pick who was returned to the Yankees) so the Cubs staff should be somewhat familiar with him and know some of his strengths and weaknesses.  Maybe some even have had a chance to hit off him last spring.

PIT with a 4 run lead going to the bottom 9th (after scoring 4 in the top of the 9th) vs DET...rivero comes in to lock it down...and gives up 2 runs...so hurdle brings in josh "5.00 era" smoker with 2 on left by rivero who promptly gets this game tied.

basesballs.  woo.

to the 10th...

wow...we get our first replay review controversy in the bottom 10th on what should/could have been a DET game winner on a play at the plate initially ruled safe, but overturned. a slew of the PIT team was out of the dugout and in the clubhouse when it was overturned. gardenhire ejected...onto the 11th. crazy.

caleb smith has thrown 20 pitches, 4 have been in the zone...and everyone's swinging (except rizzo, who walked).

...then schwarber comes up not swinging, sees 2 in the zone for called strikes...then swings at a 3rd high and outside the zone. basesballs.

via jd...

don mattingly is the longest tenured manager in the NL East.  this is his 3rd season.

One thing you can take to the bank:  the immortal Caleb Smith will gve up at least 5 runs in his next start.

cj edwards escapes a bases loaded (by his doing) 8th to maintain the 1-1 tie. contreras is mega-pumped. edwards is pissed with his performance, throwing his glove in the dugout (1ip 1h 2bb 2k, 0r/er).

great game so far.  low scoring, but just enough action to maintain interest.

man, contreras celebrates hard when he gets stoked about his pitchers coming through with something clutch to end a threatening inning.

also, it's time for the 11th inning.

eddie butler in 2018 reliever version seems to be throwing 95-96mph fastballs...or the gun is hot.

to the 14th!

e.butler 3.1ip 0h 1bb 4k, 44 pitches

awwww

garcia (lefty pitcher) IBB contreras with men on the corners in order to face heyward, 1 out...now bases loaded...heyward GIDP 1st/home.  bruuuuuuuuuuuh.  sigh.

it was sharp contact, but it got snagged right at 1st base near the line.

morrow makes his cubs debut with 2 on in the bottom 17th (belonging to butler) and the marlins win on his 2nd pitch with a hit to CF.

welcome to the cubs morrow.

7ip 4h 1bb 5k, 1r/er for e.butler...his longest outing of his career comes in relief...and the toughest loss of his career, too.

fun game.  cruddy outcome.

To top off the fun, Cub fan favorite Ryan Braun hits a two out, 0-2 pitch for a three-run homer in the ninth against the Padres ... Brewers trailed 6-3 going into the 9th and end up winning 8-6. This after squeeking out a win in extras yesterday too.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
