Jared Young Has Rake, Will Travel

Jared Young drilled an RBI double and a two-run HR, Cam Balego mashed a two-run HR, singled, walked, and scored three runs, Tyler Payne slugged a two-run HR and singled twice, and RHSP Javier Assad hurled five inings of one-run ball, leading the South Bend Cubs to a 6-1 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Field #5, and LHSP Jose Paulino tossed five innings of shutout ball and Carlos Penalver belted a solo HR to help the Tennessee Smokies whitewash the Iowa Cubs 3-0 on Field #6, in Minor League Camp intrasquad game action Saturday morning on John Arguello Way at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Jared Young has been the hottest hitter in Cubs Minor League Camp this month, leading all Cubs minor leaguers in home runs with four. He went 5-5 at Fitch Park versus Beloit yesterday (four singles and a double), and continued to rake today with the RBI double and two-run HR. He is a hitting-machine. (A natural second-baseman, Young has been playing 1B-2B-3B-LF at Minor League Camp to help increase his player-value going forward).   

RHSP Jen-Ho Tseng threw six innings (80 pitches) and allowed two runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk with five strikeouts for the I-Cubs on Field #6, in preparation for his Opening Day start next Thursday in Des Moines against Oklahoma City.

The Defensive Gem of the Game (on Field #6) was turned in by an unexpected source, one Stephen Bruno (normally an infielder, and not known for his defense). Bruno made a spectacular leaping catch over the top of the LF fence and pulled back a near-certain HR-ball off the bat of Jesse Hodges that left the other players and the coaches in near hysterics.
 
Yeiler Peguero had an interesting day, playing 3B for South Bend on Field #5 for six innings before carrying his bat and glove across the walkway to Field #6 and playing 2B for Tennessee for the final two innings of the Iowa-Tennessee game (the two games were played simultaneously and started and ended at about the same time). 

Several pitchers were inserted into the lineups on Field #6 so that they could practice bunting in game situations.  

Although the games were ostensibly Iowa vs Tennessee and Myrtle Beach vs South Bend, the Eugene/Mesa (Extended Spring Training) squad actually contributed the lion's share of the position-players (22 to be exact) to the two games, as a number of players from the four "full-season" squads got the day off. The main purpose of the games was to get innings for pitchers who were scheduled to throw in a game today (the Cactus League minor league season concluded yesterday, so intrasquad games are the only option right now), and to allow the starting pitchers to increase their pitch-counts to where they will need to be once the minor league regular-season begins next week.  

The Opening Day rosters for the four Cubs "full-season" affiliates should be announced within the next couple of days. Collectively the four teams are 17 over the Opening Day active roster limit, but most of the trimming will involve players going onto the 7-day DL and/or being assigned to  Extended Spring Training.

Thanks as always, Phil.  Hard to believe the exhibition games are done already.  Time flies!  

Hadn't realized Jared Young had any power, just assumed that wasn't a tool.  Does he look built enough, or have you seen BP enough to notice, whether he might actually have some power?  

I went back and checked his background on bbcube, and was surprised.  I'd *assumed* he was a 3-year Old Dominion guy, and that he might be a rather experienced guy and close to his ceiling already.   But he actually only played one year at OD, following one year at a JC in Oklahoma, following a year at a small North Dakota college where he doesn't appear to have played; and being from northern British Columbia.  

Interesting, because perhaps his background didn't have him playing a ton of baseball, so perhaps he's got more untapped potential than most guys his age?

CRAIG: Jared Young's "hit tool," power, AND versatility have really emerged at Minor League Camp. He has taken well to coaching from the Cubs hitting instructors. He is a very willing student. A lot like David Bote in Spring Training last year. It will be interesting to see how he fares in the Midwest League once the regular season starts. And as a Canadian kid he hopefully won't be adversely affected by April-May in the Midwest, as players from warmer climates sometimes are.

BTW, I actually like a couple of other Cubs college position-player draft picks from last year as well. Brandon Hughes is a toolsy outfielder who can play all three OF positions, and he has had a solid Minor League Camp and has made the South Bend Opening Day roster after spending much of Minor League Camp with the Myrtle Beach squad. Austin Upshaw is an advanced hitter who can play 1B-2B-3B, and he easily made the Myrtle Beach Opening Day roster without any second-thoughts. But J. Young is a better hitter than Hughes and more athletic and a better defender than Upshaw.

Thanks, Phil. I like these guys who were good college hitters, being high-average strong-contact low-K guys. Thanks for notes on all three of Young, Upshaw, and Hughes. I'll watch for them as the season unfolds. Will be nice to have some box-score names to follow! :)

    I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

    Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets. 

     

    So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

    One more thing about Edwin Escobar. Even though he had accrued less than one year of MLB Service Time prior to signing with Nippon Ham in 2017 (he ended up eventually with Yokohama), he will have Article XIX-A rights by virtue of the seven seasons he spent in Japan. So he will be essentially locked on the 40-man roster (or at least he can't be outrighted without his consent), and he will be a FA whenever his contract expires.

    Also, Pirates were supposedly in on Escobar, too, so if the Cubs sign him to a minor league contract there is a very good chance that the Pirates will select him in the Rule 5 Draft. So even though it means he would take up a slot on the 40, it better be a major league contract if the Cubs don't want to lose him right after signing him!
