CHC (5-4): RHP Tyler Chatwood (0-1, 1.50)
First pitch: 1:10pmCST

Chatwood was the tough-luck loser in his Cubs debut, giving up 1 run in 6 innings in Cincinnati, in a game the Cubs lost 1-0. Overall, the Pirates are 10-43 (.233) against him. Mercer is 2-3 with an RBI, and Freese is 3-9.

Nova lost against the Twins (5.1 IP, 5 ER) his last time out. He went 2-1 with a 4.86 in 3 games against the Cubs last year. The Cubs are 21-97 (.216) against him. Happ is 3-8 with 2 HR, and Russell is 2-5 with a HR.

Lester (1-0) and Brault (2-0) go tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

AZ PHIL: What's up with Charcer Burks? Such a terrific LF - but how is his hitting coming along? Any progress? Could he develop the Billy Hamilton "slash" style at least?

In reply to by The E-Man

E-MAN: Charcer Burks is repeating AA Tennessee after a mediocre showing in the Arizona Fall League post-2017 and struggling in Spring Training this year. I'm not sure why, but his development appears to have stalled (at least for the time being).

AZPHIL:  You have Wladimir Galindo listed as a "long shot" on the last group.  Do you not see a lot in him or is hejust too young and inexperienced that a team wouldn't want to take a chance on him.  It seems with the slow/stalling devolpement of D.J. Wilson, that Galindo and Aramis Ademan so far are the only position prospects, unless I'm wrong, that are worth seeing any real promise.  Given they are blocked in the loaded infield, but let's face it in a couple years are the Cubs really still going to be able to roll out Russell, Baez, Bryant, and Rizzo??  Not likely. Baseball is a business, especially with Russell and Bryant being Scott Boras clients (and Bryce Harper, maybe a pipe dream).

CUBBIES=4-EVER: I have Wladimir Galindo listed as a "long-shot" for being added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster post-2018 because he would need to reach AA and succeed at that level during the course of the 2018 season for him to become a viable 2018 Rule 5 Draft candidate, and even if some club were to select him in the Rule 5 Draft, the Cubs would have a very good chance of getting him back because a power-hitting third-baseman not ready for MLB is hard to stash on an MLB 25-man roster for an entire season.

As for who the best Cubs position-player prospects are below AA, I would say Aramis Ademan, Miguel Amaya, Nelson Velazquez, and Christopher Morel are better prospects than either D. J. Wilson or Wladimir Galindo, although I do like both Wilson and Galindo.

gordo says rizzo is gonna go on the DL.

i still can't believe caratini is the best they can do with a 1st replacement.  with all the bench warming lastella does it would be nice to see him play a bit.

Under the new (for 2017) 10-day DL rule, a 10-day DL assignment can be backdated only three days. (A 7-day Acute Concussion DL stint can be backdated four days). So if the Cubs had placed Rizzo on the DL last Friday they could have backdated it to last Tuesday and Rizzo would have been eligible to be reinstated this coming Friday. But because the Cubs waited to place Rizzo on the DL, the DL stint can be backdated only to last Friday (if he is placed on the DL today) or to last Saturday (if Rizzo is not placed on the DL until tomorrow), and so now he won't be eligible to be reinstated until next Monday or Tuesday (depending on when he is placed on the DL).

And Anthony Rizzo has been placed on the Cubs MLB 10-day DL retroactive to last Friday (4/6), so the earliest he can be reinstated is next Monday (4/16). The Cubs have not yet announced a roster replacement for Rizzo, so they temporarily have a 24-man Active Roster.

@AZ Phil - Are you sure that's right about backdating on the DL? From my reading, the backdating only goes back for previous days that the player did not play due to the injury. Rizzo played on Thursday, so even if they put him on the DL on Friday, it couldn't be backdated because he played those days before. I believe they waiting the 3 days before putting him on the DL to see if they could avoid it all together. If they are allowed to back-date further while a player was actually playing, there would be absolutely no point to having a "10-day DL" and it would essentially be a "7-day DL." Also Phil, in wondering about who the Cubs may bring up to replace Rizzo, how would it work if they brought up Gimenez? Once he's added to the 40-man and 25-man roster, would they even be able to send him back without having to clear waivers or anything? If so, I don't see any reason to bring him up unless they actually need a catcher. Seeing as they had Zobrist in the starting lineup at 1st base for today's postponed game, I'm of the opinion that they won't bring Gimenez up, and it will be someone like Bote or even an outfielder, especially if Zobrist gets the majority of 1B playing time. ***edit to add*** Never mind on this last question about the roster as reading down the page I saw you answered my question before I even asked it. That makes me think that Zagunis would be the call up since he's a high OBP guy, and can pose as an emergency backup catcher while Zobrist and Caratini split the playing time there. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bryant play some 1b to get LaStella some more time at 2nd base with Javy at third. Love this teams flexibility!

In reply to by Lester's rattl…

LRB: Until you mentioned it, I had forgotten that Rizzo played last Thursday. For some reason I was thinking he hadn't played since last Monday in Cincinnati. Yes, a 10-day DL assignment can only be backdated for a maximum of three days and then only if the player did not play during that period of time. So in Rizzo's case the Cubs could only backdate the DL assignment to last Friday, which is probably why they waited until Monday to make the decision. Thanks for paying attention. I should try that sometime.

I would be bringing Ryan Court to Chicago. He can play all over the field and had a great Spring and deserves a call.

Rough debut for Holland in STL -- starts out the 10th, faces 5 hitters: 4 BB (one IBB) and a sac bunt, walks in the winning run.  Ouch.

The problem with bringing up Chris Gimenez (for example) is that once he is on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster (and 25-man roster) it will be next to impossible to send him back to Iowa. He is out of minor league options, plus he is an Article XIX-A player so he can't be sent outright to the minors without his consent, but he would almost certainly be claimed off waivers anyway. The Cubs signed Efren Navarro specifically to be the first-baseman at Iowa and be available as an injury-replacement for Anthony Rizzo. Also, once Navarro is on the 40-man roster, he can be optioned back to Iowa once he is no longer needed on the 25 because he has one minor league option left. Chris Coghlan (MLB veteran and member of the 2016 World Series champion Cubs) has been playing in games at Extended Spring Training and can play 1B-2B-3B-LF-RF and provide a lefty bat off the bench but as with Gimenez it would be near-impossible to send him back to Iowa once he is on the 40-man (and 25-man) roster. Taylor Davis (who can play C-1B and 3B in a pinch) and Bijan Rademacher (a LH-hitter who can play 1B-LF-RF) would be a couple of other possibilities. Like Navarro, Davis and Rademacher were NRIs to Spring Training (and Davis was up with the Cubs last September as well) so Maddon and the coaches know them and what they can and cannot do. If the Cubs want to call-up a player who is already on the 40, then Mark Zagunis would probably be the guy. Among other things, Zagunis can be an emergency catcher.

Happ CF, Bryant 3B, Zobrist 1B, Contreras C, Schwarber LF, Russell SS, Heyward RF, Baez 2B, Chatwood P

I would think that Navarro will come into a game as a late-inning defensive replacement at 1st base when the Cubs are trying to protect a lead (Navarro was a Gold Glove winner in the minors), and in other circumstances he will be a second LH bat off the bench (behind LaStella). Navarro is not an everyday MLB first-baseman.

That's probably what will happen and the move makes a lot of sense. I like the idea of being cautious with Rizzo early in the season, I bet he plays if it was the postseason. It would have been cool to see Ryan Court (Elgin, IL native) called up for the home opener, but we'll probably see him at some point.

bad chatwood today, but at least he's not walking guys.

in the long-run it's the walks (and pushing up the pitch count) that seems to be his biggest knock.

Well at least the Cubs battled back enough for the Bucs to bring their closer (Rivero or whatever name he's going by now) into the 8th inning - and nice hit by JHey off the dude to make it a save situation. Never thought this game would get that close after Monty left it.

Think the Pirates (8-2) are hot?  All 8 position players in today's lineup now have an OBP of .342 or higher., with 5 over .375.

How about a little regression to the mean over the next 2 days?

i know it's only april 10th, but maybe it's time to put the "happ the leadoff man" experiment on the shelf for a little while.

the team has nothing close to a real leadoff man, but happ is pretty much the worst performing option right now.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
