While Waiting for Phat Adbert
The Iowa Cubs are 2-6 out of the gate. The winning percentage will surely climb from the nadir of .250, but the place in the standings? Maybe not. The Cub-board isn't completely bare, but the big bone Chicago has to throw at their poor fans here in Des Moines this season is still rounding into form at EXST in the desert.
Meanwhile, exactly one player on the currently active I-Cub roster has homered in the first eight games. David Bote, an INF with some promise, has managed two. Jacob Hannemann is fun to watch play CF and run the bases, but the rulebook still prohibits stealing first base and his OBP so far is merely .154. Mark Zagunis is thought to be of at least big league 4th OF potential, a hitter with a discerning eye, but even early on, it is not good to have more walks (5) than hits (3 - all singles).
On the mound, Underwood, Tseng, Hancock, and Maples, in particular, bear watching, but if any spotlight is to shine on the farm system this summer, it will be for Alzolay to steal it, and, unlike Hannemann, he does not even have to reach base. He only has to get here. I will be waiting.
