To Add-bert Alzolay

The Cubs will be playing a doubleheader this coming Saturday at Cincinnati and Cubs #1 pitching prospect  is expected to be added to the Cubs MLB Active List as the "26th Man" and make his MLB debut by getting a start in one of the games.

Here is the "26th Man" rule:

Beginning on MLB Opening Day and extending up through August 31st, a club can temporarily add a 26th player to its MLB Active List on any day where two games are scheduled, as long as the second game was not scheduled as the result of a game that was postponed or suspended the previous day. If the postponed or suspended game was from the previous day, a "26th man" can be temporarily added to a club's MLB Active List for the second game only.

1. The "26th man" must be on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or has to be added to the club's 40-man roster that day.

2. The "26th man" does not have to be a pitcher.

3. In the case of two games being scheduled on the same day where the 26-man Active List limit is in effect for both games, the "26th man" cannot be switched between games.

4. A minor league player can be added to a club's Active List as the "26th man" even if he has not spent ten days on Optional Assignment (or Outright Assignment) prior to being added.

5. A "26th man" can remain on the Active List and a different player can be dropped the next day, as long as the "26th man" was not called up from the minors prior to spending at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment. However, a player called up as the "26th man" prior to spending at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment could remain on the 25-man roster if the player replaces a player who is placed on the Disabled List (or other MLB inactive list) the next day.

6. If a player is recalled as the "26th man" and is optioned or outrighted back to the minors the next day, the "10-day rule" clock (prohibiting a player from being recalled until he has spent at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment, unless he is replacing a player who is placed on the DL or other MLB inactive list) does not start over again. However many days toward ten that the player spent on Optional or Outright Assignment prior to being recalled as the "26th man" counts toward the ten days.

7. The "26th man" accrues one day of MLB Service Time.

Unfortunately, Alzolay getting lit up in the early going this afternoon. Thru 3 innings, he's allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, including 2 home runs.

Duane Underwood has pitched pretty effectively this year, including his start last Friday. Perhaps he gets some consideration for the start too.

unless they hold underwood out from his next start it's alzolay or tseng. yow, 3hr given up by alzolay today. as good as alzolay is, it's probably important to keep his talent in perspective. he's the best cubs prospect, but he's only on 1 top-100 MLB prospect list (BP - #95). that said, i imagine he'll make all 3 of the major prospect lists with a decent AAA showing this year even if it's not spectacular. he just turned 23 a few months ago and has shown some great stuff outside of a couple bad outings.

Alzolay and Q on the same page today: both going 4.2 innings, giving up 9 hits and 3 home runs, with Adbert only giving up 5 runs to Q's 6.  It's like synchronized swimming but with cement shoes on.

"Yu Darvish threw his new pitch, a two-seam/splitter hybrid, during his first intrasquad game appearance on Saturday.

Darvish, who already had 10 different pitch variations in his arsenal, is calling this new pitch "The Supreme.""

"I've been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement," (Terry) Francona said. "I know in the past, when I've been asked about, whether it's our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we're never trying to be disrespectful. And I still feel that way, but I don't think that's a good enough answer today. I think it's time to move forward. It's a very difficult subject. It's also delicate," he said.

freddy freeman + aaron nola are also positive star players.

the scary thing is freeman tested negative on tuesday.  by thursday he was sick and tested positive shortly afterwards.  some may question the strength of the MLB test if they were the ones who gave freeman's initial negative...

d.price (LAD) to sit out the season.

LAD isn't going to get d.price at all in 2020 and they got m.betts for 60-ish games until he's a FA.  ow.  that duo cost them jeter downs, alex verdugo, and connor wong.

the cleveland indians have released a statement that they are open for dialogue about the future of the team's name.

twitter is all over it and seems to be all about going back to "cleveland spiders", an unrelated dead MLB team lineage in cleveland from the 1800s (some guy named cy young played for them).

Q coming back in 4-6 weeks will be like a mid-season trade!  sigh...

but yeah, they should be good in-house with expanded rosters unless they get slammed by IL stuff.

With 17 pitchers likely on the 30-man MLB Active List roster for the first two weeks and then probably 15 pitchers on the 28-man Active List for the next two weeks after that, the Cubs should be able to "bullpen" games quite a bit for the first month. They won't really need five starters.
