Brady & Maitan Lift Angels over Cubs at Diablo

RHSP Denny Brady (LAA 7th round draft pick - Mercer County CC) fired four innings of one-hit shutout ball with five strikeouts and Kevin Maitan (2016 IFA - Venezuela - $6.45M combined signing bonuses between ATL and LAA) belted a solo HR, helping the Angels defeat the Cubs 3-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Field #3 at the Diablo Stadium Complex in Tempe, AZ.

Christopher Morel drilled an RBI single and a double for the Cubs.

The game was extended an extra half-inning so that all of the Angels pitchers who were scheduled to throw could get their work.

Cubs 2017 6th round draft pick RHP Jeremiah Estrada (Palm Desert HS - Palm Desert, CA) got the start for the Cubs and continued to struggle with command (bouncing pitches in front of home plate and nearly hitting batters), throwing just 51% strikes and walking four in three innings of work. Then he left the game with a right elbow issue while warming up for the bottom of the 4th.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):
CUBS LINEUP:
1. Orian Nunez, 3B: 1-4 (F-7, 4-3, 2B, 1-3, R)

For anyone who might be interested, the youngest player in the Cubs organization right now is 16-year old Mexican 2B Reivaj Garcia, who will not turn 17 until August. And since he is still at Extended Spring Training (and playing very well I might add), it looks like he will go directly to AZL (skipping DSL). A 16-year old in the AZL? Wow.

Recently signed Venezuelan catcher Pablo Aliendo is the second-youngest player in the Cubs organization (he just turned 17 last Tuesday), but he is presently on the Resricted List (apprarently due to visa issues).

17-year old Mexican SS Luis Verdugo is also still at Extended Spring Training (and playing well) and so he will also very likely skip DSL and (like Garcia) go directly to the AZL. (Verdugo turned 17 last October)

BTW, I have mentioned this before, but Reivaj is "Javier" spelled backwards (kind of like "Nomar" is "Ramon" spelled backwards).

The DSL results are flying much more "real time" this year. Many thanks to those responsible.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
