El bate de beisbol de Verdugo habla verdad al Parque de Riverview

Luis Verdugo belted two triples, scored twice, and collected an RBI, Richard Nunez drilled an RBI double and walked twice, and Erling Moreno, Riger Fernandez, and Chi-Feng Lee combined (albeit pitching for opposite squads) to hurl 6.2 IP of two-hit shutout ball, in a six-inning AZL Cubs mini-camp intrasquad game played Thursday night on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Luis Verdugo is clearly the best prospect left behind in Mesa after the Eugene Emeralds departed town on Tuesday. One of the reasons he was left behind is that Luis Vazquez needs to play SS most every day at Eugene and on days he doesn't Christopher Morel will play there, but the main reason is that Verdugo is only 17 years old and is making his pro debut (although he did attend AZ Instructs as a 16-year old post-2017 and Minor League Camp and Extended Spring Training this season).

The four recently-signed position player draft picks (Artis, Galazin, Wharton, and Daniel) participated in pre-game baserunning drills, fielding practice, and BP, but did not play in the game, while the five pitchers who signed this week (Richan, McCauley, Vega, Whitney, and Patterson) are throwing bullpen side-sessions as a first step toward getting themselves "game ready" for the start of AZL play next week.

In AZL mini-camp roster news, CF D. J. Wilson has completed his rehab and has rejoined Myrtle Beach.

Muy bien and gracias AZ PHIL: I am wondering, do the Cubs currently have one pitching prospect in the entire system that throws at 99 or better?

dillon maples works 99mph+ occasionally, but generally works a touch lower. dylan cease (now with the wsox) hit 99+ with a bit more regularity. if maples can figure out his command/control and reign in those walks he could be deadly with a 96-99mph fastball and a slider that has an unreal break on it. total closer material if he gets that shaped up.

E-MAN: The hardest thrower I saw at Spring Training this past March was Justin Hancock (who was touching 98-99 in MLB Cactus League games but wasn't there consistently), but I don't know what kind of FB velocity he has right now at Iowa. But he's 27 years old so he may have maxed-out his velo.

Hancock was acquired from SD in the Matt Szczur deal and he was eligible to be a minor league 6YFA post-2017 but agreed to sign a successor contract and then went undrafted in the December 2017 Rule 5 Draft despite being eligible for selection.

Dillon Maples sits at 95-97 and (like Hancock) touches 98+ occasionally.

21-year old Erling Moreno's FB has been sitting at 96-98 at EXST but he hasn't touched 99 (yet). E. Moreno was left behind at EXST to work on his mechanics, and while he looked like he had maybe turned a corner, he had a relapse (poor outing) last night, walking four in 2.2 IP (with no strikeouts) and throwing only 46% strikes.

Among the U21 pitchers I have personally seen this year, Eury Ramos (age 20) was sitting 94-95 T 96-97, Danis Correa (age 18) was at 92-94 T-95-96 but then was shut-down a few weeks ago (also he is only 5'11 so there may be some limit to his velo), and both Yovanny Cruz (age 18) and Eduarniel Nunez (turned 19 last week) were hitting 95 fairly regularly by the end of EXST, but they don't throw 99.

The "wild card" may be 22-year old 6'8 Stephen Ridings. who ramped his FB up to 95-96 in some of his outings at EXST, and with his size and relatively young age he could add some MPH to his FB eventually. Ridings struggled a bit with command and consistency at EXST but was assigned to Eugene anyway, and since he was not stretched-out beyond one inning at EXST, he will likely work as a late-inning reliever going forward (at least in the immediate future) where his velocity would play-up.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
