Cubs @ Dodgers: Underwood vs Maeda (Game 76)

CHC (42-33): RHP Duane Underwood, Jr. (0-0, —)
LAD (41-35): RHP Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.84)
First pitch: 9:00pmCST

Underwood, a 23y/o North Carolinian, makes his first big league start. He was the Cubs’ second second-round pick in the 2012 draft. This year at AAA-Iowa, he was 3-7 with a 4.27.

Maeda’s last time out was a no-decision on Tuesday at Wrigley (3.2 IP, 3 ER). Overall, the Cubs are 5-16 (.313) against him. Rizzo, Russell, and Schwarber are all 1-1.

These next three games are all on ESPN. Uck.

It’s Lester (thankfully) and Stripling tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

ICYMI #Cubs optioned Farrell to Iowa. Mazzoni and Hancock added. Zastryzny to DL

yanks have 7 of 9 regulars with 10+ HRs...and none of them are their regular 1st or LF'r.

124 team homers in 75 games.  damn.

Really hoping Underwood replaces Hancock on the roster and then tomorrow Underwood is optioned for Maples. Maples has been pitching very well in Iowa and deserves to be called up.

chitownmvp01: I would presume that the Cubs will place Tyler Chatwood on the Paternity Leave List prior to tonight's game and Duane Underwood Jr would then replace Chatwood on the 25-man roster. Since a player can remain on the Paternity List for only a maximum of three days, Chatwood would presumably be reinstated on Thursday.

Also, because his DL stint was backdated, Brandon Morrow is eligible to reinstated on Wednesday, and the Cubs might choose to replace Underwood on the 25 with Morrow (if he is ready to pitch) on Wednesday, and then Hancock or Mazzoni would be replaced on the 25 by Chatwood on Thursday.

BTW, when I first saw that Luke Farrell has been Designated for Assignment (and before mlb.com changed it), my first thought was that the Cubs might be calling up LHRP Kyle Ryan, who (unlike Anthony Bass) does have a minor league option left and who therefore could be sent back & forth to Iowa this season as many times as the Cubs wish. But then Ryan ended up starting the game for Iowa yesterday. But I still wouldn't be too surprised if Ryan gets called up by the Cubs sooner rather than later, especially with the way that Duensing has been throwing lately and with Ryan being stretched-out to throw multiple innings.

Shae Simmons has the right to elect free-agency after being sent outright to the minors because he has accrued at least three years of MLB Service Time. (He is an Article XX-D player). He can elect free-agency immediately upon being outrighted (he actually has two days to decide), or he can defer his decision until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season (he can elect free-agency beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up through October 15th).

If he elects free-agency immediately his contract is terminated and he receives no termination pay. If he defers free-agency until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season his contract remains in force through the conclusion of the MLB regular season, but then if he is added back to an MLB 40-man roster prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season, he cannot elect to be a free-agent.

Almora CF, Heyward RF, Zobrist 2B, Rizzo 1B, Baez SS, Schwarber LF, Happ 3B, Gimenez C, Underwood P

bryant might be available off the bench

darvish (pitching for south bend) goes 5ip 3h 0bb 5k, 1r/er

looks like he'll be back up for his next start.

Not going to try to Game Recap a 10:10 pm E. start, but if anyone wants to talk about it in Parachat, I'll be up late...

underwood done after 4ip and 77 pitches...could have probably gone another inning

4ip  2h 3bb 3k, 1r/er

he gave up 1h and 2bb in the 1st and recovered nicely for innings 2-4.

Definition of a losing streak:  Score 6 Sunday and lose.  Give up 2 Monday and lose.  Ugh.

KB hasn't been right for a while -- lots of one-handed swings -- I wonder how long the shoulder has bothered him, and how bad it is. Time to grind out a few Ws, gentlemen. Gut check time.

I don't really get why Chris Gimenez and his .115 BA (career .216 BA) are on the team.  When Ross was lousy at the plate in 2015, at least his defense and leadership were worth something.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
