Something to keep in mind ref the Chris Gimenez DFA is that because he is an Article XIX-A player (he has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time in his career) he does not have choose between accepting an outright assignment to the minors or receiving the balance of his 2018 salary ($1.275M). He can merely refuse to consent to an outright assignment and then force the Cubs to either trade him (if they can find a taker) or release him (and those would be the only two choices).

If he is traded the Cubs are off the hook for his remaining salary (unless the deal involves a salary offset), and if he is released the Cubs are responsible for 100% of his remaining salary minus the pro-rated salary he receives if he signs with another club after being released.

So there is no financial incentive for Gimenez to accept a minor league assignment. That doesn't mean he positively won't accept an assignment to Iowa, just that he has more leverage than an Article XX-D player (like Shae Simmons) who must choose between accepting an outright assignment to the minors and defer free-agency until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season or becoming a free-agent immediately at the cost of sacrificing the balance of his remaining salary.

Gimenez gets 100% of his remaining salary whether he is traded, accepts or refuses a minor league assignment, or gets released.

Well maybe but...if Redbirds pick up Gimenez, and dfa Fowler...I’m just sayin’.

or does Gimenez dfa  mean Yu will be a no show for 2018?

or is the new Maddonism: Yu Go, We go?

Tommy Birch...when he tweets...pay attention! Where there is smoke... Smokey: only Yu can prevent forest fires?

i once saw tommy birch safely drag 10 children out of a burning orphanage and find them new parents while tweeting a story about taylor davis's hair. the mayor gave him high-5s and various women swooned. a new variety of sweet corn was named after him and it became an international best seller. that is one quality human being right there.

Orioles and Royals both on pace to win less than 50 games, more than halfway through the season.

Wow.

Almora CF, Zobrist RF, Baez 2B, Russell SS, Contreras C, Happ LF, Bote 3B, Caratini 1B, Quintana P

If I'm a Razorbacks fan, seeing Zobrist catch that pop up in foul territory with Baez and Caratini converging - I'd be sick. One botched play from winning the CWS.

Probably a question for our main man AZ Phil -- I'm confused about how the DL works.  Bryant was on the 10-day DL, which expired Tuesday.  I don't think he was activated yesterday or today, and Bote is still up (good thing!), but they expect him to hopefully be ready Friday.  So, what is his current status?  Clearly they didn't start a fresh 10 days on Tuesday. Can they just shift the start date of the prior 10-day DL, so that it expires Friday?   Thanks.

BILLYBUCKS: A player must remain on the 10-day DL for at least ten days (and the assignment can be backdated up to three days if the player did not appear in a game during that period of time), but there is no limit on how long a player can remain on the 10-day DL during the MLB regular season beyond the required minimum ten days. NOTE: All players on the 10-day DL must be reinstated no later than the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season.

And time spent on the 10-day DL prior to being transferred to the 60-day DL is applied to the minimum number of days a player must spend on the 60-day DL before being eligible to be reinstated, so (for example) Eddie Butler is eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day DL right now because he spent 52 days on the 10-day DL prior to being transferred to the 60-day DL on June 11th. (Butler was actually eligible to be reinstated frrom the 60-day DL as far back as June 19th).

stealing home?

stealing home.

baez earned that one more than a few ways...though it was kinda stupid to do with 0 outs.

willlllllllson!

been a nice game today (so far).

Another unintentional walk for Almora. I think he digs that lead off spot.

Oh, and a hell of a throw to Willson to nail down the first out (and tying run) in the top of the 7th.

Voted for Zobrist and JHey for the All Star game. Over-reach perhaps but where would the Cubs be if they were playing at their 2017 level of production?

The Brewers have not had an extended losing streak all year. According to Fangraphs, the Cubs should have 4 more wins, while the Brewers are about 2 wins over their skis. I am hoping this evens out and Ryan Braun gets busted again. It is astounding that nearly every Cubs win is accompanied by a Brewer win as well.

Another rough outing for CJ -- 20 pitches, only 7 strikes. A four-pitch walk, HBP and single.  Ugh.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it

wow.  what a blown call.  go cubs, i guess.

neris is good for 70-ish appearances and having him throw 89-91mph fastballs was something i was not looking forward to for 70-ish games.

his splitter today was ranging 82-83mph...also a bit faster than spring performances.
