Cardinals @ Cubs: Flaherty vs Lester (Game 95)

STL (48-47): RHP Jack Flaherty (3-4, 3.24)
CHC (56-38): LHP Jon Lester (12-2, 2.58)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lester gave up 3 ER in 5.1 innings and won in San Diego on Sunday. In his three starts against the Cards this season, he’s 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Keep it up, Jon. Overall, they are 50-208 (.240) against him. Gyorko is 9-24 with 3 HR.

Flaherty had a no-decision against the Reds his last time out (5 IP, 0 ER). He had the same performance and outcome against the Cubs on June 17. The Cubs are 2-19 (.105) against him. Almora and Bryant have the hits.

Montgomery and Weaver go at 12:05pmCST tomorrow, then Chatwood and Gant on Fox at 6:15pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Thanks for keeping it goin' CT Steve.

I am kinda intrigued with the re-boot of Casey Coleman, another Jim Hendry pick. Maybe Hayden Simpson can be resurrected from his gig at a WalMart somewhere?

No we need to go find Ben Christiansen, he may be the only guy worse than Chatwood at throwing strikes.  At least Chatwood hasn't hit anybody in the on deck circle intentionally.

How are the Cubs going to make room for everyone in their bullpen when Chavez is activated, especially when Morrow comes back? Norwood should be going down first, but Rosario doesn't deserve to be sent down. Could a DFA be coming for Duensing?

Butler probably gets traded or DFA'd when his rehab assignment expires. There's just no room for him anymore.

Rizzo 1B, Bryant 3B, Heyward RF, Baez 2B, Contreras C, Schwarber LF, Almora CF, Russell SS, Lester P

chavez due to join the team tomorrow.

not lester's day...

need some of that bat magic from last night...

Only sixth inning and Carpenter 5-5 with 3 HRs 2 doubles and 7 RBI

Deunsing ERA now 7.31 - I smell a DL stint coming again soon

And TLS throws one pitch to get out of the inning

Carpenter now removed from the game, probably for fear of developing "home run derby" fatigue

Cubs even managed to F up the seventh inning stretch - invited guest singer fail (all I heard on the radio was the organ). Damn get it all out of your system today boyz

So La Stella, Caratini, and Happ are all auditioning for bullpen jobs today, interesting.  If only David Ross was still around.

Interesting note on newly acquired Jesse Chavez he was once drafted by the Cubs in the 39th round in 2001, but didn't sign.  Another Hendry pick returns to the Cubs.

Per Jesse Rogers

Cubs lefty Drew Smyly (Tommy John) will throw a simulated game on Sunday then probably one more next week before heading out to the minors on a rehab assignment. He's expected to join the bullpen in August but the Cubs haven't ruled out a start for him if its needed as he's able.

Curious why Strop wasn't pulled after the walk to Molina. I know Joe was tossed earlier in the game but wonder if he's still ultimately pulling the strings.

Edit: didn't matter which reliever they put in - they all sucked tonight. Oh well, get 'em tomorrow

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
